Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World - REVIEW | musical at Theatre Royal, Stratford East

OHMYGOD HEY!
Last week I was thrilled to be invited to review a new musical I've had my eye on for a little while: FANTASTICALLY GREAT WOMEN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD!
The show, which is based on the popular book by Kate Pankhurst, is currently playing at Theatre Royal Stratford East before it heads to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Check out today's new video for my full review of the show in which I discuss its score, its cast (which includes Renée Lamb, Christina Modestou and Kirstie Skivvington) and its similarities to the global hit, Six.

I massively enjoyed this show when I saw it (not long after the news of Roe V Wade) and, in the moment Emmeline Pankhurst does her speech about how even today women are still being forced to fight for equality, the show had to stop for about a minute as the audience started this really passionate, furious clap which I think was so important and special. I think it will have sparked so many important discussions.

Omg I just saw this tonight and was hoping you’d reviewed it and here you are 🤩 I really enjoyed it, the ending especially really touched me and sometimes even as an adult it really helps to hear some inspiration and feel connected to the world in a way only theatre really gives me. Christina Modestou was the standout for me but the whole cast was great. I did note and wish there had been some LGBTQIA+ mention as well though but it’s good to hear that this community is represented in the creative team. One strange thing that happened though was when I left the auditorium after the show, in the corridor by the merch stand was a white male teacher absolutely ranting and screaming at some of his students (young girls of colour) about what a nuisance they’d been and how much trouble they were, just a full on ugly public scolding. It was quite shocking to be honest - like did he even watch the show he’d just seen at all?!? If I was a bolder person I would have loved to point out the irony…

Didn’t know you were a teacher. Am also a teacher and was cackling at the description of the opening number! (Also, yes, I am exhausted. All the time. Enthusiasm comes and goes. Exhaustion is always there. Sounds pretty realistic to me!)

I had a blast listening to the cast album, as a young woman who didn’t necessarily have as much of this media to inspire me growing up. Rosa’s lullaby is absolutely beautiful, and deeds not words really is something else, honestly. It’s so poignant in the world we’re living in today and I really hope I get to go see the show!

I wrote an article on this show yesterday and saw you had posted your video but decided to wait until my piece was done before I watched you review so as not to create a bias for myself but I must say almost every single point you brought up I brought up too 😂 Also depending on when you saw the show you might not have had the line change at the end of Deeds Not Words referencing the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I can tell you the whole house clapped when Kirstie said it, it was so meaningful and powerful

I saw it in Oxford at the end of May and found it very enjoyable, the cast were great. The songs are really catchy and I would say there are bits in it which feel practically copied and pasted from Six, especially one part of the first song. But parts felt a bit long I would say.

Loved the show, but went to a weekday matinee and the audience was 95% school trips (apparently the book is taught in a lot of schools?) It was nice to see a ton of kids discover they love musical theatre for the first time, but also, if you go during the day… be prepared to put up with a disruptive audience with minimal supervision.

The vocals I've heard from select songs have been outstanding. Just overall the show seems very juvenile and not in a way I like....almost feels like an afterschool special that we'd watch during homeroom or a school assembly. Maybe it was the color coding outfits? I feel horrible saying that and I'd be interested to see what changes are made! And there's no doubt the cast is talented! Speaking of intersectional feminism; I would've loved to see them include disabled women in this musical. Once again a perfect opportunity that was missed it seems.

They did include at least one disabled woman, but didn't mention it, as far as I can tell. I haven't seen the show, but the West End Live performance was a song about Frida Kahlo that didn't mention her disability at all -- it was all just like, "Yay, colors!" There was a line that was something like, "I don't need feet when I have wings to fly" that really made me like, "WTF?" I haven't been able to find a ton of information about the scene with Anne Frank, but from the little bit that I have seen, it seems like it's reinforcing a lot of the attitudes that Holocaust education has been trying to get away from in recent years. I don't really want to make a judgment about it before seeing it, but the promotional materials and songs that I've seen and heard so far are sending up a lot of red flags for me.

@@callalily3994 oh that’s too bad! It would’ve been so such an easy thing to include Frida’s disability 😭 and that’s one of my favorite quotes by her but so weird without context of her being disabled. And yikes yeah, there’s a lot of areas that this show needs to be careful about touching on I think the idea for the show is clever (giving me Magic Tree House and I mean that in a good way) and could be great.

@@danaslitlist1 This is the Frida Kahlo song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eJ12o62Oktq5pqQ.html I can see some ways to frame the song that I think would be OK, but I'm feeling like I'm thinking, "Well, maybe this song seems problematic on its own, but it might be OK within the context of the show?" for a whole lot of the songs that I've heard, which isn't giving me a lot of confidence in the show.

Go and see the show, it is the best way to find out how they portray the various women, rather than just listening to the soundtrack. Remember, in a show more can be explained, which is what they do re. Frida.

So I know everyone in these comments is sweet and supportive and I kinda hate being "that" person, but . . . Ick. This seriously reminds me of when theater groups would visit our elementary school and grace the student body with a big dollop of infotainment. ( See "Legs Akimbo" League of Gentlemen.) No doubt this soon show will be foisted upon children throughout the country, which is honestly a shame because kids are capable of appreciating art on a much higher level. Not only condescending but clearly a rather cynical attempt at riding the coattails of Six. So yeah, this one's a "no thanks" for me.

The title alone is enough to put me off. Tell interesting stories about interesting people in a cool show, great! But this gives me vibes of the ever increasing trend of forcing feminism down your throat and the insulting attitude that women have to be told we are strong (because apparently we're too weak and dumb to already know that). I hope I'm wrong, but yeah... Ick
