Phil Vischer tried to reanimate the third VeggieTales episode: Are You My Neighbor? (including The Hairbrush Song) in 1998 because there were some things in the OG episode he wanted to update. But with how much work he had towards making Jonah, the project was dropped. The only evidence of it ever happening was the audio of the opening countertop sequence which can be found in certain easter eggs and behind the scenes of VeggieTales DVD's.

Not for me. I remember 90s VeggieTales having a very distinct style of animation. They emphasized key frames and squashing and stretching the characters for comedic effect. The animators instead chose to replicate the less exaggerated and, imo, boring modern style. It is still impressive how well they were able to do it.

Another thing I'm realizing about veggietales (rack shack Benny and the Esther episode in particular) - I think they had a big role in instilling virtues of integrity and resistance to "dumb fads." Not just fashion trends etc but also primed me to more easily identify mob-mentality, view it with a more skeptical eye. this has been valuable in so many areas of my life, ranging from career/fiscal calculations to political discourse to personal authenticity. (Ironically it might've contributed to my current stance on US Christianity, which is "this needs fixing," at best.)

29:33 I honestly _really_ appreciate the changes made to Mr. Nezzer in this sequence. It makes him seem like much less of a mad man when in the original he comes across more like a cackling villain who was rooting for their deaths, then just has a complete 180 turn in the end. But here, he's quiet, he almost seems disappointed as he goes to walk away from the furnace without a word. Then when the light of God beams down to protect them, he looks _terrified,_ as if he knows he just upset the big guy in the sky and it gives him something of a reality check, his expressions when they come out of the furnace being filled with fear, apprehension, and deep regret. It really helps sell Mr. Nezzer's turn much better than the original in my book, and I really like it. Overall this is fantastic work remastering the original, but I felt the need to praise this part specifically.

  • @BenjaMage

On top of that, imo, there's honestly something colder about Nezzer walking away without a word instead of his mad cackle. It makes him come off as apathetic, like he's reached the absolute lowest he could get as a person (just in time for God to give him the wake-up call he needed).

I’m floored. Where do I even start with this? Like, talk about an incredibly satisfying reimagining of the original film, shot-for-shot, my gosh.. The subtlety in expressiveness, the pacing, the new life breathed into the characters (even background characters!), the friggin’ SCORE man! It’s like, so distinctively Gourd, and yet still stays gauged in the headspace of, yea, this is totally how classic era Big Idea would have done it. Like, it isn’t just an homage, It’s practically a spiritual successor. I found myself backing up and rewatching frames, geeking out about all the references, recognizing all the soundbites and where they originated, all the nods to past episodes. But also, being legitimately struck by how even the TONE of the scenes, by way of tweaking a characters expression from the original, or rearranging the shots, or reassigning set pieces, or even sometimes overtly NOT following the format of the original storyboard to elicit a different mood entirely. I think that might have been what I enjoyed most about this; I’m watching a practically shot-for-shot remake of ‘Rack, Shack and Benny’, and yet, this is still very much NOT ‘Rack, Shack and Benny’. It didn’t need to be, and you can tell it didn’t really want to be either. Y’all just leaned into that! I found that very cool and very endearing. Gourd, dude, this was really something special. You deserve all of the incredible feedback, and I am legitimately, deeply impressed. Same goes for 321Blender, and Crystal, and WoopDoo, and Dark Lord, and well, everybody! Yeah, and in the original version of the episode, the part where Benny (Larry the Cucumber) sings the line “We used to be so happy.” I was like “But you all seem happy when you sang that, so it kinda takes the realism out of the environment.” But here when he sang that line, even with Rack and Shack sang “We used to laugh and run” “But there’s no time to play ‘cause we gotta work all day and it isn’t very fun”, even when it comes to the animation, they sound very miserable, which fits the vibe of the moment. I was like “YES!! Now, I’m invested! They should feel miserable, as mean and cruel as it sounds, but when they sound so annoyed and miserable, they should have that same energy and not be happy about it”. Does that make sense?

No one (from what I'm seeing) is talking about the BRILLIANCE of having 19:14 scene change from a huge outside auditorium to an inside break-room type setting! I understand having it outside, to show the sheer scale of the bunny, but moving it inside makes it a LOT easier for Lundt to pick out the few workers that aren't following the norm. Plus having the guards bring them to the front, rather than them being allowed to stay in the back of the pack, makes it feel like Nezzer has much more control of the situation (with the added LOVE of the 'guards' being more executives that you've already seen in the previous scene). This was an amazing re-mold and I hope y'all make more (if the inspiration strikes)!

