This song kept me from ending my life. I had just gotten out of a bad relationship and the guy messed me up so bad, I felt like a worthless waste. The lyrics clicked with me and years later, Im watching this as my husband and our daughter play. It sounds cliche but MCR did save my life.

Same here. The first time i saw them play live at riot fest, i sobbed like a baby during famous last words. I’m so thankful that song kept me alive. “I’m not afraid to keep on living” is now tattooed across my chest.

okay this may seem a little far fetched but listen to one of my explanations: what if this song is the patient's girlfriend responding to the things he said in the rest of the album? like in the sharpest lives "now you can leave like the sane, abandon me" he sounds like he's trying to make her feel guilty, and "how could you cry for me??" "tell me I'm a bad, bad, bad man" but "without you is how I disappear" and "the hardest part of this is leaving you" he's sort of making her carry the weight of his sickness, his depression, his whole thing, and in famous last words she's saying, "well I know I can't make you stay" I understand you're sick and dying, and I feel for you, "but where's your heart" can't you see I'm suffering too? "so many bright lights... but can I speak... I'm incomplete" everything is about his suffering, but she supposedly loves him and is incomplete when he is suffering, or maybe she has her own problems and he's so focused on himself she never has a moment to speak about it, as well as "a love that's so demanding, I can't speak" he's asking so much of her, even if he doesn't MEAN to hurt her. then the chorus is saying I am not afraid to go on without you, if you stay I still care about you but I have to care for myself and you can't stop me. then the second verse "can you see my eyes are shining bright..." can you see that I am alive? because, I'm out here on the other side of a jet black hotel mirror- the patient being the mirror, or something, and she can't see herself through it because he is filling her every thought, "and I'm so weak" it is taking so much out of her (to focus on him). "these bright lights have always blinded me" could be referring to the hospital lights (her being constantly at his side, blinded by his issues), or any of the things mentioned in the above video. lastly, "I see you lying next to me" he's lying on his supposed death bed, "with words I thought I'd never speak" maybe what she's said in the rest of the song, like she never thought she'd have the nerve to put herself before him, or whatever, "awake and unafraid, asleep or dead" either she is awake, and not afraid, and he asleep, or maybe even dead (as I point out the obvious), or HE is awake, and she doesn't have to be afraid he is gone (you get the point). woah. okay, I hope someone actually had the patience to read through all that. if you have, what do you think? possible? plausible?

that's exactly what i was gonna say! i've always interpreted the bridge of this song to be from the girlfriend's point of view; seeing him on the table, is he asleep or is he dead? and so forth. continues the emotional turmoil that's not only goin on within the patient

here's a quick explanation of demolition lovers. my understanding is that the demo lovers are shot in "early sunsets...", and end up in the hospital in critical condition and probably in comas. the girl dies first and "cubicles" is the male demo lover realizing that he's all alone, stuck in a coma in a hospital. "demo lovers" is the male demo lover reflecting on the story and his regrets, wishing how his life with the female demo lover went down, or what he would do had they both survived "early sunsets...".

Completely my interpretation, but I guess I always thought of the black parade as being an album that seems like one of the themes is a downward spiral. I always think the part where he sings "I see you lying next to me, with words I thought I'd never speak. Awake and unafraid. Asleep or dead." It always sounded to me like it is someone whose problem is so close that it literally lies in bed with them. And he makes a choice to live instead of have that problem control him to his death.

My interpretation of the ending (in the context of the album) is the patient slipping in and out of consciousness. You can hear the “I am not afraid to keep on living” chant and the “asleep or dead” (mostly the dead part of that) in the background overpowering each other, just as his will to live and cancer are overpowering each other. And, since it ends with the “I am not afraid to keep on living” chant, I interpret that as him surviving.

So the meaning of this seems complicated and I used to sit there pondering it but I found out a couple years back that it's about Mikey leaving the band and Gerard not wanting him to go, Mikey was going through a lot of depression and addictions and it didn't receive as much as support and attention to the problem by the fans as Gerard got, but Famous Last Words was also written to comfort him in that, a LOT of people talk about listening to Famous Last Words in the comments of some of their sadder songs like Early Sunsets or Desert Song because of Gerard's message to Mikey and how if you know the song's true meaning, it's really comforting. The lyrics "asleep or dead" are also something a TON of people get confused about. It was written because My Chem stayed at the Parmour Mansion (Correct if I'm wrong about that name) and it was really haunted and with Mikey's sweet sweet luck, he got put in the most haunted room. He would get so uncomfortable at certain nights that Gerard would wake up to Mikey sleeping on the floor in his his room because he was so scared, and Gerard obviously knew he was asleep but he couldn't shake the feeling that he was dead, he looked dead. Hence "asleep or dead". Their song Sleep is also about that house. Frank and Gerard and maybe Mikey but we don't know, got horrible night terrors due to that house. It's also Gerard's favorite song off of Black Parade. So there yee go. Correct me if any of my info is off but that's what I've gathered.

The Black Parade is my favorite album of all time. I learned the lyrics and guitar almost all by heart at this point. The narrative starts at the end hence the first two song titles of the album. From there it goes through the whole “your life flashes before your eyes” and we see how the patient lived his life and when we get to famous last words its him saying he’s not afraid to continue living and fighting, but also giving encouragement to his loved ones if he does goes. That’s at least how I think of it.

