FAREWELL - Airbus A340 In 2023
The Airbus A340 is a widebody aircraft slowly but surely departing the industry. How many companies still fly the plane, how many are in storage and what is its future outlook. Today, I explore the Airbus A340 and its role within the industry and how one airline is the true flag bearer.

I still see the -600 for Lufthansa here at JFK. She's a beauty. Long asf
Never rode on one before, but glad that our trip this summer is to Europe on an 340-600 and back on a 747-8. Thanks Lufthansa for keeping these iconic aircraft flying.

I'm doing the same I paid a little extra to have my outbound flight be on a A340-300 and my return on a 747-8 Getting one last chance to fly on these is worth a little extra vs just flying over on a 787 or 330

European Aviation has an A340-500 in storage currently, G-ECLF. More and more European Cargo A346s are getting pressed into service, as some have now been converted to freighters.

The A340 was planned before ETOPS became a thing, that killed the A340. But the sister A330 with only 2 engines is a great success.

Glad I got to fly on Lufthansa and Air France A340s, same with 747s. Will miss the quads
I was lucky to fly a South African A346 in 2012. Was very nice.
My heart sank. I’ve never been on one, and I don’t think I ever will :(
Lufthansa is kinda crazy in terms of aircraft type they operates. they are the only one who is still running all quads available - A340 (-300/-600), A380, B747(-400/-800) and also runs the new equips like A330, A350 and 787 (-9) types. And they are still profitable last year. The Technik is really something else.
It should be noted that the one operated by Iran Aseman Airlines (EP-APA) is A340-300 MSN 002, the original second prototype.
Flew a Virgin A340-600 from LHR to Shanghai in July 2007. Beautiful aircraft.
Flew A340-300 of Air Namibia in 2009, wonderful flight..... still want to travel on a -600...
Great content!! 👍
It's a shame. I love quad jets.

Pretty sure a lot of cargo airlines will be interested in buying These old 340s
The first time I flew them was on Gulf Air then on Lufthansa Iberia Cathay and Qatar all enjoyable and a great experience
Cleaned up, it's one of the better looking birds in the sky, especially the -300.
Surinam Airways has just started to fly their “new” A340-300 to Amsterdam. It used to fly with Air Belgium. PZ-TCW.
Looking for a Lufthansa a-340-600 Schedule from the states. Would be awesome to fly on one before they are gone.
Great vid! Gotta love the quads! A few months ago I flew on vacation to Europe and purposely chose to fly on LH. On my way to FRA, I caught the 747-8i (from ORD) and on my way back to MCO, I flew on the A340-300. I'll keep trying to catch as many quads as I can before they're sadly gone.
Such a beautiful aircraft being laid to rest!
A340 great aircraft so underrated
Next to the 747, the A340 is one of my favorite aircraft. I typically fly to Germany from the States a couple of times a year and Lufthansa's A340 is the primary aircraft used for my flights from Boston. I'll be sorry to see it leave.

I agree !!
Currently in May 2023 European Aviation are operating the A340-600 Reg number G-ECLB freighter from Bournemouth (BOH) England to Chengdu (CTU) China on regular return flights non-stop. Also A340's can just be seen parked up from the road which runs alongside the airport, but with a soil bank and trees getting in the way of a perfect view.
I don’t think I’ve ever been aboard an A340. My last trip on a 747 was in 2018, and I don’t expect to fly on a quadjet again in my lifetime (I’m almost 62).
My first ever flight was on an A340 Virgin Atlantic, seeing how they are fading away is kind of like removing part of living memories
A340-600 definitely used to be my favourite aircraft ever, I think the only plane I can admit I like more is the A350-1000
Frankfurt & Munich A340 capital of the world
It’s a nice aircraft I flew on it back a few years ago on Thai Airways from JFK to BKK nonstop what a long flight but a good one thanks for the videos J.
A340 is getting the job done,
I got a heap of photos in Hong Kong of A340 300 & 600s back in 2018. A340 300 is, in my view, the 'prettiest of all widebodies, along with the L1011s. A fantastic record, 2nd to none in reliability with those CFM engines. No fatalities & only 1 hull loss, a botched Air France landing. Unfortunately, while there are A330s available 2nd hand, there's not much prospect of seeing any A340Fs, so to speak
I rode one a few hours ago Johannesburg to Zurich
Still the best looking quad jet of all time (Concorde not included) particularly the 600 delighted that Lufthansa are still operating the type, the new Lufthansa livery looks stunning, miss watching the Virgin 346 operating out of Heathrow. Hopefully still around within Europe for another few years.
From LA to Tahiti and back on A340s. The trip down was miserable. The interior had never been upgraded since delivery and was very "old school" and the entertainment systems at most seats were barely serviceable. Add to that the lack of individual cabin air vent nozzles at each seat. The section of cabin where I flew was stifling hot an muggy while other sections were very cold. The trip back had an updated cabin and was much better. Air Tahiti soon retired them and replaced them with 787s.
Luckily, I flew China Eastern's Airbus A340-300 in 2011 from Rome to Shanghai, one year prior to its retirement. If you're brave enough, I think you could experience A340 in either Iran or Venezuela, both countries are rated by SmartTravellers as DO NOT TRAVEL.
Ironically just before I watched this. I was reading an article that the EASA certificated the A340 from passenger to freighter program by Avensis Aviation. The article came out a few days ago. Maybe there is hope to keep the A340 in the air a little longer and I think it'll be a good for freighter operations.
I remember the “4 Engines 4 Long Haul” decals Virgin Atlantic applied to their jets back in the day when the Boeing 777s were new.
I miss the SAA A340 fleet....
Lufthansa still flies an A340 to my home Airport CPT, daily from Frankfurt. Eidelweiss also flies one a few times a week from Zurich. Swiss even flies them to JHB. Not sure why they're persisting with the A340 for so long on their SA and Namibia flights when they now have many A350 and A330 in their fleet.
De belles observations