Also, I noticed some references throughout RS&B Remolded: 1- a pea falling from Laura’s delivery car is a reference to the same pea falling from the tree house in “Madam Blueberry”, and his scream sounds just like the one from “King George and the Ducky”. 2- in the Dance of the Cucumber silly song, Junior and his dad were wearing exactly the same shirts as they did in “Jonah: a VeggieTales movie”. 3- speaking of that movie, towards the end of this remolded episode, another pea was shown exiting the elevator, and that pea is one of them from Ninevah and also spoke exactly like Khalil the Caterpillar, also another reference from the movie. 4- a few of those standing posts in the middle of the factory, though with the colors altered, are exactly the same ones from King Darius’ castle in “Daniel and the Lion’s Den”. 5- the back of Mr. Nezzer’s office looks almost identical to King Xerxes’ throne room from “Esther the girl who became Queen”. 6- Blind Lemon from “Duke and the Great Pie War” was also featured as a music player for Mr. Nezzer and his songs. 7- when Rack Shack & Benny stepped out of the furnace, a piece of music score is played in background with them doing so, and that piece of music score is exactly the same one as played in the end of “Larry-Boy & The Fib From Outer Space”. Phew! That was a lot of references to disclose! Lol

The remake music adds more depth into the tone to make it more engaging. I also found the animation fantastic, it resembles the 2000s style but with more depth and details with the characters designs and the background elements too. Almost like it was made for a theatrical movie. I really love the fact that the factory diversifies its cast where it’s more than just peas as the employees. My favorite background character you added was the Chill Executive. For the sake of the comment, I'll call her "Chill" . We first see her at 14:49. Chewing gum. She pops her bubble in benny's ear as she continues to listen in. It is a subtle way to get the sharp unfeeling mood of the Board compared to the ambitious Nezzar 15:17 Benny Blocks the view of the Chill Executive behind him and they have a brief interaction. Benny: "That's... the bunny?" Chill: "Hey, Stretch, do you mind?" Benny: "Oh! uh... Sorry. " Chill: "Thank you." 32:37 Chill makes an appearance in the back still keeping in character. Cool as a benny (Cucumber) but noticeably loosened up more. Almost like her expression reads: "Finally, a little light in this place." Other note: It wouldn't feel right having chill antagonize the protagonists directly like seize them, chase Laura, etc. But the indirect ways with Benny were perfect! Chill was the most laid back of the board, always observing and conserving energy. Her contributions to the story were indirect, but it felt natural, like someone under the rule of a king making their own conclusions but kind of like an Anti-Laura, playing it cool, and spectating. Almost like she got enough information about Benny and the rest to make some interactions. If Cell phones were a thing in this story, 100% she'd be texting. LOL. Just one example of how layered a background character can be! Well done Gourd!

This is SO good. I loved the little and big changes you made, from the style of the setting and design to re-timing some of the jokes w/ dialogue. This is absolutely incredible and honestly I think this is closer to what this episode would have been if it were made in 2024 instead of 1995 (which I guess is what it is, but I mean like..... with the OG team and stuff). You guys must have worked so hard on this and it paid off spectacularly!!!

Woah. The furnace scene has like 20x more menace in what was already a pretty dark moment for a kids show. Making the cart dropping a deliberate choice and not an accident (like in the original where Laura unplugs the machine but the pin just falls out anyway) contributes to that massivley, along with removing Nezzar's evil laugh and replacing it with a cold hard stare. Well done!

Every bit of this is outstanding, but I especially want to point out the audio. It sounds super clean, not a hint of the original graininess. The added echo when characters talk in the factory and the background noise were fantastic additions. Do I even need to mention the music? The renditions of the original songs are so amazingly done, and the usage of motifs in the background music was perfectly done throughout. As someone who’s learned to appreciate good sound design, this is a treat for the ears. Seriously, this is phenomenal work. A fantastic “testament” to the best Christian media series ever made.

The amount of added details in this! The background instrumentals that give this a much needed cinematic feel, the added in pauses like when the boys get dropped into the furnace! Mr. Nezzer doesn't even do his maniacal laugh at their demise! He just walks away like he just threw out the trash, that was so much more chilling! I just... Can hardly even begin to speak about how much love and care was put into this! By far my favorite detail is Shack's cute little dance at 31:29 🥰😍 He puts so much *SWAG* into it, just adore it!

when i think of a VeggieTales PASSION project, this is exactly what I think of. You captured exactly what a fan of this amazing franchise would want to see perfectly, from the Take 38 remake, the AMAZING remake of the theme song and Silly Song, the score that I prayyy Kurt Heineke gets to hear, the movements, animation, lighting, sound design, and all that is so great about this iconic franchise and episode. The score that played throughout , was so different, but so full, and so VeggieTales at the same time. This project showed an understanding of VeggieTales to a T, which only makes Phil Vischer’s mark of approval, that much more satisfying to see! Perfect episode choice, and perfect but original remake, excellent work!!! Ohhhhh what you all could do to “Fib from Outer Space”😮‍💨. But please rest now, enjoy the fruits of your labors, and take time for yourselves…but please make another one 😂. Congrats to this amazing team for this amazing re-mold! Definitely a constant rewatch!

just going back after my third rewatch, and noticing the small details that make this project so good, like in the theme song, as it goes on we see Larry get progressively more and more tired as the song goes on, bro has been doing this for 30 years, he’s tired 😂. But saving all the rambling about the references, foreshadowing, the sound design of the countertop scenes, the new altered voice direction of the whole film, and just…long story short: you guys cooked.

