Oh Thank You! I just did my initial sketch of a lion onto pastel mat-and was toying with the idea of doing coloured pencil instead of pastel (I have also been working a lot with pastel)-this video helped me to decide! I am gonna "go for it" and try the light layer of pans first, and then my trusty Polychrommos pencils! Thanks for this video, Jason!

Thank you for an excellent video! I have wanted to try this technique for a large project (I think it would speed up the process). I don't have any pan pastels yet, but I am very familiar with using pastel sticks and loved them for portraits, animals, and fantasy art. I was also thinking of exploring the method of using watercolor or inks as a base for color pencil, as I've come across a few YT artists who have done that. (I don't mean only using color pencil to add detail to a watercolor painting, I mean only using watercolor or inks as a base for the color pencil the way you used the pan pastel).

Art supplies usually have pros and cons. I find he downside of pastels vs. colored pencils is that they're messy and less precise, even in pencil form., and they're much more prone to moving, which you may not want. I like both a lot, but the advantage of the colored pencils is in their precision. The downside is that they're slow.

A base layer of water colour pencil works pretty well too

Glad to hear that, I wanted to try the water color pencils to lay in my base layer and go over it with the pastel pencils. I'm thinking on the Pastelmat it will work.

Does pastelmat really help in doing light over dark?

Do you use any fixative spray after the pastel before the color pencils
