Fashion Historian Fact Checks The Great Gatsby's Wardrobe | Glamour

Ойын-сауық

Fashion historian Raissa Bretaña fact checks the historical accuracy of the costumes worn by Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan in the Baz Luhrmann movie, "The Great Gatsby." Raissa analyzes Gatsby's famous pink suit alongside Daisy's crystal drop party dress, breaking them down, layer-by-layer.

It may just be too obvious for Raissa to bother to mention it, but I think Daisy's bracelet connected to the ring is supposed to symbolize how she feels shackled to her husband. Even if that ring isn't supposed to be her marriage ring

Yes! Just like the $350 THOUSAND dollars worth of pearls (in 1920s money, I looked it up, today it would cost over $5 million) he gave her for their wedding--that she destroyed because once she knew Gatsby was still alive, they became a burden. Also, these bracelets highlight the fact that she's not wearing her wedding ring. Yet she's showing up to an event with her husband. It speaks volumes about how miserable she is with Tom.

I’d say if people want to see a more historically accurate version to check out the 1974 adaptation. I’m okay with the modernisation of the outfits, but generally just not a fan of a lot of the designs of the women’s costumes. I do appreciate how they captured the spirit of the ‘20’s, and little Easter eggs like the Arrow Collar Man.

Maybe it is not the most accurate, but it is the one of the best adaptations imo, it makes you feel the story and the exaggeration of the characters’ lives, same for the music, that is more “modernised” that actual jazz music. There aren’t many good adaptations out there, but this was definitely a good one.

Id like to point out a slight error, the word four-in-hand doesnt mean the necktie as a whole, but just refers to the type of knot that is used on a necktie. The modern necktie that is used both today and back in the 20s is called a “Langsdorf” tie and can be knotted in many different ways, where four-in-hand is one of the methods.

You are right the suit looks too modern for the 1920s, although the film's intention was not to make an exact period piece given the other modernized updates. Unfortunately Brooks Brothers no longer makes jackets like those worn in the 1920s so it wasn't exactly the best costumer (though I'm sure it was a hit for Brooks as an ad campaign). Their modern jackets in the film are very stiff looking compared to the relaxed jackets of the 1920s. Look at the shoulders and armholes in the film. No leisure jacket had that much stiffness or padding the in 1920s given these were sporting outfits that folks wore to relax.

She failed to mention the British striped ties were , and are, usually called Regimental Ties as the different colors and pattern separation would show which military unit a man served in. In the US, they were/are called College Ties as some elite universities have a particular tie stripe or pattern.

Hollywood and costume stores have really glamorized the 20s by changing the entire silhouette and making it seem like everyone wore fringe and dark lipstick like they were movie stars lol. Personally I’d take 30s fashion over 20s anyday- much more attractive and modern. Also I’d wish they had shown Jordan in pants!!!

Lots of Ruffles and modern Couture! Nothing to do with Summer 1922, basically, and it's okay by me? Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada clearly wanted to create a mood of crazed debauchery, and they succeeded! On the subject of Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan: I felt she was miscast. I had no Idea why Jay was so fixated on this girl, she was a total drip! Maybe that was the point? IDK!
