Fantastic Winter Camping An Hour Outside Phoenix, Arizona

We've gotten our best campsite recommendations from fellow campers and this one is awesome! Tortilla Flat is a tiny Western looking spot on the road with a population of six. There you will find a saloon, restaurant, gift shop, ice cream shop, but not not many groceries so bring them with you because Apache Junction is 17 miles away. Across the road is the entrance to Tortilla campground. In this video, you will discover the beauty that surrounds these campsites and makes this a very special place. Join us! ~ Trish Selgrath and Randy

We just stayed there in spot 59 (it’s one you can reserve ahead of time) because of your KZread! It’s gorgeous and so clean and well maintained. Will be going back in about a month.

Oh, I know! We're from the Atlanta area. It's the west that is just now getting them. California has a lot and a few in Arizona, but they are expanding rapidly. Just saw the nicest one ever in Buckeye, outside Phoenix. Thanks for watching! Trish

We took our chances. It was early in the season so there were lots of open spaces. The camp host said it does get busy during peak which is Winter. Thanks for the question.

Are there length and weight restrictions? I see the bridge has a 14 ft. height limit.

The width and length should be fine. I didn't see a weight listed. It is a curvy road so take it slow. You should be fine in the campground. It's so beautiful there. Enjoy! ~ Trisha

I wasn't aware that there are camping restrictions that say you can't. That's basically what we're doing in our van. We have boondocked with people who camp in their cars but not at this campground. If these rules exist, one hack would be to get a small, cheap (even used) tent and set it up. Put a rock in it to hold it down. Oh, I do remember hanging a camping hammock. You can get one for $30. If they ask why you're not sleeping in it (I can't imagine they would), you could say that the coyotes, snakes, etc. scared you! ~Trisha

thousands of coyotes-- snakes are there out in the rocks not usually in camp-- there is a nice mtn there to climb- by hiking-- snakes may be off the side of that ttrail----- i camp in flagstaff- never saw a snake for years- same site- down to teh square inch-- no snakes until 1 year i stepped right into strike distance for a baby rattler--- just as potent as the momma- but way more pissed off after i moved it and gave the ravens a dinner---- the ravens and i have become friends.... snakes are good wampum
