Farming and Fixing!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

To start off this morning we are going to be feeding and cleaning up in the dairy barn. Then we move onto the fixing. Farming and fixing go together like peanut butter and jelly whether we like it or not. Overall it was another great day on the farm. Thank you all for watching!

Grew up and worked on our dairy farm…. I think the saddest day in my life is when I was 16 years old and dad decided to sell out go to work in town..When the semis came to haul the cows…. bull and all the calves..I was really sad… I walked in the milking parlor and the loafing shed..no more sounds of the cow chains clanging…. And I know it sounds crazy but I missed the smell of the corn silage….the hot steam…. But dad got a job being the supervisor for the county garage… He was happier…. Great video guys…brought memories of our cows and our dairy…❤❤

The number one thing that makes your small farm successful is your family working together. Many hands make small work of many jobs. Keep it going and much success in 2024! Happy New Year from all of us here at the Otter Creek Valley Farm, Eau Claire, Wisconsin

We made hay racks from rock elm that the old barn was built out of and we did use a 10 pound sledge hammer to drive the 10 penny nails. We did drill pilot holes too we still use those wagons and the planks are well over 100 years old. Sometimes I think about that when I load hay on those wagons.

I feel your pain and frustration trying to drive nails through hardwood. After many years of bent over nails, I finally decided to predrill before pounding. It does wonders for your blood pressure.

You should buy a small square bale bedding chopper throw your straw in that and you can grind your straw fine and a lot easier to work with does a better job staying in the stalls

That's how I had my near death accident, little snow & ice, not enough to put chains on until I found myself sliding backwards down the mountain on some ice. The only thing that saved my butt was a big old lonely hemlock tree on the side of the mountain and crashed into that or I'd been over the bank! We ain't doing that again! Tell Dad to put some oil on that spike when nailing oak!

Daily chores and miscellaneous repair jobs keep you folks busy!!! Sometimes it seems that for every item we fix, there are five more waiting in line. Always seems to be time well spent taking care of the odd jobs in the off-season rather than using valuable time during field work seasons.

When my dad and I would use old oak boards, he would dip the nails in grease and then you could drive them in. Sounds weird but it worked.

Have you looked at poly liners for the dump wagon? Silage slides out like butter, and the HDPE stuff comes in various sizes and thickness. Just a thought, and great video. Hope for higher milk $ in '24!

Watching all that hammering reminds me of an old cliche. “ He who is good with the hammer thinks everything is a nail. “. And this reminds me of doing chores in the winter but we seem to always have everything freeze. 🤦‍♂️

If you want a big job drilling holes and bolting your manger would stop them from ever coming loose. That's how they were in Dad's old stanchion milk parlor.

I see that someone mentioned you guys having a saw mill. When I was a boy grow up on our dairy farm we used sawdust for bedding. Wha do you think of my suggestion? Alway love watching you guys work, I can still smell the silage and hay.

We used sawdust as well. The only issues you can get into with sawdust is you gotta keep after it and keep fresh. It absorbs so well and can get easily packed into places you can get some nasty bacteria which if a critter gets an abscess in her hoof can get really bad fast. You can get the same kinda thing going on with any kind of bedding though. There is also cost. For some sawdust is cheaper or more expensive. Depends on your situation. Pros and cons. Pros and cons. Nothing is perfect I guess.

Also, stay away from walnut sawdust. That stuff is poison to farm animals. If sawdust is changed regularly, it shouldn't cause many problems.

Just my thoughts, I enjoy your videos but think you would be better served if your videos were more current, rather than a 2-3 week delay. In your area, weather events change as seasons change and I think you loose people when you showing things that are that delayed......
