Get Real time 8k playback with the M1 Max Macbook Pro. Render times are good too, but that's just an excuse to go for a walk. In this video I quickly unbox the 14inch M1 MAX Macbook Pro and give you my first impressions on how it handles the toughest video formats. Might be time to replace my main editing system.

    @@MarkHoltze thanks for letting me know, I really enjoy your vintage lens videos and thought, brilliant when I saw you were reviewing this. I am still grumpy about my maxed out 2019 16 inch MBP which will eat its battery in 2 and a half hours photo editing in Photoshop… nuts… but I’m over it (maybe). So my thinking was it’s the only duff Mac I’ve ever had so my only question was whether to go 14 inch or 16 inch… IF the battery life and speed is OK on these things doing real work, oh and if the new M1 Max machines don’t run incredibly hot like my old i9 machine. Anyway, on the vintage lens front, I’ve recently been enjoying the Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50mm f1.8… remarkable lens, sharp wide open, amazing colours and it has a manageable and interesting bokeh swirl… such an interesting lens. Keep up the great work. Marcus

    @@marcusoutdoors4999 Ya these computers definitely accelerated the devaluation on our current gear no doubt. Totally different tech on these, think about the space between all the components and the time needed to send signal, calculate and send back. It's small relatively speaking but those add up, that's all gone with these. Everything is contained with way less back and forth and the heat the back and forth creates. 16 for me is too big for a laptop, but that's just preference. The price delta isn't huge and you do get more battery with the 16. I just like a smaller footprint when I'm and about lugging gear around.

    @@MarkHoltze yes, I am torn on the screen size which I was super interested in your maxed out spec 14! I have to admit I am 100% sat on the fence weirdly because both sizes look great and the price is fine if it performs. Looking forward to your up coming reviews on both the MacBook and of course the real deal, the lenses. I was recently at an event called the Goodwood Revival in the UK where they race classic cars built before 1966! The especially good bit is that everyone is in period dress including the 7000 volunteers. So I shot all day using an adapted Voigtlander Norton 75mm f1.5 for that vintage look. Very pleased with the result, hence my interest in the magic vintage or character lenses bring. Anyway I’ve gone all fan boy! As I said keep up the great work it is much appreciated.

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    2 жыл бұрын

    Honestly i've never had a good editing experience on a laptop...until now. It's 100% because of the new chip set, I mean take away even the smallest distance between chips, info sent to GPU, GPU does it's thing and sends it back. That travel over time as small as it is is gone pretty much now. All that compufriction creates heat and heat needs to be cooled.....man it's a cycle. The timeline was always snappy, you really can't see it in the video either but that refresh rate on the monitor makes the illusion of motion even more smooth. I really just need an external monitor now that can match it, I still don't love the confined sub 27inch hehehe. It's just nuts what the small form factor has done to the Mac Pro's...which I guess were really a few years too late and just cost way too much for what you get. I was cutting off the rAID as well which actually gives the laptop power which I had no idea. One less plug to have it when tied to that thing.

I've been editing on iMac's at various computer companies and they all got 64gb or more but never reached that ceilling. Would you mind checking the ram usage while you're editing that project, while cutting + coloring? Thanks and good work.

    my iMac had 32, I recently upgraded it to 64 because I was getting running out of memory. Granted I was working on long format projects and often had multiple programs open but that's how i like to work, so for me 64 is the best option and should be a bit more future proof. It really depends on what you're cutting on and with. AVID for example (won't work on this currently) but it's a much more efficient program to run than say Premiere. It's SO VERY specific to your workflow as well, i'm cutting big network/streaming services documentaries so power is essential. Shorter form stuff probably not needed as much.

  • @Killertuga2

    @Killertuga2

    Thanks for the answer Mark. In my case I don’t think I will need the 64gb. I don’t do heavy grading on Resolve. Mostly that’s handled to the colorist. I just cut. No 3d or animation. Might do some color but nothing a pro colorist could do. As far as multitasking, usually I have PP or FCP, photoshop or illustrator and chrome open. But since this unified memory works better than the previous “RAM” I don’t think I need that much of power. Best regards!

    can you please compare the footage of red komodo vs s1h? or just tell me why upgrade from s1H to komodo since s1h can record "prores raw". did you notice a difference like how they handle overexposure and underexposure or motion cadence ? what do you think is the difference ? i can't find footage comparisons between the two cameras . thanks

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    2 жыл бұрын

    Might be a decent idea, tough to showcase on KZread I think with compression but I'll think of some way that might be a viable experiment. ProRes RAW is great, but it's not "true raw", not that it really matters in some cases but it does on the meta front with some productions. Both images are very nice, S1H biggest flaw really is it's rolling shutter when shooting more kinetic action, but I use both cameras often and they cut together so nice, the colour on the S1H is just so easy to work with I can match just about anything with it. Global Shutter on the Komodo plus S35 RF mount vs L FF. I find the Komodo is a much higher maintenance camera that really demands the most from you. I feel you can cheat a bit more with the S1H, it's just a much easier camera to use from an operator standpoint. I simply cannot break the R3D image though if I'm exposed properly, highlight roll off is also very different, but you really need a fine resolution uncompressed source (KZread) to really appreciate it.

    I played with Premiere in this case because it looks like Resolve is already pretty heavily optimized for the ARM division of Apple computers. It would be curious to see where the performance boost lies. The Mini is probably the best bang for buck, I was kind of hoping they had a Mini "pro" or new Mini option with this release. it's easier to replace my 13 inch MBP from 2013 with the 14 2021 model though lol.

  • @MarkHoltze

    Night and day different. Resolve is highly optimized so it works well on a variety of machines until you start to do some of the more advanced features. The way these new chips handle cycles just make it really hard for other hardware to compare. I love my iMac but this thing is dusting it in just about everything mins that 27 inch display.

    I haven’t played with many other systems but it seems to some degree even the M1’s saw a major increase in performance. I tend to hold onto computers quite a while so I opt to get the best bang for buck. I’ve seen some great performances from base spec M1 pros. My work might be a bit different than some of those KZreadrs which is why I opted for slightly higher spec. Given some of the camera systems I’m Working with.
