I took classes from Baba olantunji years ago when I worked at Omega. The Fanga song and rhythm is ingrained in my soul! It's so cool that Baba's style has been worked up to this awesome level these guys are playing!
You ever notice how hard it is to put a djembe down after you pick it up? This is why.
Yes Amadou & Weedie!!!
Respect From Cameroon y'all

These guys are so much inspiration! I am waiting for my first Djembe drum to arrive and I can't wait to get starting practicing! I discovered this music about 10 years ago, thought it was interesting. This past weekend I happen to be at a party where there was a small group playing Brazilian music and spent some time after talking to the guy who played the conga drums. I mentioned the African drums that I liked it. He mentioned the Djembe and these gentleman on KZread as something I may want to look into. I am hooked.

Excellent djembe drumming. I teach a World Percussion class at the middle school level and my students are learning Fanga. Your drumming is inspirational and it give my students ideas for improvisation. My students are also learning the variety of sounds that can be produced on the djembe. Thanks for sharing this beautiful gift of music.

amazing and respect!
Weedie its me YB come back to stl man!!!!
Great playing! But worth mentioning, the song/dance is not a traditional west-african song, but a mishmash of different african languages and liberian dance moves, composed by the late great LaRocque Bey. And the rhythms are mostly from Yoruba people? :)
Hey weedie this Shemurah

I love it! What do the words mean?
@nechesh
Жыл бұрын
It is a welcoming song/rhythm/dance. The words were composed by LaRocque Bey in the mid 20th century and it is mostly Yoruban i believe. Funga Alafia basically means "welcome" or "peace be with you". Ashé (Ase) is a bit more complicated. In the Ifá religion it is an essential essence, the spirit that runs through all things. But in this context it's meaning is more an affirmation, sort of like saying "amen".

@@nechesh I have heard the Ashe means the power to create.
