Down-picking more of the notes would certainly up the difficulty. I would bet since Jason Richardson helped write the song, that's how it was originally recorded, but I'm not sure how the actual band guitarists play it live.

It is drop C (6 strings, with a low C on the 7th string) This guitar is great . You will have fun , the only downside is the lack of split coil
