Falmouth Spring and The Historic Suwannee River

Exploring Falmouth Spring and the surrounding Suwannee River Valley. This first magnitude spring has the nickname “The Shortest River in the World.” It is a karst window, which is an unroofed section of a cavern that exposes an underground stream formed by cave collapse due to dissolution. This cave is made up of limestone, gypsum, and dolomite rock. Water exits the cave system at a conical depression, flows for 450 feet, then flows underground through a swallet and eventually back out into the Suwannee River. Along the way I explore areas along the historical Hal W. Adams bridge that crosses the Suwannee River and the surrounding wilderness areas. It was Florida’s first suspension bridge built in 1947. The area along the Lower Suwannee River Valley is dotted with ancient springs, Karst and limestone formations. Sinkholes and underwater caves can be discovered throughout the landscape. It’s a beautiful part of Florida where you can see some unique and fascinating scenery. Many layers of history and scenic wilderness throughout these places way down upon the Suwannee River. Thank you for watching and enjoy this old Florida adventure!

Yeah, FTB, we really enjoyed the view of the clear spring water with the doggie swimming, though we feared momentarily he could become gator bait. Those are some great underwater shots where you pan up and see the water's surface from beneath. We like anything to do with the Suwannee River. That bridge goes back to the days of "It's A Wonderful Life", but we really can't picture the angel Clarence jumping from it or George Bailey diving in after him. 🤔🧐😜😇

I swam at Falmouth Springs as a child and young teenager. Back in the day they had a rope that went over the deepest part of the springs. It was so much fun!! The other two springs we swam in a lot were Blue Springs off the Witchlacooche River and Suwannee Springs off of old U.S 129. I treasure these memories. I've traveled pretty extensively but have never found anything like that part of the world. What I love is it is still largely untouched. May it always be. We need to protect these treasures of nature.

Yes, our springs need to be protected more, even if it means less people can use and abuse them on a daily basis. So many of these springs like Ginnie, Juniper and Alexander to name just a few, are so mobbed and stuffed with people it not only takes away from the natural experience, it harms the environment. Even worse are corporate crooks draining them dry for profit. Unregulated agriculture also destroys our aquifer and springs. Sadly, much of the "Real Florida" is rapidly disappearing.

Really liking all of your recent spring videos, particularly the less well known and uncrowded ones, but still enjoy them all, big and small!

One small drought could stop just about everyone of those springs from flowing nowadays. The majority of the water being pulled from that aquifer back in 2000 went to Jacksonville. The first time in recorded history those springs quit flowing. I saw people crying at Peacock. One river drained to feed the green grass greedy in another city.

Always love your underwater footage. Great video! On a side note, I wanted to tell you about the “create a short” button underneath your videos. I highly recommend utilizing it. It lets you clip 15-60 secs of one of your long form videos and reframe it to vertical and immediately make it a KZread short. It does NOT affect your original video. In fact as a KZread short, it actually has a built in link to your original video. After you create one, you then have to go into YT Studio to schedule it. I think you might have to go into your channel customization to add your “shorts” shelf though.

I used to come here almost daily in the morning when i worked at the Pilgrims Pride right next door, would get off work in the morning and come here pretty often to unwind. Not the prettiest spring in Florida but it felt a bit less trafficked than many of the others which I really enjoy. I grew up going to Little River / Royal Springs in Branford / O'brien almost every other day of summer. Good memories
