I feel like a lot of people may have forgotten all the stories that came out about John Phillips just after his death. Truly disturbing and heartbreaking, since he was such a great songwriter and performer. And remembering McKenzie with her drug problems during the late 1970s / early 1980s... it all kind of fits into place.

Whoever wrote this skit is extremely clever. The premise, the set up and the execution is flawless. Weaving an actual game show with contrasting characters that deliver solid lines of goofy fun with a strain of dark uncomfortable undercurrents. Contrasting characters with contrasting humour.
@siljehelen9365
Жыл бұрын
100% agree. I also do not find it in bad taste (the skit; John Philips himself was in very bad taste). Dark humor such as this - when cleverly executed - breaks the ice and opens for a much needed conversation and in turn openness about former taboos. In addition to making me laugh so hard that my tea comes out body openings I did not even know I had.
@webkid4567
Жыл бұрын
@Silje Helén I think it's important in cases like this that the characters are also totally earnest and usually oblivious.(Tropic Thunder worked partially for this reason) Jason Sudeikis really nailed the whole "concerned with the game and making lame jokes and really clueless to what's happening" thing. The moment at the end is really vital to the joke working, with Samberg's character blatantly breaking the joke of the sketch without realizing it and the other characters reacting to that. It wouldn't work nearly as well or at all if any of the characters were "in on the joke," because then the joke BECOMES the disgusting abuse and not the juxtaposition of a creepy guy barely passing as human on a family show. As soon as the characters do collectively switch to being in on the joke, the sketch ends with one last callout of how gross this guy is, reiterating that what the real guy did was not funny at all

The staging in this is immaculate, especially seeing how each family member is positioned amongst themselves. The Osmonds are in pairs back to back, and it makes them look like a well-coordinated family of wholesome entertainers. John Phillips' wife Genevieve and Mackenzie's husband Jeff are both facing slightly away from John and Mackenzie. Mackenzie's face is entirely away from her father despite the fact that she's holding his hands. It's an interesting use of foreshadowing in a short sketch. Excellent work SNL!

Oh damm In September 2009, eight years after Phillips's death, his eldest daughter Mackenzie claimed that she and her father had a 10-year incestuous relationship. Mackenzie wrote of the relationship, which she said began when she was 19 years old in 1979, in her memoir High on Arrival. She said that the relationship began after Phillips raped her while they were both under the influence of heavy narcotics on the eve of her first marriage.[2] On The Oprah Winfrey Show on September 23, 2009, Mackenzie Phillips said that her father injected her with cocaine and heroin. According to Phillips, the incestuous relationship ended when she became pregnant and did not know who had fathered the child; she said these doubts led her to have an abortion, which her father paid for. She stated, "I never let him touch me again."[1][19] Geneviève Waïte, John's wife at the time, denies the allegations, saying they were inconsistent with his character. Michelle Phillips, John's second wife, also stated that she had "every reason to believe [Mackenzie's account is] untrue."[20] Chynna Phillips, Michelle Phillips' daughter, stated that she believed Mackenzie's claims and that Mackenzie first told her about the relationship during a phone conversation in 1997, approximately 11 years after the supposed relationship had ended.[21] Bijou Phillips, Mackenzie's half-sister from her father's marriage to Geneviève Waïte, has stated that Mackenzie informed her of the relationship when Bijou was 13 years old, and the information had a devastating effect on Bijou's teenage years, stripping her of her innocence and leaving her "wary of [her] father."[22] She also stated, "I'm 29 now, I've talked to everyone who was around during that time, I've asked the hard questions. I do not believe my sister. Our father [was] many things. This is not one of them."[23] Jessica Woods, daughter of Denny Doherty, said that her father had told her that he knew "the awful truth"[24] and that he was "horrified at what John had done."[24]
“Hey Richard, I wanna point out we’re also high on life, except also downers, and also wine, and also not life!” Hahahaha
I love that Jason Sudeikis wears the same suit to host 70s family feud that Keenan wears to host it in the 2010s
