We totally agree with you on that 🌱
Top tip: Olio is AMAZING if you live in a student city - so much food, clothes, and decorations of mine would have gone to waste in July when I moved out but I managed to give it all away to lovely families through the app. Things like pyjamas, cat litter, lamp shades, skirts, soup, books, an inflatable chair, period pads, a teddy, high heels. Honestly that's only half of it, and it's so convenient for everyone involved

Yes here in Florida it’s dark about 6-6:30p.m. But in the spring when we turn clocks forward it doesn’t get dark until 8:30-9p.m.
I enjoyed watching this challenge. Lots of tips for people on a tight budget. We don't have daylight-saving here in Western Australia because it's too hot and we just want the sun to go down at the end of the day.
My advice to people is when possible bulk buy things like lentils, dried beans, pasta and rice as you can bulk out lots of meals with them. Also batch cook meals to save on electric. Also when veg is near to its use by date, prepare it and freeze it. If cheese is cheap freeze it. You can also freeze milk (remember liquid expands when freezing so make sure there is enough gap in the bottle for expansion).

Yes, I buy in bulk, I even invested in a food vacuum machine, and some food sealer bags rolls. Never have any wasted food, I just make things out of the left over veggies like, soups and stews, make up individual portions bags, and freeze for a later date, then you can just do boil in the bag.
Amazing video what a brilliant challenge. 😊💚🌱

We don't change our clocks in Hawai'i . I perfer this because the days shorten gradually so it's not so hard to adjust. Especially in winter.Mych Aliha!❤️🌈💖
I love this video! It really reflects the struggle a lot of families in the UK are facing right now. My husband and I both have jobs and live in a detached house with our kids but because of the cost of our mortgage we have always been left with nothing at the end of the month. Now our energy bill has gone up by £200 a month it’s a real struggle to make ends meet. Thank you for keeping it real and helping with ideas to make money stretch a bit further xx
Other things could make with the veg- soup, curry (if you have some spices), bruschetta (with some of the bread), vegetable casserole.

Tesco does donate to charity but sometimes the charity won't accept the donation. Breads can go to be made into animal feed ❤️ others can be made into energy to go into stores too! Xx
Yes, Australia has Daylight savings time in the warmer months!
Other ways to save money on groceries if on a budget- look out for vouchers in supermarket magazines, newspapers, leaflets, on food packaging (sometimes you buy something and it might badge a 2 for one or 20% off your next purchase of said item), online printable vouchers.

I like how you all do this challenge, I'm on ESA due to Anxiety, PTSD and depressing caused by going through DV trauma and I love how your tips are actually helpful. My best advice is to just buy as much meals as you can, do full meals even if it is just dinner, freeze left overs, but honestly one filling meal makes all the difference, I feel like if I fill myself on a meal,I won't want to snack as much x

To be honest we all need be humbled and grateful that you have food at all no matter how much it costs. I love to someday not having to worry whether I am going to be able to afford to eat or not after paying my bills. unfortunately i happen to be one of those who has to choose between putting money towards having roof over my head vs food or go hungry.

In my house I’m lactose intolerant & my mum is glute intolerant. So we have to buy a mix foods from all over the supermarket making our food shop expensive at time OR miss out on some foods. My parents buy butter for themselves + olive spread for me. Same with milk, cheese, icecreme and many other foods they end up buying regular & vegan/lactose free items. Then for mum buying all her gluten free pancake mix, gluten free flours to make her bread etc + loaves of bread I can eat (as sometimes her loaves of bread have small amounts of dairy in).

I never have any food waste. I have invested in a food vacuum sealer machine, and the vacuum sealer rolls. Any left over vegetables, or vegetable stews, soup etc, i make up individual portion bags, and put the food in it. I can then label, date and freeze it, and just get it out when needed and do boil in a bag. I don't even waste bread, as you can make it in to bread crumbs and freeze them, or make croutons, you can even blance vegetables to freeze, or open freeze fruit, then bag it up. There is an old book you can buy from amazon or ebay called will it freeze, it tells you how to freeze everything, sorry don't wish to offend, but i will warn you, it has how to freeze meat and poultry in it, but you can skip that part.

I love learning about different places that help prevent waste. Especially when it comes to food. We have some different companies that do that in the US but depending on where you live it may actually be more expensive than the grocery store prices where I live the cheapest way that I have found to buy food that would otherwise be wasted is to buy it directly from the farmer either out of farmers market or if you know one you can arrange a meet up. Sometimes Walmart sells misfit produce.
This is an important video, done nicely too❤

I’m gluten free and Katie’s right….it’s so expensive 😭 Thankfully potatoes & rice have been my saviours 😂 but even simple things like cereal is so much more expensive! You really do have to shop around! I get my cereal in Eastern European shops as they do gluten free cereal the cheapest! And Asian stores for tofu & bulk rice! You just have to get extra clever with it 🫣 But my shopping is the most expensive out of all my family 🫠 But this was a great video! Living off a pound seemed impossible to me when I saw the title! Sadly we don’t have the lidl box in Ireland for some unknown reason! Maybe I should email and complain 😂 But OLIO is amazing! And it’s so easy to become a food hero! ❤️ And there’s so many good food waste tips on the forum for things like seeds & peels!

Hey Shauna, we're so glad that you figured out a way to get round some of the obstacles you faced being gluten free. Hopefully some of the things you do can help other people in the comments as there are many others in the same situation as you. 🙏 Yes you should definitely email Lidl as those veg boxes save so much waste. We bought one the other day with about £4.50 worth of ripe bananas - and only for £1.50, and it would have gone to waste! We really love the Olio community. There's so much to learn from the the forum, and everyone is always so conscious and polite. Sending you and your family love 💚

I did that when I was a child and a tree did grow but (and don't ask me the science and how companies do this) no apples ever grew. From what I understand the companies do something so that you can't grow their apples from the seeds. I think I was about 8 when I planted the seeds and my mum still has the trees but sadly never any apples and it's 23 years later.

Heres a cheap but tasty recipe idea. Frozen veggie fingers in a casserole dish, cover with beans, then mash potatoe, then cheese if you wish. Cook in oven for 25 mins.
Having visited Lidl at various times of day, asking staff about when they might be ready, checking online in advance etc. I have never yet managed to find a £1.50 box. In my local store at least, they seem to be put out at very inconsistent times. Which helps the people already in the store, but it makes it impossible to plan anything involving them.

3 things here, I would use basic condiments you have on hand i do not think that takes away from the budget, also why peel the carrots, those peels are loaded with vitamins, and last the water used to boil veggies in is also loaded with vitamins.
