I’m the total opposite! I refuse to rent a house lol. It’s my vacation too! I’m not cooking, cleaning, etc. If there’s a kitchen, I’ll end up cooking meals. If it’s a house, I’ll feel bad about leaving towels around or not making the beds etc. We are hotel only! Haha I want clean towels and freshly made beds every day without doing it myself. And we can eat out every meal because I am not cooking. This is not a vacation for mom when you’re still cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning, etc.

I totally feel you, and maybe when my kids aren’t so little we’ll be able to vacation that way, but if doing some of those things gives us extra space for squirmy kids and saves us money so we can enjoy more activities then I’m okay with that 🤗

Agree but how can you afford that? I'm 62 yo & cannot recall a Vaca ever that was all meals out & hotel, it's cost prohibitive for us. But does sound like heaven, maybe in a different life. Lol❣️

CJ R. Well if it’s cost prohibitive, then if course it may not be an option. Everyone’s budget/income is different. We are only a family of four and my husband has a good income so it’s worth the cost for me to enjoy it more. But I understand that’s not an option for everyone

CJ R. Most hotels have free all you can eat breakfast. Restaurant meals are so large that you can usually get away with eating 1 time a day and have snacks or left overs from the day prior. Plus you don’t have to go out to a fancy place every night. A couple of nights it could be KFC or burgers. Or even grilled chicken and veggies from a store. So it is not much more expensive than buying expensive groceries at your destination.

Anna S so true! We almost always have find a $1/slice pizza shop near any beach. Pizza night is very cost effective. And like you said, even just getting subs or fried chicken from a grocery deli isn’t super pricey. We definitely don’t do fancy meals each time we eat. It would be too heavy on the stomach anyways. Heck sometimes we have a treat like ice cream or donuts around lunch time and then just have an early dinner that’s something filling.

The great thing about being a Navy family is that we always lived in beautiful coastal areas. We vacationed at home and enjoyed the tourist attractions in the off season. Hawaii was our favorite and even though the kids were young they loved Hawaii. We also lived in Maryland and got to visit all of the historical sites.

This year my husband and I are going to Myrtle Beach. We set a little aside each month to pay cash for this trip. To save money on food I have saved any restaurant gift cards I received this year (we don't eat out much) and plan to use those as well as bring my air fryer to make two simple meals in the room. We picked one themed restaurant to eat at and looked at the menu and prices online. We in turn have saved for that meal we all. All-in-all this should be a stress-free vacation and I can't wait!

I don't have children but my husband and I love traveling. So for birthdays and Christmas, we always ask for either cash or giftcards to places we go to. This is a good way for us not to be given things we don't actually need but have money/giftcard for places and experiences we would actually use. We appreciate uber giftcards or aibnb experiences to places we plan to go to.

This is the way we always vacation! I have seven kiddos and we have some food allergies too. Eating out is stressful and expensive. So I bring some freezer meals and pre made food. I spend the couple days before we leave making a soup, sauce, cake, pie, cookies, bread and cinnamon rolls. Freezer meals would be like lasagna etc. I only bring what they love and will buy a few treat cereals. Then we can focus our time on activities and not sitting in restaurants. It is a break for me because I have prepped the meals and I also like doing laundry and find it fun to do all the things at a different house. I loved how you did instacart there though!! It’s such a great service. I’ll have to check and see if it’s available where we are going in Maine. ~Janelle

What a wonderful vlog topic! I have 5 kiddos 2-12 & have learned a lot of these tips through experience (especially the medicine tip)! We have not stayed in a vacation house but we might need to start looking into that. We have always stayed in hotels with complementary breakfast and eat deli/PB&J sandwiches for lunches to keep food costs down. I especially appreciated the idea of ordering your groceries! We usually bring the non-perishables along but need to make a grocery trip. I usually pack a few toys/puzzles/books/color books with brand new crayons for the drive and give them out periodically. My best find was at a gas station stop there was free tractor catalogs at the checkout. I grabbed one for each of the kids. The older ones looked through to find ones they liked and made up a game where they would buy, sell, & trade them (working on math skills w/o knowing it😉). The younger ones just liked looking at them. Gave us 1 hour extra whine free! Thanks for all your work on This! Smiles, Abby Smith