This is one of the most incredible feats of animation I’ve ever seen from a fan community, hands down. The remastered music and new ambient background tracks. The quality of how well it matches the VeggieTales style. The use of all the side characters. The seamless integration of old voicelines and new background actors. Nezzer’s outfit in the Bunny Song. The sheer feeling of seeing George updated in the newer animation. The new visual and sound based gags (that pea yelling is like the Wilhelm Scream of the Veggeiverse) and so much more just bring this together so perfectly. Bravo, to everyone involved in this project. Bravo.

Well, there’s a slight difference between the two. When you wear an oven mitt on your head, the sleeve that you insert your hand into is longer so that way you don’t see anything. But a shoe, if it’s clean and disinfected, is different. It’s kinda like a hat. Sure you put your crusty feet in it normally, but Larry wears a shoe in the “Love Your Neighbor” episode like it’s a hat to him. He can see more clearly wearing a shoe on his head than an oven mitt. See what I mean?

Finished my second full watch, here for another. Wow. Most incredible piece of content I’ve ever seen come out of this fandom; easily the best thing I’ve seen all year. Seriously, I would venture to say Gourd is a genius. The direction was incredible- he had a clear vision, stuck it through and made a timeless piece of art. I was lucky enough to see it in progress over the past year or two- the boards, the concept art- even the unfinished animation was all amazing!!! And now it’s complete. Shoutout to all the animators who poured time into this project. The music is beyond stellar, can’t wait to listen back to them again. My favorite moments were Junior’s dance in ‘Stand’ and the photo gag in the silly song. Honored to have been able to do the Percy/other vegetable moaning noises. Seeing my name in the credits made my heart jump. I could type another paragraph about all the foreshadowing, references and details, but I won’t. Love you all, this is incredible. Thank you Gourd. I really, REALLY love how you guys gave the whole thing a fresh mid 2000's look to the whole episode, with a fuller soundtrack, background details, extras etc, My only real complaint is that I feel like some of the eye expressions were lost in the transition (or rather transformation), especially with Bob. The whole "Sitting vs Standing" gag doesn't land so well without Bob's more cartoony movement and expressions. The tabletop scenes also feel more like Bob is more concerned with Larry than being annoyed at him. That said you did make up some of it with how Bob acted in the Silly Song portion; whoever animated the part with Bob collar-grabbing Larry without hands deserves... Well they did it for free, so I can't say a raise, but you get the idea. Hopefully you guys see this comment before this video gets COPPAed. But I wish to congratulate everyone involved on a job well done and advice on if you decide to make another remake in the future. (Dave and the Giant Pickle maybe?)

16:22 this scene always makes me laugh because of what Big idea studios did. The original lyric was “I don’t love my mom or my dad just the bunny,” but it had to be changed because angry parents wrote to Big Idea about their kids singing it all the time and demanded a change. Of course, they listened and when they rereleased the DVD version it became, “I don’t love my soup or my bread, just the bunny.”

To be fair though, parents wouldn’t have had a problem with the original song if their kids didn’t sing it in public places. It’d be one thing if my kid were singing it at home, but in a public place like a grocery store as one of the parents’ kid did or heck, even in school or church, it’s a much more serious issue.

Another line that was changed for the same reason was "I won't eat no beans, and I won't eat tofu" which was originally "I won't go to church, and I won't go to school." This is why, in the original animation, the three protagonist's jaws fall to the floor in shock and disbelief when that line is said. Such a reaction would be considered a bit much with the revised line, but quite understandable with the original.

I’ll try and keep this rambling brief because I will be here so long if I do so but this is easily one of the best projects to come out this year. There’s so much this project does to not only actively better the original but also help recontextualize certain characters and moments. The whole Think of Me scene comes to mind as an example as it makes me cry so hard. That was made far more tender and just adorable thanks to not only the new arrangement but the setting/ new character animations/costumes. Speaking of which, those and everything with the timing/ restructuring of everything make me so happy as it makes every scene all the more special, it breathes live into previously flat or standard moments. The score is no joke one of the best I’ve heard from a fan project Id say ever, all the leitmotifs really help tie it all together. In general the sound editing was ON POINT. Everyone involved with this did a fantastic job and it absolutely shows. This feels like such a love letter to not only the original episode but to the franchise as a whole. Will be endlessly rewatching this for years to come!!
