Fanny Packs? A thing of the past or ultralight gear for the future?
Hey there. You may have noticed that we changed the name of the channel to The Ultralight Mindset. You'll still find tons of videos related to ultralight backpacking, hiking, and outdoor content, but also tips on living with less (ultralight) in your day to day life.

Why should you carry a piece of gear that clearly should have died in the late 80's?
Here's a few good reasons:
1. Easy access to frequently used items like phone, camera, lip balm, sunscreen, compass, sunglasses, etc.
2. Great alternative to a traditional hip belt. Detachable options mean increased versatility.
3. Safe place to store electronics, cash, car key, and wallet. Not waterproof, but HIGHLY water resistant.
4. Perfect for carrying items while in town.
5. You'll look cool. Everybody knows the eighties are making a comeback. So rock some crazy bright colors, flip up that color, and sport those super short running shorts.
If that sounds like your Jam, there are plenty of great cottage companies making fanny packs of all shapes, sizes, and colors.
So, where do stand?

I love them for the versatility. I have an awesome one from Red Paw Packs and I use it as a chest pack, a sling bag, a fanny pack, and a hip belt. I carries a water bottle on top, tons of stuff inside, has a pocket on the front that holds a note 9 phone, two smaller side pockets for keys, knife, lip balm and a stretch holder underneath for an ultralight jacket. Love it !!!! Matt custom makes these and he's a great guy.

I bought a liteAF fanny pack too and wear it around town. I love the super light weight of both fanny packs and having my hands free and nothing hanging on shoulder is great.
I became a fanny pack believer pretty quickly. My ditty and FAK is now split. All of the regularly used items are in the fanny pack, always on me, and the just in case stuff inside the pack. It’s so nice having that stuff always at hand. Then the phone and charger get added to it at night and the whole thing goes into the quilt to stay warm or next to my head for easy access in the shelter.

I have been using the Zpacks Chest Pouch in exactly this way for a few years and like that it can attach to both shoulder straps as well or used as Fanny or shoulder bag when in town. Keeps IDs, valuables, meds, and electronics all in one spot and easy to detach and leave my backpack at the door.

Sounds like a good setup.
I designed and made myself a pack with universal fanny pack attachments so all fanny packs work as a hipbelt without the need to change straps. It's worked well for a few hundred miles, so I'll be posting about it soon. Hopefully you'll be using it in the future

They offer options. For example, a place to keep your essential items (knife, light, map, phone, snack) so they are always with you, even when you remove your pack. And they can move with you from activity-to-activity. Mine comes with me hiking, cycling and skiing. I rather have that stuff in a pouch, dorky as it may look, than shoved into my pockets or stashed somewhere I cannot get to quickly.

Oh man. You would fit right in with Fluorescent Green!
I like to keep my electronics bag, wallet, keys, and a couple candy bars, in my thru-pack UL Summit Bum. I really like having the electronics bag in their because it is one of the heavier items in my pack and that put's the weight 100% on my hips.

I have a few which I have used for years when they were actually meant to be on your Fanny. These days I love a small one in front with a backpack.
I carry two fanny packs: my left pocket and right pocket. I won't hate on fanny packs, but a duplicate item for me especially with zippered shorts pockets, hip belt pockets, shoulder strap pockets, water bottle side pockets... I last used one in the late 80s through Europe, but mostly then to avoid pickpockets. Hey HYOH though. Probably helpful for larger cameras if you don't have a shoulder strap clip.
