Farewell Adelaide MAN NL202 diesels - 1996-2022 | Video Compilation

Here in Adelaide, the MAN NL202 diesel fleet has almost completely been retired, marking an end of an era for true pre-Adelaide Metro / Privatisation era vehicles. The first unit entered service in November 1996, and here in November 2022, we find only four NL202s left in service, albeit used only when necessary and not for much longer. NL202s were being progressively retired as they reached 25 years old until June 2022, when a major reduction to services caused by Gawler train line resumptions caused a major cut to NL202 operations, bringing a number of around 45 units in traffic down to 10. As the months have gone by, this ten has been reduced to just four; 246, 247, 266, 267 remaining in service, based out of both St Agnes and Edinburgh North depots.
The inspiration for this video came from a recent event in which NL202s from St Agnes depot were driven to Morphetville depot for long term storage, quite possibly their last trip on the road. This included 12 NL202s traversing the 40 minute journey from St Agnes to Morphetville over the course of 3 evenings, with four units being brought in close formation each night. Footage of this can be seen toward the end of the video.
The rest of footage is just videos I have compiled over the months, they’re not fantastic by any means as external videography was never a major focus, however some valuable memories have been captured through this footage.
Enjoy this short video compilation farewelling Adelaide’s last ‘good’ buses.

As a follow up to this video, as of tonight, Thursday 16 March 2023, the last diesel NLs finally met their fate, with 266 and 267 finishing up as the last of their type on service. Both St Agnes buses, they had been operating out of Newton depot for the last few weeks, with 246 and 267 being sent down around a month ago, and 266 taking 246’s place upon it’s retirement. Tonight, the last runs for diesel NLs were broken shifts out of Newton, with 266 running the 5:20pm 106 to Magill from Stop E3 Currie (albeit 30 minutes late, leaving E3 5:55pm and arriving Stop 26 Magill Rd, Magill at 6:33pm, 31 minutes late. 267 operated the 5:45pm H30S from West Lakes, departing the city, Stop E3 Currie St at 6:24pm (on time). It then arrived at Rostrevor, Stop 30 Stradbroke Rd at 6:57pm, 1 minute early, marking the last ever diesel powered MAN NL202 service for Adelaide, and quite possibly anywhere in the world. It also marks as the last bus with the classic, iconic ‘tartan’ seats and frames, known to adorn Adelaide’s buses since the early 1980s. Truly the last of the best buses.

As a bus fan, I was in Adelaide for a year from 2019 to 2020 and was very lucky enough to have rided on these classic MAN buses several times before they retired. They are just awesome, special and with beautiful engine sounds. I love the ZF whine so much that I always find videos to listen. No such bus had existed in my home city Hong Kong.

1332, 1337, 1737, 2232, 2242, and 262 are most likely going to be scrapped because they weren’t in service towards the start of 2022, 1332 already blew it’s gearbox, 1337 and 1737 were in the process of having their spare parts removed from the buses and being salvaged to bring back some MAN NL232’s into service that were out of action, 262 hasn’t been on the roads since December 2021, the last time I saw it was at Port Adelaide finishing a route, so there is a good chance that the ones that don’t go up for sale are the ones more then likely to be headed to Sims Metal. It’s a bit sad that 1737 won’t be getting preserved since that had a nice loud ZF, but that’s just how bus depots make decisions.

1332 has already been auctioned, it was fixed and sold, as will presumably all of the other NL202s except ones Torrens buy for parts. Can confirm 1337 has been stripped for parts, unsure of the state of 1737, was told it was being prepared for sale some months ago but that never eventuated. 262 is dead and is being raided for parts at St Agnes, 2232 has been out of traffic since the Southlink takeover in 2020 so who knows where that is. Not really the depots that make these decisions, more so the govt and companies buying otherwise not sellable units for parts

Extremely sad to see the NL's go, they are very nice buses. First it was the SL's and now the NL's.

We still got the MAN NL202 CNG buses kicking around, however 751 to 762 and 767 are already withdrawn from service, 763 and 764 haven’t got much long left in service, so I would suspect these two buses would be the next ones to go. I think there is a possibility that Morphettville might have received some 1600’s gas buses from Newton, but I don’t think that’s true, but I do remember seeing 1761 and 1762 the other week running out of Morphettville depot. Luckily the only preserved diesel NL202’s so far consist of 1333 and 1739, with a few more to join preservation in the next 6 to 12 months. The kickdown of 254 (ex 1741) is probably my favourite thing about that bus, so it would be pretty cool if someone would film it, hopefully if one of the BPASA members can purchase 254 when it goes up for sale, but wait and see what actually happens.

@@johnp3247 762 is still in traffic also, albeit out of Newton. To my knowledge 700 series NLs are being pulled as their ‘on paper’ replacement arrives; as another hybrid arrives, you can probably expect an NL to be pulled. Highly doubt Morphetville will get any more gas buses, all the new stuff is going there so no need for gas buses. Only time you’d see a Newton one out of there is most likely as a changeover. 1334 is also preserved, however yeah, hopefully we see some more NLs saved

@@joehicks9317 I just took a look on the internet, and it appears 254 might be up for sale now. It’s expected to be sold at the auctions this Thursday.
