The only string quartet be Fanny Hensel is one of our favorite works because in under 20 minutes she creates a musical epic with all the facets of human emotions. Fanny Hensel conveys the aura of Beethoven , but without competing in either classical form or with her brother Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdi. This piece lacks a main movement in a sonata form and as the writer Gunter Marx described it as a “Fantasy piece” in the romantic sense: “The first movement of the quartet “Adagio ma non troppo” resembles a fantasy both formally as well as harmonically; less like a structure and more organic. Allegretto (c-minor) is similar to a scherzo. A Fugato takes a place of a trio as it harmonically modulates into a f-sharp minor in a very agitated manner. The opening scherzo motive repeats multiple times before reaching a greatly reduced Da Capo. The Romance (g-minor) is not content with variously illuminating the beautiful songlike theme but, most romantically narrates an entire drama. In the last uplifting movement, you can feel that entire time the Rondo theme appears in more increasingly altered form. “ (Gunter Marx). 🇩🇪DE Das einzige Streichquartett von Fanny Hensel ist eines unserer Lieblingswerke. Sie erschafft in knapp 20 Minuten einen musikalischen Epos mit allen Facetten der menschlichen Gefühlswelt. Fanny Hensel vermittelt in diesem Meisterwerk viel von der Aura des späten Beethoven, von der sie so fasziniert war, ohne aber mit den Formen des Klassikers oder ihres Bruders in Konkurrenz zu treten. Denn ihr Quartett verzichtet auf einen Hauptsatz in Sonatenform und erscheint formal eher - wie es der Herausgeber des Werkes, Günter Marx, formulierte - als eine Zusammenstellung von „Fantasie-stücken“ im romantischen Sinne:
„Der erste Satz des Quartetts, Adagio ma non troppo, ist wie eine Fantasie, formal wie harmonisch weniger Bauwerk als organisch gewachsenes Gewebe. Das Allegretto (c-Moll) ist einem Scherzo ähnlich. An die Stelle eine Trios tritt ein Fugato, das harmonisch sehr bewegt bis nach fis-Moll moduliert und immer wieder das Scherzo-Anfangsmotiv mit einbezieht, bevor es zu einem stark verkürzten Da Capo kommt. Die Romanze (g-Moll) begnügt sich nicht mit der unterschiedlichen Ausleuchtung des schönen liedhaften Themas, sondern erzählt, höchst romantisch, ein ganzes Drama. Im übermütigen letzten Satz fällt auf, daß das Rondothema jedesmal in zunehmend abgewandelter Form erscheint.“ (Günter Marx).
