Family Camping Therapy Works If You Take Away All Devises & Media.
We really needed this family camping trip reset. Some time together without all the demands and distractions of daily life. Time without stress and anxiety--a chance to remember how much we love each other. All of us working together; needing each other...deepening our love for each other. Camping together does far more for our family than everything else we've tried, combined. Camping truly is family therapy for us.
I think immersive Nature is the key. There are many degrees of nature when camping, from luxury campers with Internet connections parked in campgrounds to deep wilderness backpacking. I say, the deeper the better. I want my family to be caught up in nature. It gets us living in the moment, fully engaged with the experience, and with each other. Rather than being in the same place with each in their own little world, a kind of separated togetherness. I think people are slowly forgetting how to truly be with each other not just in proximity but to be fully engaged and with each other.
If you've followed my channel for a while you'll know that we've "family camped" about every way possible (ie. Van, Tent, Truck, etc.) and now we're trying an all-in-one off road camping trailer. It's funny the parallel I see between my different models of stoves and the different camping vehicles we've used. They're all very good but each has an area for which it shines particularly bright. As with my stoves, I will continue to use all of my different camping vehicles. I'm pretty lucky that my situation allows that. My standalone truck has very good off-road capabilities and is small enough for narrow trails. The camping experience in the standalone truck isn't as nice because your storage area is also your sleeping area (when sleeping 3 or more). Also, you can't conveniently hang out inside the truck because climbing in and out is a bit of a chore and neither the roof top tent or the back of the truck has enough room for all of us (family of five) at one time. The van represents fast and light. It's our most minimal package while maintaining a respectable amount of off-road capabilities. The van has that big side door that opens up under the awning providing a very unique and enjoyable camping experience. Perfect for the desert in the spring and fall. The trailer gives us the ability to be set up as an autonomous base camp from which we can shuttle the truck to freely explore in different directions without needing to break down camp. So far, we are loving the concept and the camping experience is pretty darn nice. It definitely provides the most conveniences once you are out in the field but it requires more preparation and maintenance. In the end we choose which sounds funnest based on the specific needs for each trip. lol! The nice thing about a trip like this is that I can bring my entire Firebox Stove collection :)