It's nice to know and understand what the artist's main intentions and inspirations are... but we as the listener can interpret its meaning in various ways. Ultimately, it's up to us on how we want the song to mean to us and how it can make us feel. We can have aspects of the lyrics mean what they want for us with what's happening in our personal lives or trigger past memories. The backbeats and vibes of a song can make you feel certain emotions regardless of what the artist initially intended.

As someone who hasn’t gone super deep into MCR lyrics’ official meanings, I wasn’t aware of the story of the album, but I’m definitely going to listen again to this with this in mind! Also, while I think this is far from a viable interpretation, when I hear “I see you lying next to me, with words I thought I’d never speak.”, I think along the lines of this song’s motivational themes, with it being “I’m here with someone who loves me and I love them and I never thought I would say I love you but I am.” I guess that’s my inner optimist still present despite my pessimism! Great video!

Btw I think you are one if the best KZreadrs I love when you roast songs I think you should do a "Gucci gang is really deep" video where you take everything way to serious and make up symbolic meaning behind everything he says like maybe he is "expressing all the repetition in his own life" or something. I would love it if you could explain the meaning behind some 80s or 90s songs you could do like a series. But anyways thanks for making videos and keep up the awesome work.

i read somewhere (i may link source later) that the lines “i see you lying next to me/with words i thought i’d never speak/awake and unafraid/asleep or dead” are about how Mikey would get nightmares while staying at the Paramour Mansion and sleep in Gerard’s room, so Gerard wrote about seeing Mikey sleep next to him and those specific lines were his encouragement to Mikey during that time.

I just lve that you do deep research on the songs and even find out what the members of the bands and sonwriters had in mind while doing this. I can't think of the time you spend doing that!!! I love that you share your thoughts and leaving the person behind the screen thinks. Personally for me the song has this meaning. The patient is on the balcony and remembers all the time he spent with his girlfriend. how he told her, how she was next to him when he falls into depression, when she sleeps next to his (maybe hospital) bed... even some words exchanged between them are spoken in his flashbacks from the time she says she wants him in her life as long as she can, as he watches the sunset and gets the courage to fight and be happy with her for all that's left of his life.

The band stayed at the haunted Paramour Mansion during the recording of the Black Parade. Mikey got the most haunted room. He ended up staying with the band's lawyer. Weird things would happen in the place. Doors were slamming in Frank and Gerard's faces, Bob's bathtub filled up with water in the middle of the night, and the creepiest thing was that Mikey's room, the blue room, was lit only by a faint blue light. Gerard started having night terrors and used a recording device as a kind of self-therapy. You can hear some of the recordings in Sleep. I recommend the vocals only version. He didn't think he would wake up from the terrors (words i thought i'd never speak, awake and unafraid). Mikey went into manic depression (also know as bipolar disorder) from being stuck in some creepy room, not to mention the lack of air conditioning, heating, cell service, or TV. I think he may have relapsed into drugs and/or alcohol, but i'm not sure. He slept on Gerard's floor a few times (i see you lying next to me) because he couldn't handle being alone. Sometimes he would get so still that Gerard couldn't tell if he was asleep or dead. I think many of the lyrics in the song, including the first few, are Gerard telling Mikey that he's having problems too. Gerard was terrified, but Mikey almost went insane. Wow. Multiple triggering emo fanfic references. I digress. Gerard wanted to comfort Mikey, but he couldn't really do that when he needed comfort too. He's asking Mikey "i can't make you stay with me and help me through this, but where's your heart? There's nothing i can say to change the fact that you have issues, too, but where's your heart?". That sounded like a really interesting fanfic, but i assure you it's 100% real. Read about the Paramour. Pretty cool and heartbreaking story,

I generally rationalize Black Parade songs by imagining the story as a stage or film musical. Without in mind, I view this song as a duet between the Patient and his Lover. It kind of helps things make more sense.

In my interpretation, throughout the most of the album, he is on death's doorstep. He can see what his life could have been, and how disappointingly little he achieved. At this point, he promises to himself that he will survive, and improve his life.

I believe the bridge is a memory the patient is having while on his bed. "I see you lying next to me with words I thought I'd never speak" possibly implying that he's dreaming of a memory of him and his SO lying next to each other and he says "I love you" which he, for most of his life, thought he would ever say to anyone and that he is thankful for her for bringing that out in him.

I am almost sure that the "I see you lying net to me" part is about death as a person or a thing because it is so close he can practically see it and he probably like most of us never thought that he would be speaking (facing ) it

i think it suppose to essentialy be the climax of the patients inner fight he looked back on his life and has come to terms with it and his condition and from there the ending is abigous on wether the patient accepts death or decided to fight to keep living as seen with the lyrics "awake and unafraid, asleep or dead"

For me, I've always seen this as living on after losing someone. It's shitty because losing a loved one permeates everything. When my papa was dying from cancer it he was in so much pain and I felt selfish wishing he'd just wake up and be okay again. Towards the end he couldn't speak to us but he was welding in his sleep (he was a pipeline welder) and we'd catch mumbles every now and then. Watching hospice keep him "comfortable" was hard.
