Petersfehn retention basin
The flood retention basin is located 8.5 km above the mouth of the Haaren at the confluence of the Haaren and the Putthaaren.
With a maximum water level of NN + 6.50 m, around 650,000 m³ can be stored on a flooded area of ​​70 hectares in this valley. The backwater level is generally limited by the natural slopes. In the east, a dam with a crown height of NN + 7.50 m has been built across the Haarental, and in the south a dam at NN + 7.00 m has been partially built to protect against the “Woldlinie” road.
The crest of the main dam is paved to a width of 3.00 m for maintenance work and repairs. Public transport is not permitted on this route.
The annual summer flood of the Haaren has a peak runoff of around 70 l/s · km². A peak discharge of 127 l/s · km² must be expected every 10 years.
With a water level of NN + 5.00 m, the basin holds 165,000 m³ with 17 hectares of flooded area. With a storage height of NN + 6.00 m, the pool volume increases to 360,000 m³ with a flooded area of ​​45 hectares, and with the maximum dam height of NN + 6.50 m, 70 ha will be flooded with a pool volume of 650,000 m³.
The entire system and the weir construction are designed in such a way that a maximum storage target of NN + 6.75 m could be achieved with a pool capacity of around 850,000 m³.

In addition to its main task as a flood retention basin, the Petersfehner Basin also offers space for nature and local recreation.
Nature: Due to the extensive grazing and mowing of the riparian areas, species-rich meadows and habitats for many plants and animals have developed.
Local recreation: The area is accessible through a network of hiking and cycling trails and invites you to take part in a variety of leisure activities. Piers allow boat trips on the Haaren.
