Here in the south 36/38 inch rows were pretty much standard because of cotton equipment the reason cotton equipment was set up for those row spacings was because that was pretty much how much room it took for a mule or horse to be able to negotiate between rows....

Here in Brazil we use the same planter to soybean and corn. Our rows are almost 20'', we use metric system, so we plant in 50cm. Another common row space here is 45cm, something about 17,7in. It's difficult to find people that plant soybean with rows bigger than 50cm (20''), but corn, many farmers use 70cm or 90cm. In fact, like you said, this things don't determine if you will get a high yield or not, it's just about how you work inside your farm.

I always liked drilled beans they were easier to cut and seemed to make better most years

Different crops just require different spacing.. Grass seed crops for instance, some require a lot of room to stool, some are planted on 24"-30" rows for seed, yet for forage the same variety may be 6"-7" or even broadcast.

I feel like these guys should be doing commentary for the Superbowl rather than talking about row spacing lol. Good video nonetheless!

I have compared different row spacings in soybeans for my Bachelor's degree last fall. There was little to no diffence in yield between 15" and 30" row spacings, which means I am planting at 30" from now on - I can use my corn planter and it's easier to get in the field to spray post-emerge.

Last year was not a year to do field trials of any kind. If you go to agronomic trials from any major seed company you will find soybeans on 15 inch rows out yield 30 by about 3-5 bushels. I personally have had increases of over 12 bpa. Not to mention the faster canopy closure and less lodging. When it comes to corn for grain you're right, very little difference, but corn for silage you can gain a few more tons per acre by being able to push the population a little more.
