I think the reason Bendy became so popular when it was released is that it scratched an itch for that kind of 1920s aesthetic, which wasn't really being done by anyone else at that time. Situation is, the game itself primarily doesn't have that aesthetic--it's mostly just the ephemera surrounding it, but the fans took what they could get, which is why you see fan works embracing the toon style a lot more. Cuphead, by contrast, embraces that same aesthetic fully, earnestly and joyfully, and that really changed the landscape. I don't think Bendy would become as popular for the same reasons if it were released today.
