What happened to Toyota manipulating quality control and deceiving consumers for 34 years?
Just purchased a carnival sx a month ago. One of the most comfortable rides ever along with it will turn on a dime and once you put ceramic tint on the windows you will be 10 degrees cooler giving you a great ride. Carnival has great pull while getting on the freeways and is excellent on gas. I was able also to fit three car seats in the third row side by side!

@@sociallyamberb it’s a bit tricky the slimmer car seat models fit better but all in all after 15 mins I was able to secure them correctly. Trunk space can fit two small filing cabinets side by side it’s extremely large.
Sienna is the king of Minivans. I have 2013 XLE with 185K miles. Apart from routine $100 jiffy lube (plus tire changes), just gas and go. The peace of mind factor is priceless!

My 2021 Sienna XLE 8pass is essentially similar I get 41mpg when driving locally and under 50mph. At 55mph we get 39mpg. When cruising long distance at 65mph we get 32-36mpg. At 70 and up 29-32mpg. 18gal tank. We have 215,000 miles trouble free

It's also more complex. Which means difficult to diagnose and expensive to repair. Toyota (and Honda) aren't nearly as reliable as they were even just ten years ago. I love my Prius but it's a nightmare to fix. I'd go with the Kia just because it's simple.

Appreciate the timely review. Our Carnival arrived in the US and now we await it's trip to the Midwest to arrive at the dealer. The price, warranty and availability made our decision easier.
I looked at both vehicles 2 years ago. I fell in love with the carnival but my mind went with the sienna. I'm in California with $4+ gas. The carnival would be a killer every time I'd have to gas up.
Sienna looks like a cheaper option in the long run. By 100K miles it will be already $8K more for gas expenses (in current prices) in the case of Carnival. Plus 2 years of free maintenance, reliability, and higher resale value for Sienna.
I own the Carnival and it is an amazingly comfortable vehicle on long drives. On the road, I get 28-30 mpg. At that rate, the Sienna would take a long time to make up for the cost of fuel difference. Add the additional cost of the hybrid and unless you plan on driving it until the wheels turn square, the Kia is the best value proposition hands down.
I want a minivan back with a traditional column shifter option and where one can still climb into the rear seats to attend to the kids without having to get out of the van in the rain and snow. I want a mini-van with less clap trap features that I never wanted or asked for. I don't like when modern tastes in visual appeal take away from useful and efficient functionality that makes owning a mini-van so sensible and practical. I like a van to be a van and not a van trying to identify as a car. I guess I'm just a fan of older designs. Cars today are WAY over-priced and full of features you don't need to get the job done. Whatever happened to an affordable vehicle that every day middle class consumers can afford without breaking the bank.
My $ goes to Carnival, $8K difference is not small, almost 20% less than the Sienna. Besides, a car this big, I like a V6 better than a 4 cylinder.
3.5L + 8 speed gear + front wheal drive = reliability & durability since there is nothing to break there!
Carnival is cooler and has better tech and interior quality. However, Sienna has AWD, significantly better gas mileage, and potentially depreciates less. I drove a Sienna AWD Platinum last week and it appeared to have the same wheels and they were not hub caps. Does anyone else know if the platinum awd trim has hub caps in some areas or countries?
You gave a 0.5 of a point to the sienna because your model had the backseat entertainment? I thought you said both had it available?
Great review! I like your point system! I understand that 2024 Carnival has Plug in Hybrid, a big advantage for short distance daily drivers! Also, it is going to be available as Hybrid with turbo power train 2025!
I won't talk about the trouble I've had with Kia and 2 Hyundais (although the Kia made it to 165,000 miles before the motor self destructed). Our 2021 Sienna XSE AWD has been great and gets a solid 35 non-winter non-freeway mpg. My problem with Toyota right now is the 21 months we have waited (as of today) for our next SIENNA XSE AWD !

Have you seen the trouble many Toyota owners are having by Toyota manipulating and safety and performance data of millinos of their cars? Google it. Have you noticed the recent massive Toyota recalls? You forgot entire families died due to Toyota Sticky pedal while back? There is your Toyota reputation and reliability.
The only use case i have for a minivan, and why we purchased a Sienna is because our child kicks, and in a sienna you can push the seat to a point where he cannot kick the front passenger or driver seat. This feature is not available in any other car sold in the US. Every Sienna review i have seen does not talk about this feature and use case.

Depends on the model you get with KIA. With the SX models in the US, the front passenger seat has power adjustments, including power forward and backward and leaning buttons on the inside of the seat back so the driver can adjust the seat.
Carnival for sure! I absolutely love it
If the Kia Carnival had AWD, it would win every time. @kia please make an AWD version. And please make hybrid versions. Not full Battery.
Cool review. I honestly would have given the Toyota reliability at least 3 points since stats say the Kia will not be worth the price after 5yrs where you either have to get a new one or pay to up keep. Plus the hybrid has savings should have offset the price of the Kia vs Sienna. Eventually the Sienna would be cheaper on just these 2 things alone. I don't think people who buy minis will be wanting a new one every 5 years.
Carnival 😊😊
On y'all's website cabin noise list it would be helpful to include the trim level.
do you take any insurance pricing/costs into consideration? I heard that a lot of insurers are chaging high prices for the Kia or are flat out not even covering the Kia

Almost every Kia Carnival SX Prestige model I've seen online and in person has rear seat entertainment (mounted tablets behind both front seats) for the 2nd row
The reason that your sx prestige did not have the executive seats is because they are now doing the 8 seat set up standard and allowing customers to change it if they want it. More customers want 8 seats versus the reclining seats.
One thing I noticed on car reviews of Hyundai's or kias they always say it doesn't have wireless hookup. It does, they just don't know how to use it. I own 2 Hyundai's and 2 kias and I have wireless hookups on all my cars.

