Fallout for India’s Gorkha regiments as Nepal halts Army recruitment. Agnipath & a 200-yr tradition

#cuttheclutter #gorkhas
The Nepalese government has taken issue with the Modi government’s Agnipath scheme for short-term military service. This has exacerbated a shortage in the Army’s numbers that have dwindled sharply on account of a 3-year lull in recruitment. In Ep 1265 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains why Nepal has objected to the scheme, and discusses the long tradition of Gorkhas in the Indian Army - which today comprise seven regiments adding up to 40 battalions - as well as the concept of ‘martial races’.

My maternal grandfather served in East India company by changing his surname to a non-Brahmin one because of the requirements. He had documented his service in World War 2 (in Italy) and was active during the partition in Punjab and Jammu-Kashmir. He retired shortly after, retuned to Nepal and living a long pensioned life of almost 6 decades. He passed away at the age of 90.

@@Tokyodrift786ou can see the wikipedia about gorkha regiment, during the beginning of the recuritment it was mostly chhettri(kshtriya) and others too but mostly chhetris. But after the indian rebellion of 1857 , gorkhas were used to suppress the rebellion but fearing the same religion and brahminical influence on military assuming hindu caste being susceptible to brahminical values , they discouraged the khas groups and recruited from tribes like magar and gurung who were nature worshippers or buddhists. They feared that during the next rebellion the gorkhas would support the indians so .... Now the colonization is over , any caste can be recruited

@@trevorsam2647 well colonization was not only about occupying third world countries. Western countries like Britain wanted to exploit the far off colonies , it's resources etc... It's no doubt it used whatever available manpower viz gurkhas etc...to gain their hold over the Indian subcontinent. Brahmins like Tatya Tope , Rani Laxmi Bai were at the forefront of Indian freedom struggle. It's only people from lower economic backgrounds who had volunteered to support the British against its own people. Such people are a total disgrace to the country. Gurkhas because of total non existent economic policies in Nepal would serve in any batallions of a country for their livelihood. They are good to be hired as mercenaries. No doubt they considered joining the Wagner group in the ongoing Russo- Ukraine war. They were also used in the Jalianwala Baugh massacre. Whether we should support them in our country is a point to be considered since they are here only for their economic interests?

Additionally, they have been awarded three Param Vir Chakras, 33 Maha Vir Chakras, and 84 Vir Chakras. Not only this, they have played an important role in the Indian peacekeeping force in Sri Lanka, and have been involved in the UN peacekeeping missions in Lebanon and Sierra Leone Apart from the awards above mentioned, the Gurkha regiments have won 26 Victoria Crosses (highest bravery medal in Britain), among which 13 Victoria Crosses were awarded to British officers who served in the Gurkha regiments and the other 13 to Gurkha soldiers. Additionally, the Gurkha soldiers have also won two George Cross medals, for acts of bravery outside combat. More than 46,000 Gurkhas have died fighting for the British Crown. The Gurkha regiments have fought both World War I and World War II. The total participating soldiers were over 200,000 where more than 20,000 were deemed wounded, died or went missing in WWI and more than 23,000 in WWII. @@IndianArma Actually, they are very different. You have rightly pointed out the history, but there are some finer points. Ukraine was never a country. Hitler and Stalin divided Polish territory among themselves. This east Polish territory (which now forms western Ukraine) was fused with the eastern Russian territory to create Ukraine (There is a long version of how this happened, but this is the gist. It was a blunder by the then Communist regime). West Ukraine was always culturally different. West is Christian and agricultural, while the East is Russian Orthodox and industrial). It is Western Ukraine that is hyper-national and contributing most to the war. They are not even Slavs.

@sankalp6872 ok 👍 you're pointing towards the divergences in experiences of the people, between the 17th and 20th century and I am saying that they are culturally and racially, the same people, but hey we can talk on tangents all you want or you can chose to engage with my point, what you have stated is correct and in no way derives a conclusion that is mutually exclusive from my point. If the principle is martial race theory and its rejection, you can make a far better argument against is by not using the example of people who are not racially divergent and are in fact the same people, culturally, religiously and racially, you could have picked a better example. Also, to say that certain groups of people don't have a certain predelictiom to certain things based on a variety of factors such as social conditioning, the lifestyles of the people, the sort of climate they come from, etc and their cultural experience with a particular field including warfare, is a just ignoring facts, calling it 'martial race theory' or whatever has a hint of 19th century European gene supremacist thinking which is a whole other conversation, but certain groups of people are better at certain things, to recognise these differences does not make one racist.

