Falling In Love With Lietuva - Lithuania & The Baltic Coast | Next Stop Everywhere

Our Big Baltic Adventure bounds over the border and into... Lithuania!
This spectacular little nation is actually one of the oldest in Europe and boy, are they proud of their incredible history.
Our trip starts with a trek over from the Polish border to Lithuania's capital, Vilnius. From our modest car park park-up (there's not really any sites in central Vilnius!) we venture out, early morning, into the stunning old town to savour the architecture, meander the cobbled streets and snaffle a little bit of breakfast.
Fully prepared for the day, we arrive at the Grand Duke's Palace, rebuilt in 2002 to original size and shape, it houses an fascinating museum documenting Lithuania's history and the rise and fall of the ruling Grand Duchy.
Heading out of Vilnius bound for the coast, we stop off at 'Lukenskų Namai' - an art school and campsite - the residence of renowned Lithuanian sculptor and artist Česlovas Lukenskas and his wife, Ruth. As well as a gorgeous campsite, Česlovas and Ruth run art and cooking courses, attracting students from all over the world. 'Lukenskų Namai' is their passion in life, combining their love of art and nature with good living in a truly Lithuanian way! Plus... lake swimming... we LOVE lake swmming!
Our next stop is another good'un, as we continue to drive towards the coast we overnight at the beautiful 'Medaus Slenis' - which translates as 'Honey Valley' - run by proud Lithuanian beekeeper and thatcher Ovidijus Jasinskas. The site has grown up around his honey-producing business (mainly because, according to Ovid, he makes more from the camping than the honey!). There are over 75 active hives around the campsite, so it's a place that really 'hums', and the property is dotted with Ovid's thatched buildings and shelters too. It's just a magical little place. Oh and the honey is AMAZING!
Before we hit the coast, we stop off at the Dreverna Holiday Camp (and take in some amazing kite surfing efforts!) and then it's on to Lithuania's third biggest city, and its coastal port, Klaipėda. Another wander around and a look at its multi-national history leads us to Karkelbeck campsite, right on the coast itself, where we rejoin the Baltic Sea and finish our first ever Lithuanian adventure!
We will be back though... we have to come back through Lithuania to get home!
Enjoy, and join us for our Next Stop... Everywhere!

Great watch, but just because it's a bit of a sensitive subject in Eastern Europe, I thought I'd correct you guys. 11:30 The Soviet Union didn't exist until after the first World War. Lithuania gained it's independence back from the Russians two times, once after the first World War in 1918, and the second time after the Soviet Union started collapsing in 1991. Before 1918, it was the Tsarist Russia that had occupied us. Minor mistake, but people in these regions are a bit touchy with that subject, and hey, the more knowledge, the better, right? :)

Yay, glad you guys enjoyed Lithuania. We have been living here in our van for the last month! On your way back through, make sure you head to Palanga and Nida, if you go via the coast. If you come back across more inland, head to the Hill Of Crosses! Check out our videos of Lithuania too and send us a message if you have any questions! We leave on Tuesday to head back to UK so doubt we'll cross paths but enjoy Latvia and Estonia too :) Sam (UK) & Gabija (LT)

@@nextstopevwhere Lithuanians likes to exaggerate stuff when it comes to language because Lithuanian isnt older (more archaic) than Sanskrit, but Lithuanian is considered to be the most archaic of the living indo-european languages. But its still really amazing that your grand grand ancestors (and by grand grand i mean like thousand years ago) spoke something similar to what you heard in Lithuania (because English as an indo-european language changed the most probably).

@@nextstopevwhere Lithuanian & Latvian are the only two languages left alive till today from Indo-Europian Families Baltic l-ge group, there were other l-ges in this group like Prussian for example but they died already many centuries ago. If we talking about mother of all languages Sanscrit than really you can find the most similarities with it in Lithuanian language, that really hasn`t undergone that much changes and is considered really archaistic. Actually similarity with Sanskrit you can still find also in the Latvian language nevertheless that it has much more transformed and influenced of other languages like German, Swedish (Riga used to be the biggest city of Sweden) even Finno-Ugric Language Family. Latvian l-ge is easier to learn for foreigners, but also not the easiest l-ge. A large amount of Russian speaking population living in Latvia have difficulties to manage language or they simply don`t want to learn. Well, the younger population have to learn that at least at school.

Drivers here can sometimes be annoying especially around the borders as you see people speeding at 110km/h while the speed limit is 70 but in general that's only a concern if you're driving a light vehicle :) However though, recently speeding fines have been a lot more strict as there's been a lot more radars built and portable ones stationed across major cities so driving culture is policed a lot more compared to how it was 10 years ago I honestly don't think you should have a problem at all! Good luck!

In 2013 Lithuania took action as presidency of EU and in that palace were organised various events like Ukraine attempt to join EU, but at the time because of huge influence of Russia, president of Ukraine didn't signed the agreement which would let Ukraine to start process of joining EU, after that Ukrainians were really mad and started some kind of revolution.

The randomest videos KZread suggests me... Although, as lithuanian I did enjoy it a lot. The language bit is a bit inaccurate though. It is related to sanskrit, and sanskrit did not develop from it. Language itself is over 5000 years old, still retaining lots of archaic rules in it that only we use. Though sadly, we did not have our own written alphabet until 16th century.

@@nextstopevwhere he has a piece of stone that looks like a face mounted on a stone wall (20:30) for some reason he was very proud of it :) he talked about it when I was there, he talked about it when my friends were there.

@@nextstopevwhere technically it's not 100% wrong and it's understandable but no one says it like that. maybe in some rural region of lithuania they do...? In Latvian _Labas iš Lietuvos_ is _Sveiks no Lietuvas_ btw...

@@nextstopevwhere "nuo" is used from something to something, either distance or a person while "iš" is used for a location. So your "Linkėjimai nuo Lietuvos" would mean that Lithuanian sent their regards, which is quite cute :) Maybe someone out in the open, would feel like this information relevant - one could hope :)
