Fan Mail: To try fix a Asus Maximus VII Ranger Motherboard - 345

Ғылым және технология

I do love getting mail, and especially "Fan Mail" I had a box from an Asus Maximus VII Ranger Motherboard, sitting around in one of my videos, and Jacob from Australia saw that and asked if I was using that. I could tell him that I had gotten that mother board because it had bent CPU pins. And that I had tried to fix it , but did not have an CPU to Test it. Jacob offered to send me one,, and so he did! This one:

Is it possible to fix the same mobo that has been turned on without standoffs? My friend broke mine after getting a shot of it and i don't know if it can be fixed.

Thanks for making this video, Morten. That is a nice CPU. I am sorry that your board was defective. If anyone knows whether or not a socket replacement is possible, it would be Louis Rossman. His KZread channel shows the prospects of his business in Manhattan where he does low-level motherboard repairs. Apple logic boards seem to be a general specialty for him, but he knows what he is talking about. You might be able to find something on his channel that would be helpful in this scenario.

Thank you Morten for a usually superb video. A sort of silly question, are using ECC memory for this mobo? ECC could work in Servers and workstations. Also I had a socket pin problem in CPU 1 of an hp motherboard, needless to say I had to buy a newmotherboard just because of it, isnt that a pitty? CPU2 cant work without CPU1 being placed so no room for maneuvering. But I enjoyed playing with dismantling this server, anyway :)

There is a memok button on the board don't know how many people know it u need to press it right after u press the start button the error 55 is very common in Asus boards it can also b die to cpu not seated properly or due to cooler not installed correctly I had the same issue got it working after sometime u could have also tried clear cmos but I think u took apart this board

I think this is not memory fault, it's cpu socket pin fault, it might who link with cpu and memory slots, and system board led showing that RAM not working because hasn't link with it and doesn't signal for ram slot.

Great video. I wish I could get a $120 USD CPU for free! Anyway I wanted to mention there are a few Xeons that do come equipped with internal graphics at least in the E3 series. In particular I have a hackintosh build with an E3-1246v3 where I use its onboard graphics. Also, with the intel stock heatsink/fan you shouldn't need to turn the knobs from their locked position to attach it to the motherboard. In fact, you want to have it in the locked position so that you hear the affirmative "click" or "snap" of the cooler locking into place when you push down on the knob.

The pin you're missing is a VSS according to page 112 on this spec sheet: www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/4th-gen-core-family-desktop-vol-1-datasheet.pdf You might be able to get away with it if you 'solder' pins b23 and c23 together, as they are both VSS. I'm not sure if it'll work and this is a fix on the CPU, which you may not want to ruin. You could look into placing a little bit of solder next to the B23 pin that connects to the B23 pin, which in turn makes contact with the c23 pad on the CPU. Not sure if it'll work and if my reasoning is right, but worth a try before reflowing a whole new socket right? I hope i got the orientation right, it could be the AV18 and AW18, those should not be connected together

+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) As far as I know, replacing a whole socket is quite difficult even with a proper equipment, which isn't cheap. And even if you managed to find a repair shop, which could do it, the price will be so high, it would be cheaper to buy a new board. IMHO, the board is worthless, unless you want to hang it on a wall as a decoration (I already have 15 boards hanging on there). And if you want to try to repair the board yourself, the only thing you can realistically do, is to try to bend the pins back to where they were with a needle, but the chances are low. Even I only have around 20% success rate with bent pins. Could be a cool video though... (Protip: It's easier to access the socket, if you remove the motherboard heatsink and the CPU retention bracket - the screw size should be a Torx bit, size 20) Great video BTW.

I'm afraid that it doesn't as easy as it looks on the video. I'm after training related to exacly that - reballing, reflow etc. And i know that it's very delivate process. I myself have hot air station but it's goot for smd chips not socket - it'd melt it not reball. That's why infrared is necesarry - infrared will touch only solder balls. After that you need to clean board, have right size solder balls and right matrix for socket to put 1150 balls into right places. But..cheapest infrared station is around 1000euro :( So at least for me is way too much even if i like do it for fun :)

wow, am i the only one that gets worried here? you have no connection to the cabinet, thats an accident waiting to happen, statics cause a lot of stuff to stop working, and you might not even note that your component is broken. plz do your self a favor and read up on it.... here is a little about it, but im not sure thats enough information. www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Computer_Science/static.asp also i would recommend using a Anti Static Wrist Straps befor picking up components, especially the CPU (remember to connect it to a grounded unit like a radiator.

This guy is kind of a noob when it comes to computers, but that is ok. We all were at some point. Right off the back dude, that motherboard is a high end so it is pretty new. So you should have known DDr3 and 4 are only acceptable as DDr2 and 1 is old, really old. I am glad you found out there was a broken pin and not waste any more time with it. As far as your question about replacing the socket, that can get expensive like $50-100 to fix if someone does it for you. It involves removing the entire socket and heating it and spreading special compound over the layer underneath the socket. Then putting the new one one. If it was an AMD processor, they are a lot easier as you could just put a piece of metal there and as long as it makes contact you're fine. Intel has put the pins on the board unlike AMD putting them on the processor. I wish Intel would make the pins on the processor instead of the motherboard. Then Intel really would be perfect, xd. Well except for the price... Nice video though.

HI I am not a gamer, so I do not care much for this kind of hardware, but I did think it would be fun to try to take out this socket, so I did : kzread.info/dash/bejne/epabtNRwmJDRmdI.html And I am warming up to try to put in a new one,,chances of that working are slim, But hopefully fun to try! :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