You forgot to mention one of the most important difference, highway assistant. Lane centering is awesome in Hyundai and Kias

was debating this same 2 models, end up with Sienna for hybrid tech + long term reliability and maybe higher resell value
@ltserge3226

You got baited the carnival 3.5 v6 is more desirable for reliability people
I think that you guys missed on the price evaluation grade evaluation.. Yes you graded price and factored in fuel efficiency but I think the differences are more significant. if you keep your cars for 10 years with 150k of use with 60% city and 40% highway with the average price of gas being $3.62 (something we can't count on), it would cost $26G for the Kia and 15G for the Sienna (rounded numbers). That is a chunk of change. I plan on doing 250K miles with a ratio of 80\20% so my savings would not be $10 grand but rather $12 G. Add Toyota reliability and a tried and tested hybrid technology over the last 2 decades and I know which van I'm looking at. Thanks for a sound analysis for the most part.
KIA looks Mature, Elegant and even stout. The Toyota looks adolescent and has has too many Sharp points which makes it way too aggressive for a Family Minivan. Looking forward to the Hybrid KIA Carnival.
I would pick the Kia carnival! It’s a swagger wagon! 😂
Our 2022 Sienna gets us 35mpg City/Hwy.. Its resale value cant be beat. Nuff said.

I wish like the drivers seat that all seats in front and rear row were fully adjustable up and down and heated also i wish the second and first row could swivel out to allow passengers to sit facing out while entering and exiting and raise and lower for easier entrance and exit also hybid mode battery should last 10miles not 1mile in traffic. A better road noise insullation package also should be offered. A plug in hybrid should be offered for trips under 150miles.

13 mpg difference for the sienna should definitely give it more than one point. That is an extreme difference in gas mileage and fuel savings over time especially with today's fuel prices. Maybe you should have awarded a half point per extra mile per gallon to be fair.
We went from sienna to kia, reason being we live at 6000ft and travel thousands of feet up and down and losing 60hp in the sienna wasn't something we wanted. Going 0 to 60 is great but traveling from Phoenix to Flagstaff is a better test and the sienna suffers.

They both have 3rd row stow and go, Kia I believe the middle seats can be removed easily, sienna is a pain and requires turning off air bag sensors last I knew. 😅 I am wanting to KNOW for certain the same question.
I like that Sienna, damn
The cost difference will be made up with major repairs on the carnival out of warranty. Add resale to boot. 3.5 points for the price difference is dumb imo. If you buy new and drive into the ground the price difference is gone if you have to replace a transmission for instance on the carnival
Current gen Sienna does not have removable 2nd row seats -- losing much flexibility to carry bulky items. Get a Honda van instead
Prefer the newer facelifted Kia Carnival. looks like the facelift is going to also introduce a hybrid in the US too. that would be a much better comparison with the sienna.

Well, Carnival is new, but here we're I live, used Sedona and Odyssey sells for the same price tag. So no difference.
The Carnival's lack of thoughtful interior storage REALLY bothers me. No storage space underneath the center stack. Shallow door storage that won't even take a water bottle. No sunglass holder. I love so much about the Carnival, but Kia's quest to make it more like an SUV made it less practical.

No idea what they were thinking there. To be clear, I really, really like the Carnival (and also like that its eighth seat comes out with ease and doesn't leave behind a base as with the Sienna), but Kia made some dumb choices that prevent it from being the best in its class. No major repairs just spark plus at 190,000 miles Hybrid flush and transmission oil at 100,000 miles and 190,000 miles. Oil change with Mobil 1 extended performance 0-16 oil and Mobil 1 Synthetic filter every month, windshield wipers every 50days with cabin filter and air filter. New tires every 9-10months as needed Pirelli AS 3. Mostly highway use 60-70 mph. Let's see maintenance records on a Kia if it lasts that well. I've put over 2,000,000 miles on 2 1991 Toyota Camry LEs, 1993 Toyota Previa LE, 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid XLE Touring, 2016 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited, 2018 Toyota Hybrid XLE Limited and 2021 Toyota Sienna XLE Hybrid NEVER an Engine nor Transmission failure, front end, rear end, suspension, exhaust problem, rust problem. Hardly no alignment problems. They are worth every dime they cost. I drive every day for business about 400-500 miles and sometimes more. Dependability and low maintenance costs are key not initial cost of vehicle also vehicle safety 5stars very important as well as fuel economy. On hybrids the brakes last me about 240,000 miles and Hybrid flush always performed at 100,000 miles 180,000 miles 240,000 miles, 300,000 miles, 360,000 miles, 420,000 miles, and 480,000 miles if we still have the car! If Toyota is well maintained engine and transmission should last at least 420,000 miles if not abused or wrecked. Kia lasts less than half that with major engine and Transmission problems at much higher intervals. At half the cost you get what you pay for at maintenance down time 4 times. I can't afford down time. Sure if you drive 12,000 miles per year a Kia can last 10-12 years but you get what you pay for. I've never had a Toyota have major problems and only changed the radiator on 2014 Avalon recently due to very small radiator leak at 300,000 miles and still we get 38-44mpg with new Hybrid battery at 285,000 miles. Engine and Transmission perform like new. We had this car since day one!
