What is Fast Fourier Transform and why do I care about it?
If there is unwanted frequency content in your design, it could interfere with other components, cause excess noise, or even voltage spikes that can cause your device to malfunction. If you don’t analyze the frequency components of your signal, you will never know that unwanted content is there. You can easily do this on an oscilloscope using Fast Fourier Transform, or “FFT”.
Typically, people don’t associate an oscilloscope with frequency analysis, but it is the perfect tool for analyzing the frequency content of your digital signals.
An FFT is just a math operation on the oscilloscope. This math operation basically splits apart the signal that you see in the time domain, then translates that into the frequency domain. This is shown on a graph in amplitude vs. frequency.
Often times, there are problems that you can’t even see in the time domain, so having the ability to view the frequency domain can reveal errors and glitches in your device you didn’t even know were there. Having this capability on an oscilloscope just makes this analysis even more convenient.
You will learn how to set up an FFT on an oscilloscope in order to verify your design and understand what it is that is causing any errors.
Tune in for future Scopes University episodes covering more oscilloscope capabilities to see how you can test more efficiently!

The digital storage oscilloscope we used:
www.keysight.co...
(The Keysight InfiniiVision 4000 X-Series Oscilloscope)
The 4000 X-Series oscilloscopes offers a large 12.1 inch capacitive touch screen, a user interface designed for touch, and the exclusive Zone touch trigger, all combined with an industry-leading uncompromised update rate of 1 million wfm/s to help you see all of your signal detail. Plus, advanced analysis capabilities help you solve your hardest challenges quickly.
If you are looking for a lower cost oscilloscope that still has the segmented memory capability:
www.keysight.co...
(The Keysight InfiniiVision 1000 X-Series Oscilloscope)
This is an awesome cheap oscilloscope for beginners. Even though it has an ultra-low price, it has the quality of an industry level oscilloscope. It has a built-in digital multimeter, function generator (WaveGen), built-in training signals to learn quickly, and more!
Scopes University is hosted by Erin East and Melissa Spencer. The video series covers when and how to use different applications and capabilities of the InfiniiVision and Infiniium oscilloscopes. You’ll gain familiarity with features that will help you save time in your measurement, further your analysis, and deepen your insight.

Finally, an explanation that's easy to understand. Why couldn't anyone just say FFTs show the compostion of the wave form?

Brandon Ruiz Vasquez Get that chimney cleaned. I ain't bringing a Keysight down just to get it covered in soot. Would void the warranty. Leave out a large bottle of whiskey.

thnks you i was consder that the FFT woud be a fact of a consider of a signal would be in the future translate from a time to a frequentie and theeout to a frequentie answer, but listen to your class i understand now i can work with FFT and MAth or wave analyses..:)

Hi Can you please tell me which is the minimum 4-channel model to support FFT analysis with the ability to display FFT based measurements, such as THD and AC fundamental RMS ? Can the basic DSO-X1024 do all that? Thanks

My scope only has Edge, Pulse Width, Rise/Fall Time and Runt detection. What problem is, it shows the search event number (such as found 1 edge), but I have no side "search" panel with search results listed. That's a pity.
