Because a million doesn't get you much in the Bay Area. Also, notice how the video mentioned that the home the couple looked at went for almost double over asking. TBH, I think part of it has to do with how they choose to spend their money. They could easily cut 2-2.5k/month by choosing to live somewhere less nice, so there's that lol.

People like these have no appreciation for money, you can rent a decent 2bd apartment in SF for far less than 7K, they just CHOOSE to rent in the most overpriced building in the city and squander their earnings. Also they can find a 3bd in many very walkable parts of the city or in nice areas oakland in that budget no problem, they just want the most sought after neighborhoods. Bay Area home prices are bonkers but you just have to manage your expectations and spend smart.

If you didn’t notice while watching the video, it was mentioned that the family is seeking “Silicon Valley dreams”. In case you didn’t know, Silicon Valley is the technology capital in the US... that being said, there is no other state that could offer a job that pays 500k/Year starting off, while doing what you love. With that being said, cost of living in SF reflects from opportunities which surround the area. I’m finding that their problem doesn’t stem from not having enough money, it stems from the fact that they were a little ignorant about the area before moving in. They should have took a little more time to research the essentials which would guarantee them a smooth transition. Not only is San Francisco not a state, like you claim in your comment, but it is one of the only options considering the dreams these people set out to accomplish. Minimum wage in San Francisco is literally more than double, than what it is in most other states. You’re correct, you can get a mansion for a million dollars in other places, but that means they’d have to downgrade their entire lifestyle to something they don’t WANT. When you’re busting your ass for your money, you’re going to go out and get what you want. California is literally, probably the ONLY state in all of US that could be considered a first world state, maybe that’s what they want.

The property tax alone on a $1.2 milllion dollar Bay Area fixer upper is around $15,600 a year. That's $1300 a month. On top of that you have mortgage, water, gas, electric, garbage pickup, fire insurance to pay. Then you have to pay huge bills for contractors to put the plumbing, electrical, heating, drain pipes, roofing in shape and maybe have to do asbestos abatement. If you do a certain dollar amount by building permit, the County may require you to update other things like install double pane windows and do seismic foundation bolting. Something tells me that we are on a speeding bus heading toward a cliff and the driver just died of a heart attack.

Mortgage money that they can't save for, or even get from their own family and friend- and only have to pay back in installments over a period of 25 years! Try doing that with your family and friends!
