I got Sega 3D Classics for Christmas last year solely for Fantasy Zone 2 W. I got into the series through Opa-Opa's appearance in All-Stars Racing (he and the Bonanza Bros. are my mains in that game), played the original at an arcade in a dentist office of all places, and really want to experience the whole series. (Mainly Super, the Maze, and Gear) When I get money I'll definitely try to get Opa-Opa Bros before the 3DS Shop inevitably goes taken offline. Fantasy Zone 2 W was tough for me but very satisfying to play. I never even knew there was a mode in the 3DS version that's basically a score attack. That's cool. Wonderful video all around.

Wow a dentist office arcade!? Sign me up. Its really cool how Sega can get new generations into their back catalogue through rereleases and cameos. And yeah definitely pick up Opa-Opa bros when you can before its too late. When the 3ds eshop is in its final days I'll be pushing the hell out of the Sega 3d Classics and Indie games I like

Just a remark about the Brazilian expression of surprise and excitement "opa". It's actually pronounced just like opa-opa, with the open O. The way you said it, "upa", is another entirely different expression, usually used with horses, the equivalent to "giddy up". ;)

I was looking for some more Fantasy Zone coverage and came across your video. Great stuff, man. The series is so underappreciated. I Remain hopeful that we'll see another game in the series (Looking at you M2!) and a Switch port of the FIIW.

Wonderful retrospective! You went into more detail than I expected, and you clearly know a lot about this underappreciated series. Did you know that the Master System port of FZ1 has cheats to let you buy about 20 lives and get infinite special weapon usage? That makes the Master System version my favorite, after Master System Tears.

Fantasy Zone 2 W was THE GAME that made be a fan of the series, I've been collecting all the physical goods I could find, even purchasing a Sega Mark III for Galactic Protector. It's too bad that the best version of 2 DX is not easily available anymore, especially due to the closure of the eShop, that game is just perfection and they really need to push it onto the Switch for more people to experience it. I first came for Puyo Puyo on the go with 3D Classics Collection, but stayed for Opa-Opa. Something else too, there was a music box of Fantasy Zone, I think it came with the Album you've showcased, but that thing was so rare that I only saw it once, I was forced to buy the Album a second time to not miss on it.

How many 2D shmups did SEGA make? Fantasy Zone is the only series they seemed to have made but i'm not sure if this is the only shmup they made. Also, this needs waaayyyy more views (most of your videos do).

Nintendo better have M2 port all the 3DS Fantasy Zones once the Switch 2 drops with the dual screen functionality (when docked in the new open face dock and/or airdock)

I love fantasy zone too. But why is it underated? To an extent, I keep on imagining a Fantasy zone 3, and I do imagine the bosses in the Sega master system versions of both fantasy zone 1 and 2 that are not used in the arcade version. For example, if you play the master system version of fantasy zone 1 and get to the 4th level boss, it's not your usual blue two armed prana plant like monster, instead it's a dragon like head shooting half triangles and you have to shoot the tongue in the center of the bosses open mouth. Another example is also the fourth level in fantasy zone 2, instead of your usual robot fire ball shooting arms that creates fire walls, you get a big ol' dragon (that looks like it doesn't have wings) that shots fire at you and you gotta shoot it's head to defeat it.

You made a comparison between this series and Kirby, and I think that might just be pretty accurate. Another thing they seem to have in common is strangely elaborate and surprisingly depressing lore, lol (This video has made me seriously consider picking up the first game on Switch, and possibly 2W on 3DS, even though I have so many other games to play... haha, what's wrong with me?)

lol why you didn't mention the 7th boss in fantasy zone?! In 7th boss you have to buy "Rocket Engine" just to avoid to touch you cause If you didn't kill him quickly he will become very difficult to kill cause he will move very fast and you have to dodge and attack quickly

This channel looks cool, but a word to the wise. Even though you will hear all sorts of people say it now, "Arcades" is like saying "Vinyls." They were "Arcade Games" "Arcade Machines" "the coin operated arcade version" never "Arcades" as that would describe a place. An Arcade is a place, not a flavor of video game. It's from Rome or Greece or something but I'm not looking it up, suffice to say it was a district of Hellenistic cities. So it's like you are calling a mix drink "a bar" or "bars." It doesn't make any sense except in retrospect to say this as the "arcades," as you are calling them were the only video games at first. So, they were just "those video game things they have in the arcades" which used to have pinball and fusball etc electro mechanical devices. Would you call a pinball machine a "pool hall?" Nope. The distinction went the other way going forward through history. Records were 10" shellac 78rpm speed singles. They came in books called albums, like a photo album. A collection of single records was an album of records. Then RCA invents a new format, the 7" 45rpm single. Then Columbia competes in a format war introducing the 12" 33 1/3 long play (L.p.) which could fit an album being 22 minutes each side. Then the slow playing 10" and fast playing 12" was used for "extended play singles" which were later known as "E.P.s" then...after decades...other formats came out. But records were already records, so pointing out they were now being made of vinyl would be like calling tapes "plastics" it makes absolutely no sense. No, instead the new difference is reflected in the terminologies. Tape (reel to reel) 8tracks (an endless loop of tape with skipping track capability different than other tape formats for this reason) cassette tapes became simply "tapes" after 8tracks faded since they were the only tapes going mostly and very common. CDs, other stuff...then you guys have digital stuff and streaming and you are looking back seeing a black circle of vinyl that people told you was a *VINYL* record as by now we have had all sorts of album formats so a vinyl album is now what you see. This was impossible to see going forward in time and only makes sense in retrospect. Same with coin ops. It's now a world that has had other things, so the distinction you see is how the *real, original thing* differs from what you're used and seen. But that difference doesn't exist in reality, by nature, and is projected by the experience of the viewer. We never went to the arcades to play the arcades. We went to the arcade to play some video games. Which were on Arcade styled cabinets that we refered to as arcade cabinets. "The Arcade game(s)" or in retrospect after a port that overshadows it "the arcade version," would make better logical sense. But what do I know. I'm a stupid old man who doesn't understand the highly intellectual "Internets" on the computers. I'm going to go get in my garage and drive to the gas station to get some gas station now. Edit: 0:58 Yes, in fact many. Including the one you have pictured as you say this. These didn't disintegrate in 1970. Heh.
