FAQ | why get a master's in public health?

I get a lot of questions about what you can do with a public health degree and just what public health is in general. So for this video, I gathered some statistics on where new MPH grads are working and what some of the common roles are for new public health grads. I talk about popular industries for MPH grads, what departments have which jobs, and I even interviewed some real-life public health practitioners from across the country! Hope you enjoy and be sure to message me on Instagram to tell me what public health is to you (:
One of my New Years resolutions is to post more consistently to answer everyone's questions about:

Glad the video was able to help! I actually know a couple of people who did the dual degree program for MSW/MPH. As for jobs, this pandemic has made "public health" a well known field in the U.S. right now which should mean an increase in funding and jobs for at least a few years! So I wouldn't worry too much about the pandemic negatively affecting the public health job market for MPH grads (:

I'm an MBBS graduate, technically I'm a doctor but I didn't think it is in my future, anyway I'm thinking of going into either public health or biomedical which do you think in your opinion is a better career?? I'm interested in both but I have been discourage from biomedical, I'm only pursuing biomedical because I like bench type research but I hear its career prospects aren't great is that true, please I could use some help with this.

Hi.I'm a MBBS student. I want to study MPH abroad. Under MBBS, we have a subject called Community Medicine. Where we have studied minimally about public health. But, I'm an introvert. In MPH, is it necessary to be extrovert? How the study conducted? Is it theory based Or you have to be like talk to people all the time?

  • @MomentsInMed

All schools have different program structures but I think that in most grad programs there is some discussion-based learning. That being said, my experience at Columbia has been that professors won't make you talk in class if you don't want to. Also, there are definitely some online programs though where the discussion would all be virtual/typed. Hope that's helpful!

My work in behavioral health research was a lot of time on the computer or in meetings. You are constantly writing papers, reading papers, developing surveys, analyzing results through statistical software, and brainstorming with your team. Can be super interesting if it’s something you love! But can also feel tedious when it’s not something you’re passionate about. Occasionally you might do more “interpersonal” tasks like running focus groups or qualitative interviews but that’s probably less frequent and is then followed by a lot of transcribing! Haha

Great question! So you would not want to do both an MPH and MHA because they can be quite similar (and in my opinion that would probably be a waste of time/money). I explain the difference between an MHA and an MPH in Health Policy & Management (HPM) this way: - an MHA is for people who want to do business and see healthcare as a way to do that - an MPH in HPM is for people who want to do healthcare/public health and see business as a way to do that I hope this makes sense and is helpful!

I can't say for sure because I haven't done any research on it myself but an MPH is a masters level degree just like any other so I would assume that you could teach at community college with an MPH. I definitely know someone who was teaching at a college with her MPH (but she was simultaneously pursuing a DrPH). Unfortunately I can only give this anecdotal advice since I am not pursuing a career in teaching but I see no reason why you couldn't get a job teaching with an MPH (:

@@khairakaur3509 Hey, I am not entirely sure about the criteria for you as you will be coming as an international student; you might need to talk to your embassy or contact a relevant university for further information. Since you have completed GNM, it might be worth looking into doing a masters or at least try to get some credit points for your previous studies when applying to study in Australia. There are currently many universities that offer a bachelor's or honors program in Public Health as well as many alternative pathways. In terms of your future and career opportunities, it depends on your Visa Criteria and where you might wanna work in the future as it is harder to get a job in a government organization/ agency if you are not an Australian Citizen which can drastically reduce your chance or put pressure to get a job; but always keep in mind that current laws can change literally anytime and there is always an alternative pathway if you really want to pursue it. From my experience, I thoroughly enjoy studying Public Health and Health Promotion and I recommend it to anyone to pursue it if you have the passion:) Good Luck!

At Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, the Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) is 2 years long. You can apply to do an accelerated 1-year program if you have significant career experience or another high level degree but otherwise, the MPH is 2 years. The 2 year program includes a certificate which is similar to a “minor” in college. My certificate was in Comparative Effectiveness & Outcomes Research but it was a part of my MPH, it was not a desperate degree nor could I have done the certificate without doing the MPH. I hope this helps!

Check out this video about the cost of Columbia’s MPH: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gX6j1dJ7nabIY9Y.html Due to the time commitment of a master’s degree, it would be very difficult to study for USMLE Step 1 at the same time. US medical schools give students time off to dedicate all of their time to Step 1 studying. An MPH program would not give you the same level of dedicated study time.

Not annoying at all 💕 and MPH programs take people from a huge variety of backgrounds! Your undergrad degree or previous jobs don’t really matter as long as you can show you’re passionate for the field