Such a pleasure to see a new vlog this morning & all your snippets of wisdom. My children are 10-22 yrs, but when they were very young and we would travel 2 days by minivan on vacation I would periodically toss little gifts back to each child (wrapped up like presents.) Before a trip I would just go to the dollar store and pick up inexpensive, fun items for the kids to play with while traveling. Once in the car it was always fun & exciting for them to open these surprises and gave them something that would hold their attention for a while that didn't involve a screen.👍 Really it was as much fun for me as it was for them! The rest of the time we used snacks, sleep, VBS music, and audio books from the library to pass the time.😁

We rely on dvds and audio books mostly. Both my girls don’t do well reading in the car, they get it from their mom maybe because I can’t either! We never use the car DVD player unless we’re driving 4+ hours so for them it’s a real novelty and it keeps their attention. Also, stopping every couple hours to get out and stretch their legs, run around, have a snack, that definitely helps everyone 💛

A few thoughts: * I think it's odd that you had to bring your own sheets and towels. Most vacation homes (all that I've stayed in) have a washer and dryer and include the sheets and towels. They're laundered after you leave. The cost is part of the cleaning fee. I'm curious if you paid a cleaning fee. * Your home-delivery idea for the groceries is something I've never thought of. That would save a lot of time as long as you know exactly what you want. If on a road trip, it's something that can be planned when you're in the car traveling. * Awesome tip about bringing a toy you pre-purchased. It is fun to have a memento from the trip, but that could maybe be something inexpensive, like a pack of cards the kids could all share. --Great job as usual, Hilary! I haven't had young kids in quite a bit now (my "baby" is 20), but your videos bring back memories of raising my four on a budget.

Love your videos and tips, we do alot of the things mentioned already. I love the idea of ordering your groc and having them delivered. We have been on several family vacations with inlaws and we always, always wind up going to the groc store way to much. We take turns cooking, but somehow it's always us going to get things. One of the places we stayed was on a island, groc stores not as close, and stuff way over priced, so I always pack lots of water, drinks and buy as much beforehand as possible. I've learned now to pack bug spray along with sun screen and aloe for sunburn. Remember band aids and small first aid kit, with treasers just in case. Great job, love your vacation videos.

Just returned from vacations to a VRBO cottage in Quebec in the Laurention Mts. There were 10 of us representing 3 generations of two families. Definately, made veggie and cut up fruit for the 7hr journey. The favourite things to do were swimming, kayaking, nature scavenger hunts, roasting marshmellows on the fire, playing chubby bunny, reading, going to closest town for ice cream cone and just being together. Everyone made breakfast and lunch for themselves. Dinners were preplanned meals. No fuss , no muss....a wonderful vacation. Split the cost among 4 adults made it very reasonable.

I just love watching your videos so much. :) I never thought I would be so invested in your channel, but I’ve been watching you for years !! I am not a mom nor do I want children, but I just really enjoy your money-saving tips. I think one of the biggest reasons why I love your channel is because it is such a breath of fresh air in this time. All of social media is littered with overspending and the “gimme gimme” lifestyle that we are all told to cherish. I get frustrated and even down on myself when I watch other channels because I am 29 and DON’T have the granite countertops, I don’t drive a Tesla, I DON’T go on huge vacations each summer. You really showcase a GOOD, happy, NORMAL life. You and your husband live below your means and show how joyous life can be when you don’t stress over having it all. I actually got myself into debt the first 3 years of having our home because I wanted that other life. I overspent and overindulged and now I am learning to cut back and get my life in order. You’re one of the only lifestyle vlog channels I watch anymore since you show what a realistic life is ! :)
