Farming with Horses: Planting Corn Field

Today @Working Horses With Jim, we are planting the corn field with the horses! We are farming using a horse drawn corn planter.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Jim, I wouldn’t worry about the crooked rows. Any farmer worth his salt will tell you that you plant more corn in a crooked row than you can in a straight one. That’s a fact! Cheers! Whipple

My Grandpa would always have a wire and do a check-row type of planting and cultivating. He was completely against a tractor planting his corn crop. My dad was against the horses. And now I lean more towards the horses. Funny how that works!

Happy Anniversary to you and your wife Jim! The Gordon girls did a great job feeding and watering the horses while you were gone. Nice pictures from your wedding day. Boy, oh boy, have things changed since those days. My wife and I celebrate 34 years in October. We laugh all the time at what simple kids we were way back then. LOL Had to edit this. My wife corrected me. It’s 33 years! Hahahahaha Cheers! Whipple

There’s a first for me. Never watched anyone plant around the field. I am very sure the corn 🌽 doesn’t care how you plant. It just needs to be deep enough and the right population. I have planted lots of days with a 290 planter as a young farmer. It does get the job done. Hope you get a very good yield so you can upgrade the planter. All you need is the right amount of rain ☔️ and heat. A little prayer don’t hurt either. Thanks.

He planted that way bc he’s using a few different varieties this year from leftover bags. He will harvest it with a new idea picker one row at a time. Planting this way will ensure that he is harvesting the same variety on each side of the field.

The sounds are lovely! You could make a soundtrack of the sounds of your life and sell it as a relaxation aid 😆 I'm talking about the long interlude without voice - just the humming insects, ringing metal, and that peculiar sound of leather harness (even if it's not real leather), and of course the horses' soft footsteps in the field. So relaxing after a day with energetic Kindergartners, First and Second Graders 💖 I love the kids, but at the end of the day the quiet is precious.

I always get a bit of a chuckle watching your videos. For me it is my raised rows that are never straight, so embarrassing to see them look curved or occasionally snake like. The cultivator still works ok though but I do have to really use the peddles to stay on track. I imagine that you are way better steering your cultivator so all will be fine. Looks like you are using a bus seat on your forecart without the back. Mine still have the back on it. I run my cord from my disk and hook it onto my front safety rail similar to what you did attaching yours to the seat. Hope you get some rain before the next batch of heat sets in. Thanks for making the videos it helps me think I am not the only crazy one doing this.

whipple 1 said it right on crooked rows. you plant more lol. hey I've worked on potato farms and was told by the boss whom run the planter mind you...... crooked rows are up to the cultivators job to straighten without killing the plant.... and with a slap on my shoulder then knew that was my job cultivating. i hated it cause i might straighten the rows a bit but the potatoes still grew were they were. now as i know you like older equipment yet stay with horses and said you might upgrade.... I'm not sure how much weight difference it might be to set up for horses but I've seen taking a row setup off and more modern corn planter that's like 20 rows and taking just one row section or two and mounting to a toolbar on a compact tractor. were you already use a fore cart I'm not sure if that might be of any use for you. they are still ground driven. im thinking if a 1025 john deere 25hp tractor can pull a one row no problem...... depending how you set up to hook to your fore cart you should be able to pull 2 rows fairly decently....... or.... one row faster at worst case. I just dont know what the drag would be. also youd have to set up a toolbar type hitch to pull them but im thinking it should work ok set up. and easyier to find parts ext as bigger farmers still use the same planters. i seen that setup on tractor time with time channel. if you want youtube search tractor time with tim corn planter or let me know and ill find the video if you like. the outfit tim bought his reconfigured planter for his compact tractor takes the better parts off large wore out tobig farmer planters and reconditions for small home owners ext.

My guess is your rows are going to be straighter than you think. If not, no worries.

Hi Jim and Brenda another great video great to watch the horses and the old style implements. Do you use the oats and grass for hay or strip graze it? I f you really want some rain I can send you some we have flooding in the south island farmers have had to move stock to higher ground and winter feed has been washed away as well as fences so just stay safe. p.s.its taken me 3 attempts to right this I am house sitting for some friends and their kitten decided he can type better and keeps walking over the key board

How many acres did you plant? The clover looks excellent! Buck and Ken (hey I'm partial) did a great job.

Neat and inexpensive. Of course, if you planted with a 30 row planter as they are customary in our region, you could do 'precision planting', but most of the money you make with this crop would go into paying for your equipment. What kind of seeds do you use, open pollinated , I suppose? The weather in your area obviously is not as wet as it has been here over the last two weeks. I have not been able to get into the field in all that rime, it just is too wet, and we have rain every few days. My horses are waiting , too.

No, I don't use open pollinated corn, I used a couple different varieties. We could use some rain right now. Hope all is well in your area

I have a question when you go organic can’t you still fertilize with manure? I would think that would be very organic. But I know absolutely nothing just thinking of Squanto and the fish lol ans if you could put in your own organic fertilizer.
