Falling Back in Love with FPV

When you first setup a plane, make sure to manually adjust the control surfaces to neutral while the servos are centered. Some planes (many flying wings) prefer to have a bit of up elevon as 'neutral' position, and there's no yaw axis control. Test the plane (prop off or throttle disabled) at the bench by putting in stab mode and observing the control surfaces while you bank, pitch and yaw the plane around. Lift a wing, and that wing's aileron should move up and the other wing's aileron down to counteract your bank angle to level the plane. Lift the nose up and the y-tail elevons should move down to pitch it back down to level. Move the tail left or right and the y-tail elevons should move toward the direction of movement. Then at least you'll know the stabilization is working correctly.

Yep. Servos not matching up in angle/stabilize is is pretty common. Always better to find on the ground before launch. Also best to fly manual and trim out the plane not with the transmitter trims but with the adjustable control linkage. Otherwise stabilize mode will always be fighting it. Manual mode is also the best time to test out whether the CG is right. Stabilize will hide a wrong cg until its too late. Trim out the battery placement in manual mode until it either flys straight or drops the nose just a bit while the elevons are level or slightly pitched up. The mini talon / talon is not a slow flyer and I am guessing this model inherits some of that. Keep the speed up. Full throttle launches will also sometimes dive to one side due to torque roll so 3/4 is a good place to start with a mostly flat throw.

Individuals commercializing FPV has driven the entirety of FPV to become highly commercialised. People forget that this is a HOBBY first and foremost. Hobbies allow us to have fun, relax, and escape from the norm. Ive been saying this for years. Its nice to see that influencers are finally getting onboard.

You can check the gyro 'angle mode' while on the ground. Just wiggle the plane around and watch the surfaces move to correct. They should do the opposite of whatever wiggle you are doing.

This is exactly what the iNav learning curve is like. It’s all worth it though! It looks like your plane either thinks right side up is upside down and that down is up. Put the plane into angle mode and move it around with your hand. When you roll right, the left aileron should go up, when you roll left the right aileron should go up. For the tail, aiming the nose up, should make both ruddervators (yes, they are called that ) go down, and aiming the nose down should make both ruddervators go up. If something is behaving behaving backwards, you need to reverse the servos in iNav, not in OpenTX. The fact that it flies OK in manual, but not in any of the automatic modes makes me think that you reverse the servos in OpenTX and not in iNav. When you use iNav, you don’t do any mixing in opentx like a normal plane, just use the same opentx model that you use for quads.

Nice to see, it's not that difficult. normally I fry in manual/horizon (it's a plane ;) ) if you look in INAV 6.1 setup you can see the orientation of the plan, and how it responds to the movement. Then if you put in angle or horizon you can see how your elevons and elevator moves. I usually use autolaunch, because I'm lazy. have fun... hope this helps ...

Unless you already did it I would reflash the inav firmware and recalibrate the accelerometer after flashing. I had something similar to this happening, and just had to completely start over by reflashing it. Also in the mixer tab make sure you look at the plane picture and match the control surfaces to the right port number. Good luck. Once you get it flying smooth and nice long range wing flying is so peaceful and fun to go explore.

Maybe your flight controller thinks its backwards or sideways in the plane, could also be that the plane corrects it orientation wrong in angle mode, move it in your hand in angle mode and really think about if it corrects in the right direction, had that same problem with angle mode and only saw that it was correcting in the wrong direction like the 10th time i was checking. Also a tip: if the gps shows you the wrong direction home try disabling the compass, its not needed to calculate the orientation anyways!

Mostly I just think you need to do slightly more thorough preflights: Put it in angle (or stabilize of some kind) mode and check that it stabilises the right way - when you roll it to the left, the ailerons deflect in a way that would bring the back to level. Looking at that very rapid roll every time you put it in acro mode makes me think either you've got your ailerons reversed/swapped or your flight controller is upside down or something compared to what INAV thinks it is - check that when you're holding it level INAV's roll & pitch readout says 0. I doubt it's the V-tail servos that cause a roll that rapid.

Toss a 2s liion into the dart, fly it until i am bored (30min or so) and toss it back in the car. Pull it out the next day and fly again with no recharge. Quads are work- once you get all the electronics going, planes are easy.