During the period from 1800 to 1820, the British Empire was involved in several wars and military campaigns across different regions. Here is a list of some of the significant conflicts: 1. Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815): The British Empire, along with its allies, fought against the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte's French Empire. These wars were a series of conflicts that spanned Europe and other parts of the world, including naval battles, land campaigns, and colonial struggles. 2. Anglo-Maratha Wars (1803-1818): The British East India Company fought a series of wars against the Maratha Empire in India. These conflicts resulted in the gradual annexation of Maratha territories and the establishment of British control over large parts of India. 3. Anglo-Mysore Wars (1799, 1800-1801, 1803-1804): The British Empire fought a series of wars against the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India, primarily led by the ruler Tipu Sultan. These conflicts resulted in the defeat of Tipu Sultan and the final annexation of Mysore by the British. 5. Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784): Although it started before 1800, this war continued into the early 19th century. The British Empire fought against the Dutch Republic, resulting in British victories and the capture of several Dutch colonies, including Cape Colony (South Africa) and Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). 6. Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816): The British East India Company engaged in a war with the Gorkha Kingdom (Nepal). The conflict ended with the signing of the Treaty of Sugauli, which led to the cession of territories to the British and the recruitment of Gorkha soldiers into the British army. 7. First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826): Although it started after 1820, this war is worth mentioning as it was a significant conflict involving the British Empire. The British fought against the Burmese Empire, leading to the annexation of territories in present-day Myanmar (Burma) and the imposition of British control. These are just a few examples of the wars and conflicts in which the British Empire was engaged during the period from 1800 to 1820. The British Empire was involved in various other military campaigns, both within and beyond its colonial territories, during this time. As an expanding empire then, it was dealing with one of the conqueror 'Napeleon', who did not trust the British, on its boundaries. It was a different situation as Europe was very unstable back then. British recruited militaries from nearby regions, such as Gurkhas, Sikhs. They were always loyal. They played important role for British as well as for the establishment of the present India. At present, the world is multipolar and we see multiple geopolitical issues with neighbouring countries. Now, we need to understand 'daju bhai ko jhagada ma bahira ko manche khusi'. Those people who conquered India and recruited Gurkhas were always on the profit side and still following the same story. They are on the advantage side as always. We need to think how to utilise those energy to build our own countries. Jai Nepal Jai Bharat BRING BACK THE GLORY OF ASIA !!!

Lol, who tf said not recruiting Gurkha soldiers from Nepal is an issue for the Indian Army. Firstly, we have enough Indian Gorkhas who can be recruited. Secondly, it's a myth that Gurkha units are superior than other units and IA will collapse without them. We have Rajputana, Kumaoni, Dogra, Assamese, Naga, Ladakhi, Maratha, etc units who are equally capable soldiers. It's not the troops but the officers that matter. Since the Gurkha Rifles and Sikh Regiments have a long history, the cream of graduating officers prefer to be in those regiments. If you still believe in Martial Races then remember that Tribal Naxalites of Chattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra have fought the paramilitary for decades with nothing but crude bombs and bolt action Rifles. The officer cadre of Naxalites are more efficient than IPS officers who command units.

Actually, the British genuinely believed in the ridiculous MARTIAL RACE THEORY. Lord Roberts was its architect. It was not just incorporating vanquished forces. They genuinely considered tall, fair, blue-eyed individuals to make better soldiers (not just as warriors but also discipline-wise). Hence, Pathans, Rajputs, Sikhs, Gurkhas and Marathas were their preferred stock. The Indian army was reformed in 1956, but British elements remained. Even in the current scenario, the North has more representation in the army. That said, one needs to understand that the rest of India has had better economic opportunities in other fields, and the army is not the sole benchmark of patriotism.

I agree with you though on the fact that Gurungs are slightly taller and browner than our Eastern 'cousins' Limbus and Rais who tend to look more fairer and are more likely to have slanted eyes. Another very informative piece Sir. I was particularly taken by your explanation of the "Martial Races" theory, and wondered if that might not be extended back in time to the raising of the Scottish Regiments after Culloden in 1746. In the years following the defeat of the Jacobite forces, with England embroiled in a new kind of warfare in the forests of North America, they sought out Scottish soldiers because of their particular prowess in this kind of environment? It would also have removed a sizeable body of otherwise potentially troublesome soldiers out of Scotland as you noted was a consideration for the offer to the Gorkha's. Just a thought. Thanks again for you and your team's superb journalism.

Historically, the terms "Gurkha" and "Gorkhali" were synonymous with "Nepali", which originates from the hill principality Gorkha Kingdom, from which the Kingdom of Nepal expanded under Prithvi Narayan Shah.[7][8] The name may be traced to the medieval Hindu warrior-saint Guru Gorakhnath[9] who has a historic shrine in Gorkha District. The word itself derived from Go-Raksha (Nepali: गोरक्षा i.e., 'Protector(रक्षा) of cows(गो')), raksha becoming rakha (रखा). Rakhawala means 'protector' and is derived from raksha as well.

China is engineering this shortfall in Gurkha soldiers while also aiming to undermine future Sikh army recruitments by fanning the flames of the Khalistan movement with a view to engendering an antinational sentiment among Sikhs in India. China is already waging an undeclared war against India. We are just too naïve to realise it.

It is not feasible as PLA is army of Communist Party not of China it cannot allow any non communist to serve in it. Nepal govt is simply spreading this rumour to bargain with India. Additionaly any Nepalese does not require permission to take job in India. They can just travel to UP or Bihar and join the Agnipath scheme.

Smart people the British: 1. Identify self-interests 2. Find people who can help them achieve those interests. Label them. 3. Declare that label to be better than others. Labelled people get happy and ready to fight with unlabelled people. 4. The British realize few talented among the unlabelled people. 5. Attach new label to these talented people and propagate new theories about these newly labelled people. 6. Go back to pt 3 above.. and keep repeating. 7. Meanwhile the British keep track of progress in pt. 1 The labels are like the appreciation emails you get from your boss! Makes you work like crazy after you get them and yet those labels don’t help you pay off your mortgage or credit card bills! All it takes for the boss in achieving wonderful results is few strokes on a keyboard!

If this was all so easy and “SMART”, why could it not be used as a cookie cutter to replicate?? Why was it possible that a population of less than 0.05% of India, thousands of miles away from their homes, without physical resources that they could carry along with them, and who looked identifiably different, could do this so easily and that too for couple of centuries?? What was different??

The UK worked as a single unit - race and language made you a British at least when you are outside Britain - as simple as that (I don’t think Nizam’s son or Maharaja Harisingh’s son meeting in a restaurant in Paris would have introduced themselves as Indians)!
