    Thank you so much for All your detailed information! They will start our pond in four days! It will cost us much more but, they are widening a creek that leads into the pond as well as fine-tuning the property to be able to mow all around it. I am glad I found your video and was able also, to read all the comments. I was nervous and wondering if we should go through with it... I am very encouraged and excited to get started! Thank you again❤️

    Wow!! You have an excellent pond for $9,000. It’s nice and deep, looks like you had some help putting some large stones at unique angles by the contractor. It’s going to be really good habitat right away so you will be able to introduce fish even sooner! I did a pond/small lake at 3 acres filling in a larger valley, of course. I live in Canada so it is Canadian dollars that I am pricing in, but when all was said and done for the pond, I was close to $300,000. Natural clay bottom, maybe an acre of trees to be removed, but we did a lot of contouring to the bottom. The lake averaged just over 14 feet but has a maximum depth of about 28 feet. Trout need to get away from the heat! Here we can’t put bass in a pond legally, because they are not natural (central/southern Alberta, Canada). We did stock the pond with 2 different hybrid species of Rainbow trout! One that tends to hunt minnows, and the other that is more in favour of bugs (in very simple terms, I don’t fully know the true definition). Unfortunately the stocking was after I had sold the 21 acres acreage, home etc. I was injured by a texting driver that ran a red light at 65 mph and broadsided my passenger side of my 60 Bronco and did not recover to the extent we had hoped for. Life gets in the way sometimes,,,, I was compensated appropriately, but that doesn’t change the constant pain. Don’t text and drive! There was almost another $450,000 in landscaping with a paved path almost the entire way around the pond as I was building it for children to have access to in order to learn to fish. I wanted the disabled to be able to access multiple key fishing locations as well! The couple that bought the place from me have finished the landscaping, even with the drought we are having here, and made sure the pond was stocked! It is filled mostly by irrigation water that is strained to a pretty fine level to keep the pike, walleye, and other species of fish out that would eventually kill all the trout! That’s why the minnow eating hybrid for any of those pesky ones that got through. Thing is, I had the place for about 1 year, with the shop and yard work/paving as well as the stage I reached on the pond, I was able to get about $985,000 more than I had into the place!! That pond was very desirable and a big plus for the acreage! Sooooo $9,000 for 3/4 acre,,,,,,,,, SWEET!!! haha. You will have family memories that will last a lifetime! That’s priceless! I really enjoyed the video and seeing your boy interact with the animals was keen. He is gentle and respectful, seems to be always interested!! I hope you and your family get to enjoy that pond for a lifetime!!

    That must be an amazing build you were a part of. Sounds like some great trout habitat for sure! I had the guys help me set the big rocks before they left, then we constructed the small stuff. We waited until the pond filled (about 6 months) before stocking. The fish have done great though. They are growing well. The bluegill and fathead minnows have successfully spawned. The bass should be ready to spawn next spring. It is a lot of fun to see the progress. I appreciate the kind words!

I also don't have clay so I was quoted 3 days of dozer work ( $2500) and 150 yards of clay for about $1200. I hope I can get a decent pond built for 4000 and if needed can do 5000. $9,000? I would have thought double that. Your dirt man is not getting rich. $100/hour is more than reasonable for an excavator + operator. Congratulations on a nice project.

    Those are artificial fish habitat. Like trees that won’t rot. There are places that sell them, but we just made ours out of buckets, tubing and concrete… Good luck on your pond build! Come back and let us know how it’s going!

    The only water source feeding the pond is rainwater runoff? You didn’t need to bring in any clay?

  • @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead

    @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes the pond is filled completely by runoff. We didn’t bring in any clay, but our water level does fluctuate quite a bit. I think lining it with clay would have been better if we had the budget for it.

    My pond is new.The fry ate the leaves in the first day and stop from the next.Most of the fry died within a couple of days. What might be the reasons.Some said,it might be the muddy water,shallow etc

  • @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead

    @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’m sorry to hear that. That was a big disappointment I’m sure! There could be so many reasons. Too muddy or shallow is possible. I would recommend talking to a local extension agent or fish hatchery and get some water samples tested before trying again. We waited 8 months after building for our pond to fill and stabilize before stocking. It may just need a little time to settle in…. Good luck!