Planes have a learning curve, even after flying quads for years. My first couple launches with my dart 250 mirrored yours, lawn darting into the ground 🤣 Through trial and error and research on the many inav groups and forums, I found out that I needed to add a few degrees of “reflex” to the control surfaces (basically “up” trim but done manually). After that I finally got it up in the air and she flew beautifully. Not sure how the reflex would work with your plane as the dart 250 only has two control surfaces and uses “elevons”. What I would do with your angle mode issue is plug everything in, toggle angle mode and move the plane around in your hand to see what the surfaces are doing before you even attempt to hand launch. If everything is plugged in and set up right, while holding your plane all of your surfaces should be pretty much flat. This will tell you if you have any issues right away. With how yours was wanting to roll right away, if you would have looked at the surfaces before flying, I bet your ailerons weren’t flat at all and trying to compensate already. Inav auto launch is a game changer as well. It can save the gnarliest, nastiest of tosses (given your plane is set up correctly). For long range stuff, cruise and alt hold are fun to toggle on, sit back and relax while you’re surfing the clouds (low clouds 400’ and under haha). Good luck and happy flying 🤙

  • @funkynerd_com
    @funkynerd_com9 ай бұрын

I have some feedback on what you are "doing wrong". Or, could just do better. First, you can check angle mode without launching it. Put it in angle mode and move the model around and make sure the ailerons move the correct way on their own. Tilt the model left and the left aileron should come up while the right goes down. Tilt it right and the right should come up while the left should go down. Tilt it forward and the elevators should come up, and vice-versa. Very easy pre-flight test that you should do before EVERY launch along with the high-5 check. If you have that sorted then it is actually safe to auto-launch, even for a maiden. Also, turn on continuous auto-trim in iNav to get it trimmed without any effort. I'm sure you've done your research, but just in case you don't know about Painless 360, it is probably the best KZread channel for newb wing and iNav pilots. Good luck on Maiden 2.0!

For the isues in angle Mode, read the comments from @jahnkeanater and @wesorama. In addition: 1. Check CG. Seems a little bit noseheavy 2. Throw it harder. More speed means more authority on the controll Surfaces and more lift. 3. You have a V-Tail, means Rudder and Elevator share the Surfaces. You can't set your Elevator to 100% in the Mix because your Rudder need some deflection too. For the launch issues in Manual: To fighting the Torque Roll in full manual setup a Switch on your Radio to enable the Trims on the Ailerons and in addition create on that Switch a second Flight mode "launch" with its own Trim-Settings. Trim the Ailerons to the direction of your Motor spinning direction. After Launch the Switch set the Trims back to neutral. Good Luck

Nice! I have been flying FPV quads for 6 years and got into planes last year, and I had to learn a lot of new stuff too. Look very carefully at the ailerons at 3:19 (attempt 3) and 6:40 (attempt 10), they seem to be reversed as you move the plane. When you have a plane in angle mode and roll it, the aileron on the high wing should be up, and the aileron on the low wing should be down, to get it back to level. Did you reverse the aileron channel on your radio? If so, that would explain why it works in manual but not in angle. Check the receiver tab and make sure nothing is reversed. If anything needs reversing, do it on the flight controller, in the servo mixer (set aileron weight to -100%), not on the radio. On your radio, you can use the same 4 channels as for a Betaflight quadcopter. As for board alignment, at 2:12, the arrow on your FC is pointing forward, and when you fly it, compass and home arrow appear correct, but please check the Setup tab to be sure. The artificial horizon on OSD would be useful for this. (it will move wrongly if board alignment is not correct) At 4:48, it looks more like reversed ailerons than incorrect board alignment. It starts rolling slowly to the left, and then suddenly accelerates, suggesting it wanted to roll the other way, but it still rolls the wrong way, so it corrects even more (in the wrong direction)

Can you put an SD card in the flight controller and collect logs (blackbox)? It would be interesting to see what angles the flight controller saw in flight and what servo outputs it sent.

Wings are great man. Try out the ZOHD drift with a 2S 18650 and just a plain PWM RX. It's so light its hard to fuck up and it will fly for like 2 hrs.

The best FPV wing was the parrot disco, you could use LTE to fly the wing for as long you had a good mah battery

You can see your ailerons are definitely deflecting the wrong direction while in flight using angle mode. So either your gains are too low and the FC doesn’t have time to react, or your aileron direction is reversed.

seems like the FC is upside down.. it keep attempting to flip when you put on angle mode. Just a thought. Maybe flip the orientation in whatever software youre using.

I got nothing on what is wrong, but you might consider flying manual up high then flip to angle mode. This way you are high enough to flip back to manual and recover before becoming a ballistic lawndart. It might save you some glue, and cameras.

It's not something simple like the board being mounted upside down (or otherwise configured to be inverted,) right? It seems like the plane keeps wanting to turn over when you turn on angle mode.
