Fan mystery: Your theories TESTED!

In the last video, I asked you all a simple question: why does a fan blow over when I put my hand in front of it? It seems simple, but became sciencey-wierd and complex.     Ok, so I’m 4wks behind on this one, been busy installing summertime high-efficiency a/c’s and doing warranty repairs. But I just commented on the previous fan mystery thrust video, and told you it was a pressure pocket due to collected velocity which is Bernoulli in action. Fun stuff Alex.

    Ok so after blind-commenting on the last one before reading comments (still havent) and then watching this one i feel partial vindication. So yes we are dealing with ground effect. The fan shroud of the case fan effectively imparts 'ground effect' on each individual airfoil or impeller blade. However, the whole assemblage, a circular collection of wings, creates a donut shaped vortex from the outlet all the way back around to the inlet, and the short housing of the case fan did not address that aspect particularly well, not needing to because such a fan would usually be mounted to a panel which would interrupt that recirculation, albeit not at the ideal point in the flow path to increase axial thrust. In comes the bilge fan which has a very LONG shroud which DOES interrupt the donut at a more ideal point. This makes the thrust less susceptible to the hand near the output because there is very little 'recirculating' flow to interrupt, so little efficiency left to be gained from 'ground effect'.

    Ok so i was sorta right the last time, i thought your hand was on the intake side of the fan but what i said kinda was the same thing as pressure, i was just talking about negative pressure 😂

    1:21 It does go up for a second, I don't know why. Really? About it for a second You've introduced something for the air to push against, and for a brief moment it does. But because of the curve of the bowl that wind is directed right back down. So you basically have three streams of air one down one up one down and moving air is less dense. So I believe you have merely created a low pressure zone above your scale and all of the atmosphere under the scale and the object is now pressing upwards against the low pressure zone I could be totally wrong. I'm not a physics guy, that's just what it seems like to me, like the Benelli principal when you go to a science museum and you see the beach ball balancing on the column of air and it's because the moving air is less dense so the pressure of the atmosphere holds it in place

    That could very likely be right with the bigger bowl. If I had the resources to introduce smoke into the stream I could shoot a slo-mo video and maybe that would tell us for sure. But right now I'm packing things up for the next trip down to Alex Labs and I'm finding all kinds of fun little things on and around the desk where I shoot my "talking hands" videos.

    You're sucking air and compression is occurring through the path where your hand is, is causes the fan to push slightly. It's a positive pressure zone. I explained this on your last video... There's no gains for air flow...

    I wouldn't expect gains in air flow. But yeah, it's basically just a positive pressure zone (mostly - a little ground effect too)

    So when does someone get a couple of plaid motors , drive a big whipple , on top fuel , could add 700 plus to it whipple less drag /heat than current .

    The added weight (including batteries) would probably make it not practical. Even though I have a particular fondness for positive displacement superchargers, I went with a centrifugal because it was better suited to smaller, faster motors (which are lighter for the same power output).

    @@AlexLTDLX A friend has a Maxxair on his van and it can pull air in or exhaust and automatically will close if it rains. He camps in it and says he does not have to use the ac unless it's really hot.

    why do you say ground effect has anything to do with tip vortex thingys, its only about the distance to the ground, not the vortex formation
