Hello and welcome to Show Me Cables. Today we’ll be taking a look at difference between a digital coax and digital optical cable.
There are two options for superior audio when setting up your home theater. The first being digital optical, also known as a Toslink cable.
Toslink cables use fiber optics to send a digital audio signal and feature a squared connector.
A digital coax cable is slightly less common, but is still found on a lot of media and audio equipment.
The digital coax uses an RCA connector like you would find on the standard A/V block of your TV, but it can typically be identified by an orange port.
These cables will also provide a digital audio signal, but using gold plated connectors and high quality shielding opposed to fiber optics.
Both cables will provide superior audio clarity and the choice between them usually comes down to which option you have on your equipment.
For more information on the digital optical cables, you can click here: • S/PDIF Toslink Digital...
Or for the digital coax cables, you can click here: • Professional S/PDIF Di...

*FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS A REAL ANSWER: Use a high quality HDMI OR Coax..* *Coaxial* has superior quality but only if you use an actual coax cable (not an RCA). However it is also susceptible to noise / interference from other devices & cables. *Optical* isolated signal and high bandwidth, but beware 90% of receivers are limited to 48/96KHz via optical (as opposed to 24-bit/192kHz on coax and HDMI). It was originally intended for 2 channel devices like CD players, not modern surround sound. Use optical if you notice buzzing noise from your other cables. This is an older format that only stuck around because of widespread support & compatibility. *HDMI* Ironically the simplest option is arguably the best. Mid to High range HDMI cables from last couple years are superior to Optical & in some cases Coax.. Only reason not to use HDMI is if you have an older receiver that does not support uncompressed HDMI audio. Just make sure you have a proper cable & not the $5 chinese shit from bargain bin at walmart TL:DR: Instead of using both HDMI and coaxial for your surround sound, get one higher quality HDMI (if your receiver supports it). Otherwise use a coax. Cheap cables sound slightly worse and the most expensive cable is a waste of money. Mid range priced are usually best option

Since a boy, I been a really fan from the good music sound, the only way to find out is to try both cables, the difference between both cables is, the digital optical cable deliver a clear and sharp sound, but it won't give you a solid bass, the sound of a coaxial cable it won't give you a sharp sound, but is clear and the bass is more deep and stronger, if you can use an equalizer you can have a sharp sound and well but with a lot better bass sound and if you use a tube amplifier with a quality press amp, you can have almost the old console record players. Bottom of line, optical digital will give good sound on a low volume, with coaxial you can enjoy the music with high volume with less distortion

Hello,I have an ASUS XONAR DX sound cart and I use 2 ways for listening .The first one is using the SPDFI port for my amplifier (optical connection ) and the second one is a coaxial connection (not using the soundcard in this way) . I notice, that the sound quality with the soundcard (optical connection) is by far better..Really fantastic quality...BUT.. When I listen from Spotify Premium (better sound quality..they say) in some classical songs (with piano) I hear a tricky sound like deformations. When I turn it to coaxial connection the deformations disappear. I hope to understand my problem..Why this happens ??

My spdif (square)cables also came with adapters for each end of the cable that looks like it MIGHT allow me to plug this cable into a (mini round rca) coaxial port by simply attaching the adapter to the end of the cable.. is this correct?? otherwise what are they for then if the way the signal is sent different? ... i guess it's for mini toslink..

@taxivid Probably doesn't matter if it's a short cable. Worth a try. Easy to find the digital spec cables on Amazon if you want to make sure. I think that any real problems with audio coax could be intermittent, sketchy and hard to isolate. Better to just pay the few extra dollars and remove all doubt.

This is barely an explanation of the physical differences. Toslink is usually slower than Coax since most devices with Toslink uses LEDs. But then again Toslink cables isolate and are not acting as antennas... why am I even writing this...

There's other differences, like jitter, bandwidth, etc. I came here because I don't remember the bandwidth difference and if Digital Coax/SPIDF is capable of more than 2 channels and was hoping for a quick description there. How sad that these people can't mention that in a video about differences between the two.

Very informative. However, I am surprised there are no cables that have a coaxial part on one end and an optical part on the other. Meaning if such a cable exists, you can hook up your optical input on your sound system and the coaxial out on your HDTV or VCR or DVD/Blu-Ray Player or vice versa. The best of both worlds as they say. What do you think? You think a Coaxial/Optical Digital Cable sounds like a good idea. If it's so, it is better than wasting money on a Coaxial to Optical converter.

  • @ShowMeCables

Hello, Thanks for the feedback. Digital Coax sends a low voltage electrical signal across a copper conductor, where the Optical Cable is sending a light signal across a plastic/glass tube, so unfortunately a converter is the only way to connect the two signal types. A converter will convert the electrical signal to a light signal or vice versa.
