farming in strange times

These are strange times to be a small farmer. The "Great Pause" has affected our markets, the way we sell our products, our KZread channel, and even the availability and delivery schedule for broiler chicks. Join me as I give an update on how direct-to-consumer small farms have been affected, and speculate on what the future may hold.

    I started a low carb diet during our lockup and have lost nearly 19 pounds from 250 pounds in 8 weeks. Its for my arteries, my longevity and my energy levels. I sleep like the dead now. You sell pork, eggs, bacon, beef and chicken. All things I like and all things on this Keto/low carb diet. You may wish to market your products as "keto friendly" or "low carb" and this may remind some customers that either they should try keto or their family members that are already doing low carb might benefit. This may be an avenue of increased sales, or even a niche supply of delicious protein and fat. By the way I cook almost everything in lard and butter now :) This might be worth more research.

    We used to go to farmers markets once a week when we were home; but stopped because the trinket sales, packaged food, meals, and wine sellers became the dominate sellers. For 13 winters we used to go to a small town in Mexico. The only pace to get "Real food" was the Sunday farmers marked we got meat and vegetables. The area was not rich and there were no big grocery stores. The last 3 years (Tourist discovered the place) we were there, two big box grocery stores arrive and it killed the market as you say they sell for less. We have bought whole beef and buffalo from small slaughter houses when we had children and were at home that processed animals like yours. It was superior to grocery stores. Most have closed. We now winter in Panama and they still have "Real farmers markets; but only for produce". In Mexico and Panama cash is the only way to pay except in the big box stores. There will always be a place for small operation. It is amazing you can operated on an under 50 acre farm.

    I have to say, very entertaining. I grew up on a farm, patatoes as far as the eye could see. We had pigs, adjisted beef and we had a heap of free range chickens for eggs and meat plus a big vege garden. I left the farm as soon as I could growing up and made my way in the world. I have been stuck in the Indian lockdown since March, I am an Australian. Anyway watching your videos and another site 'milllennial farmer (I think) it has changed my thinking. I will certainly scratch the potatoes as it is rediculous hard work for very little. I like your mix and approach but not sure I could make it on a few acres, you amaze me how you have made ends meet. Thanks for sharing and giving a very good insight into farm life. Plus I love your Dexter cattle, never heard of them before. We had Hereford. Good luck and stay safe.

    I think you're smart to draw a line in the sand as to how and where you sell. Ever think of growing the on farm store? A visited a "Pick Your Own Orchard" in Vermont and in the store they sold jams and maple syrup from other small farmers. The most impressive part was they bought "bake ready pies", baked them and sold them for a nice profit. I thought it was kind of funny that they didn't have their apples in the pies they sold. Went for the quickest profit. Keep your chin up.

    Thanks GWC 3! I have thought about putting some work into our store, especially these days. It was always convenient to sell at the farmers markets, where the business is condensed into a shorter time period, but now we are reconsidering. Adding other farm products would definitely help attract people.

    If you know your tourist trade won't be there this year I would set up a second CSA. Start it after the first one but with less discount. Customer get a little discount and you get a guarantee of sales. A win - win situation. A good customer will stay with a reliable vendor, I sure during these times they found you. Nothing like a real good steak grown your way.

I hope the pessimism you expressed at the end of this video turns out to be unwarranted, and that many of those new customers you've picked up choose to stay with you rather than returning to the supermarket once the crisis is past. • @richardanderson2411
    @richardanderson24114 жыл бұрын

    I'm pessimistic about small farm profitability period. When the future is uncertain (which it will be for a while), folks are rightfully careful with expenditures. Profitability on small farms is largely tied to producing a premium product. When cash is short, "premium" understandably goes out the window. It may sound rather elitist, but I think the key will be to develop a reasonably well off customer base that won't flex much based on the economic cycle. In denser rural areas, this should be feasible; for those folks in the middle of nowhere, not so much. Cultivating a financially secure upscale clientele may require a few cosmetic changes to presentation, but that beats losing the family farm.

    @@JustaFewAcresFarm Have you considered increasing the number of CSA shares you sell for next year? It seems to me that relying greatly on farmer's market sales for the next year or two might be risky for some of the reasons you mentioned. Changes in the way they are run, as well as public fears of Covid19 as well as the lack of tourist dollars could make that source of income unreliable. I realize that CSA prices are discounted over market prices, but having more of those guaranteed customers would be a good safety net in case the farmer's market money dries up. Another issue with farmer's markets is the time it takes to attend them. Have you factored the cost of the time you spend on activities related to that into your overheads? If not -- adding in those costs might make the CSA revenue relatively more attractive (especially if you can find other good/profitable uses for that time). I watch a channel run by a market gardener named Josh Sattin, and he talked about this in one of his videos. In the end he gave up on attending farmer's markets and home deliveries and shifted exclusively to restaurant sales, just because of the (often unproductive) time spent at the market. Of course, there are advantages to farmer's markets as an important source of publicity, especially when you are still growing your customer base, but once you have the customers you need, the value of that diminishes.
