I think the textbook thing is key though- you can learn what makes certain things sounds good on the guitar without knowing what notes you’re playing really. It just takes experience and alot of iteration- which all those guitar players definitely had. If your practice all the time and try your best to get better you’ll never suffer whichever path you take- but ignoring music theory isn’t helpful in itself

You can learn theory with out actually "learning theory" when you have played the guitar as much as they have you can easily find notes in the scale or progression without knowing the names or ever learning it formally. They know exactly where to go and when to go there just like someone with theory can. It is not outrageous to say they never learned it from a text book or from someone who taught them theory. They know what sounds in key and what sounds good because these guys play for 15 hours a day their whole life. Id say some picked up theory without "knowing" it and others just knew the basics.

I think there’s also a discernible difference between “this player never learned conventional music theory but developed personal methods for navigating the fretboard” and “I am proud of the fact that I willingly refuse to improve my understanding of music even if it would help me better communicate with band members and peers” And while it may be impressive that a self taught player created a method that worked for them personally, either they had to learn how to effectively communicate with their members, or they’re probably a player that wasn’t very enjoyable to work with. Like James Brown was amazing, but I would NEVER want to work for that dude. He pretty much spoke gibberish and had to rely on the competency of the players to make up for it. If you want to be that person, by all means, but people probably won’t respect you.

Puts a different light on EVH claiming he had show Michael Anthony what to play. He said it to disparage MA’s skill when the reality was, EVH lacked the musical knowledge to communicate his ideas to the rest of the band. So, he got impatient and just told MA the root fret numbers when working on a new tune. Says more about EVH’s lack of ability to communicate as a musician and a person than anything.

@@refusetoshower definitely. As an instructor, I’ve learned that being a good player doesn’t necessarily translate into being a good teacher. It’s one thing to internalize a concept in a personal way, and it’s another thing to be able to communicate that concept externally in a way that makes sense to everyone. Theory helps standardize that process, but ultimately it requires a good level of understanding to begin with and the ability to gauge what another person already understands and doesn’t.

@@shinzontheta Yeah, i feel like people get this idea that players that emphasize theory don’t care about obtaining a good ear, but really I think everyone understands that it is a necessary thing. Theory isn’t about replacing ear training, it’s just more about informing a player what exactly to listen to. Players with good ears will make things sound coherent with or without theory, but I think everyone’s brain is different and not everyone has that intuition that guys like Wes Montgomery or the Beatles had.

If you're a prodigy like him, then you don't "need" to learn music theory. You simply end up figuring out what it is instinctively while playing and experimenting. It's like riding a bike. You don't know the actual physics and math behind how and why you're maintaining your balance, but you still know how to.

Those musicians definitely have something like perfect pitch. They naturally understand what clashes and what to do and what not to do. Some people are just lucky enough to be born with it but you can learn it and you should

I’ve been playing Tuba for 5 years and I got my first bass last year. I thought that I needed to learn music theory on my bass but I realized I spent years learning it at school, on my tuba. So I was basically all good to go, and i’m still playing bass.👍

I thought I would never learn music theory. But the more I absorb guitar content like this, practice, and visualize the fretboard, I've been picking it up naturally. If you want to improve, theory is inevitable. Even if you don't learn it on paper, you will know it in your heart.

Just remember some of those guitarists that you mentioned learned a different musical theory; Hendrix learned left hand playing and van helen learned to shred after his piano lessons

i feel that while the artists mentioned here may not have read music theory in a textbookish sort of way, they most certainly developed their understanding of it through years of practice. They likely had personalised indexes on how things like modes and progressions worked. But as you said, these guys are the exceptions to the rule.

i mean, if they knew the names of chords and the difference between major minor dominant etc. then they literally knew music theory, but on a basic level. i studied counterpoint with a private instructor and it was very rewarding. call me a nerd, but it was actually fun!🤓😅 and it helped in my assignments, and in songwriting for my band, and vocal harmonies in church, so while it may be unnecessary, it is definitely worth digging into.

That isn’t the point tho the point is that it’s ok not to learn theory but it’s highly recommended if you want to wright catchy songs. Where as “just trying to feel it” and spend lots of time tryingto figure out what chord should come next. Someone who has learned theory can find a good chord to come next lots quicker

I think that, if you write songs and generally know which notes/chords are supposed to go where, you already know a little bit of music theory. I never formally learned any theory, but I generally, intuitively know what I should play next, and sometimes, not really thinking in terms of traditional theory can lead to more interesting songwriting.

No practice or exercises just someone giving me an explanation of the tools i already had and kicked opened the door for me. Now i keep studying when i have the free time.
