Farm Communities Come Together

Farm Community Comes Together to help out one of our own. 60 years ago our neighbor Norm was there to help finish our harvest when my grandpa fell ill with cancer. 60 years later our community was able to return the favor. Highlight of my career, it's just what farming communities do. #payitforward

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

I recall back in the mid-50’s, a neighbor got sick and about 30 or 40 neighbors, including my dad, got together to plow his wheat stubble for summer fallow. They brought what they had, 3 to 5 bottom plows with levers and rope trips, and tractors with no cabs and no hydraulics. The ladies got together and fixed dinner (lunch). Fast forward 20 or so years, and I had taken a leave from my career to help my dad, who was ill. A neighbor was very ill and 2 neighbors organized the area to help. This time it was disking the wheat stubble for summer fallow. The appointed day came and everyone was supposed to be there at 8am. This was an extremely flat area and tractors and discs were coming from every point of the compass. It was quite a sight. They again brought what they had, old and new, small and four- wheel drive, with discs from 16’ to 50’. There were 52 tractors. As they arrived, the organizers put three into a field, and by noon, over 1500 acres had been done. The ladies had fixed dinner, and the farmer’s family had a bulk truck come out and fueled everyone while we were eating. One of the organizer’s teenage sons had been killed in a car wreck a week earlier, and everybody felt so good it was decided to go and do his. Another 1000 acres. I went back to my career (not in agriculture, unfortunately) and achieved a modicum of success, kudos and recognition, but that one day over 40 years ago is still one of the best memories of my life.

When I still worked in the collision repair shop there was a guy across town that the owner raced against and while they were friends they weren't like best friends or anything like that, one day he had a stroke and as a result was unable to work for for a few months. We picked up all his jobs and did all the work and all the money for the jobs too. He was a one man band as far as his shop was concerned so when we were down there working we also surprised him and cleaned/organized years of clutter that he had just been letting build up and essentially turned a completely new shop over to him after those 3 or 4 months when he was finally able to get back to work.

I was born in central Wisconsin, my father talks about farmers coming together during the hard times. Unfortunately we are living in northern Illinois now running some land and the farmers here will would rather buy ur land then help out one afternoon. Myself being a young farmer and listening to all kinds of farmers all over the United States makes me feel like we have landed in the wrong place. My father talked about the old farm in Wisconsin more than the farm were running in northern Illinois. Breaks my heart for him, at this day an age we all should be working together no matter what. Thanks Millennial Farmer for your videos and your millennial wisdom.

When I was a kid my Dad got his hand caught in a new idea mounted ear corn picker. We had 40 neighbors come over to help get our corn out in one day, ear corn and shell corn. It was really a sight to come home from school and see all the tractors, wagons and corn pickers. For every farmer there was his wife to help my mom feed everyone. I was really glad to come from a community like that.

In the spring 2015 my boss was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We actually found out right after planting. He took treatments all summer. Fall came we where giving it hell combining most of the neighbors where done. They called bosses son said they were coming to help. 7 Combines 12 grain carts and about 15-18 semis showed up plus we had our two combines and 4 grain carts and 9 trucks in the mix Pretty overwhelming. They wanted to get his crop out so he could spent what little time he had left with his family. It’s pretty cool to live in small communities where neighbors help neighbors in the time of need. You can bet when one of them needs help we will be there.

Just a few years ago our neighbor got laid up with an injury where he couldn't combine his oil sunflowers and all the neighbors got together and we had over 12 combines along with 4 grain carts and 8 trucks running to his bins. It's beautiful when people come together to help their fellow man. Agriculture is a beautiful thing.

There was a time when all Americans didn't hesitate to help a neighbor..and to do otherwise was considered about as low as anybody could get and it didn't matter if your politics was "blue" or "red"...you did the right thing together shoulder to shoulder regardless of who was in need. Thank you Johnson family for reminding us who we were as a people and as Americans. God bless!

G-Day mate, Thanks for the reference to Australia, I'm pretty sure when I'm on top of our grain leg I can see you guys at work in the field..😂🤣😅 Us farmers always come together to help neighbours, we have also done it in the past many times...last year we donated 1000 big square bakes to our southern farmer's that were in drought.... Another great video by the way.... Best farming channel by far...😎👍

I think its fantastic that the community came together to help a family that otherwise could have lost their crops. That's the beauty of a farming community, always willing to drop what they're doing to come to the aid of another in need.

I remember when I was a little boy one of my daddy best friend was kill at work just a few feet from my daddy. The Saturday after his funeral my daddy and some other guys from work went out and cut wood for his widow so her and her young son would have wood to heat their house for the next few years. Daddy said when everyone got there with the wood they cut that day she probably had enough wood for 5 years. That is the way it should be people taking care of those in need. When I first became disabled people help us out before got my disability check started. God bless all of you for taking care of her need.

That’s one of the most heartwarming things that happens on the farm! It is hardly ever broadcasted. Most farmers will drop everything and help that family out no matter what. I have not been a part of an event like that yet but I’m excited to participate when the time comes.

The year was 1996. I was driving grain truck and one of our local farmers lost his daughter in a horrible crash. Well it was wheat harvest time and farmers and trucking companies came together from 50 miles around. What he said takes 3 weeks for him and his guys to harvest, we did in 1 day. Had to be 30 combines, 50 grain carts and in told number of semis. If you never seen combine after combine after combine coming through a field all together. It’s a awesome sight.

God bless you, for contributing! ALL combines were wonderfully built and they CANNOT see each others' colors, either. All they know and love to do, is harvest crops! If only PEOPLE would behave the same! By the way, I'm your dad's age!

True all over the world. My hometown here in southeastern NSW Australia has about 1600 people and most of us are locals (3 generations of family or more). We get alot of blow ins from Canberra who are retired and move here for the small town environment. They learn quick about being a community or they leave. I love knowing i help the community and they are there when i need help.

We have had many harvesting bees over the years in the Thief River Falls area for farm families in need. It is fun to see a large number of combines gather and get that farmer's crop off in one day. When the job is finished there is usually a Cenex fuel truck waiting to fill everyone's combine with diesel fuel. And throughout the day the ladies bring out good home-cooked meals.

Problem with people these days, treat others the way you want to be treated. Bless ya Johnson family, and all the others that helped as well. You’re part of the back bone of America!

When the community come together to help another farmer it really is something special. My father in law doesnt get along with many other famers around us (buy land and other deals) create some friction, but when he has 3 strokes and was in the hospital at the same time we were trying to seed tobacco, we had people we never talked to and others we have had issues with come on there own free will and give us a hand, when he got out of the hospital all tobacco was seeded greenhouses ready and everything. Farmers have to have eachothers back, even if I dont like someone, if someone needs a hand, we all have your back
