My mom taught at Regent Park Public School, in the early 1960s. Many of her students had mental and/or social issues, made worse by poverty. Even then, the neighbourhood had a bad reputation. All of the teachers were warned to make sure they were out of the area by nightfall. Toronto made the same mistake as Liverpool, Manchester, and other cities in England did. They were convinced that all the people in the old slums needed was clean, modern housing. By failing to provide the necessary social services and healthcare, all they did was move the same issues into nice, new housing.

I remember watching a film made in the early 50s called Farewell Oak Street about families moving into Regent Park buildings when they were brand new. Seventy years later those buildings are considered obsolete and being demolished. Full circle…

Some of the TCHC rooming houses just north of Sherbourne and Dundas need to be levelled and replaced with a 40-storey condo. It will create a great mixed neighbourhood and the low-income people there can be relocated until affordable housing can be built for them that is better than these nearly 200-year-old houses that they now live in.

@@shauncameron8390 Right now there are approximately 8,000 homeless people in Toronto. 55,000 people in Ontario and about 240,000 people in Canada. That has a high cost in other areas. GDP, policing, health, and social services. If we don't build social housing those costs go up exponentially. Toronto's budget is over 11.35 billion just for policing and healthcare, making up 60% of the entire provincial budget both of these budgets are increasing at a compounded 10% annual rate.