I like the A340(-600) he was the most beautiful Airbus ever, until the arrive of the A350-1000, but not only that, he have one of the lowest accident rate of all time too.

You have just pissed off Femenists everywhere.
I only got to fly on an A346 once, but I have to say it is probably my favorite, even surpassing the A350 and A380 which are probably number 2 and 3 on my list.
Im going to munich next week, i will try to take picture of lufthansa a340
I would love to fly on an A340.
Can you explain how its cheaper to store than use a quad..i mean they still make money right?
Im a Boeing fan but I also think the A346 is a beast. It is as powerful as it is big and it would've been one heck of a freighter. Thankfully LH lands at my job airport so I still get to see them with regularity. Also LX comes here so I do see its occasional A343. That one is a bit doggy, im not too crazy about it. But the A346 is one of my favorite Airbus aircraft.
I have flown the -200 (SAA Paris to JNB) , -300 (Iberia San José Costa Rica -Madrid) and the -600 (Qatar Airways Paris-Doha) .
Eurowings of Germany also flys a A340-300. Would that be listed under Lufthansa's operating aircraft ?
I flew on one only once: Lufthansa from the Middle East to Frankfurt. It was nice, like most other modern airliners. The Economy seats had almost no legroom, but that’s the fault of Lufthansa, not Airbus.
Lufthansa is posting some of the best numbers. So, people assuming they must be losing $ due to flying 747s and A340s are wrong.
Boeing’s inability to deliver Lufthansa’s new 777X orders is keeping the A340 alive. I love diversity in aircraft. So, I hope they don’t disappear, but I know they will.
I flew on a a340-300 from jfk to Frankfurt with Lufthansa, and I’m sorry to say it wasn’t a good flight at all, definitely something to remember though
My own analysis revealed as of March 2023, at least 130 A340s are still operational across 4 variants : 8 Airbus A340-200 67 Airbus A340-300 19 Airbus A340-500 and 36 Airbus A340-600
South African Airways no longer operates the A340:( They replaced hem with the A330.
I collect models of a340s too to mourn their losses.
Won't miss it
Noooooooooooo! The 4 engine classic. Air Canada had a few and couldn't get rid of them fast enough. That leaves the a380 as last chance to fly in a modern x 4 engines aircraft.

Especially the -300 with those tiny engines.
It's not going away any time soon. Mislead information
Lufthansa has been hanging on to their A340-300's *WAY* too long. Should have retired them in favor of more A350-900's a long time ago.
In all honesty, there was no real need for the A340. Considering everyone was going to twin engines, it was already out dated. Plus, 747 was a much better aircraft for a four engine aircraft. The first gen A340's were also under powered.
Proposition : 4 engines is safer than 2 ? Questions : What will the Military do ? Transport, AWACS, Rivet Joint types ??? What about Presidential planes of World leaders, i.e., Air Force One ??? Concerns : Think of a twin engine 'jumbo' jetliner, a 'full Load of Souls, Cargo,' Weather/headwinds, & a complex cascading engine 'fault-error' messages from the computers etc., & BTW, you're a long haul flight in mid Pacific ! All this 'Woke-Green Environmental' I$$ue$' will eventually become superfluous & die down..
