Just like in Scotland, the animals are eating everything. Without the deer in Scotland there would be scrubs and trees, without the many sheep there would be vegetation in the Falklands. The Faroe Islands has the same issue, bare hills because of too many sheep eating everything.

I served on the Island for a year starting from April 78. We lived in an old hut which had been lane derelict for 30 years until the Royal marines chamferred it up to live in. Absolutely no money was put into a proposed new barracks which was wished to be sited near the airport along with a plan to quickly blow up the airfield with pre-planned and readied mines. Billions of dollars later...........and I had an extra visit in 82.

@@dogsnads5634 The airport was of massive importance and its destruction would have caused them lot of problem's.

The top layers of tarmac were first applied (1985/86) to a very deep dry lean (concrete) base of the main and secondary runways of Mount Pleasant Airport. This is not to be confused with the very much smaller airport at Port Stanley some 30 miles or so from here. No airport here is named after Shackleton, that was the name given to the resurfacing and refurbishing project which this video depicts. The asphalt was presumably relaid because the old tarmac was 25 years old and worn, and the landing lights, hydraulic arrestor gear and power and fibre optic cable replaced or re-routed to suit new technology. The concrete base will probably be good for 100+ years, it’s the tarmac that wears out. The materials would have been driven by lorry from the harbour to the airfield about 8 miles away. (I worked on the original).

POR LA DERROTA ARG AFUUUUUERA LA DICTADURA NO OS OLVIDEIS

I was there in 1984 on the Chinooks, we were based out at Kelly's Garden (San Carlos). WE kept them flying in all weathes delivering ONE container at a time to get them started at MP! I worked on the mighty VC10 many moons ago and it pleased me to see them still flying then from the airport, but sadly now they replaced them with some crap aircraft! Loved it down there, I would love to go back but i retire in a few years and Im no millionaire so doubt I'll ever see the Islands again. We got there on a troop ship and came home on SS UGANDA a gem of a ship sadly she is now long gone too. All the best to the forces in the Falklands!

There’s so much space for more people on the Falklands. Even if the population increase 10 folds, it is still way under populated.

I recall reading in some Falkland Islands Government literature some years ago that the people can emigrate from Britain to the the Islands as long as they have useful skills or want to establish a business.

Looks like another wonderful achievement! I was lucky to be involved in the very first contract in 1986! Well done Colas!

I forget ..who was the contractor ? Seems very vague !

You get the impression colas did some work down there

They should build a road network. It doesn't have to be extensive, but something that will connect and link the various outlying areas. They can use natural resources such as hard rock, ballast and volcanic clay already existing on the islands.

Colas, what a wonderful piece of publicity, well done. In my ignorance I did not know the new airfield was dedicated to Shackleton, so thank you for educating a 60+ year old Prior to this I was watching a video of RN Phantoms "burning up" the US Saratoga flight deck, quite literary.

By staying with France and Netherlands and other states with overseas territories in the EU has actually made them vote in favour of UK rule over the islands.. by leaving the EU they could theoretically turn against us in the UN as they kinda have started to do with the Chaigos Islands issue.. that said if Jeremy Corbyn wins he would leave every colony UK has but that has nothing to do with the EU.

It is known that Britain was NOT the first to sight or land on the Islands, the possibilities are a few, including that of Piti Reis they Turkish commander, it is possible that the British were the first to set foot or sail into the canal, as well as not the first. But the Dutch are who are believed to have discovered the Islands and named them. The French were the first ones to build a settlement which is ultimately the only thing that really counts. The Spanish then made justice on their original territorial claim and officially bought whatever rights the French had earned, which entitled them to kick the British off the Western Island. And 2, by the time Britain "lay its unlawful claim", they were already Spanish Territory, in fact the British knew this and thought they could try to get away with sneaking in Port Egmont anyways, and yet eventually yielded back to Spain and abandoned Port Egmont. In fact evidence of a robbing policy is the fact that they never went back to Port Egmont, but took the Islands from the Argentine on the Eastern Island which they had never set foot on. The British left as always antagonistically, because all they've ever done in this world is bring discord fight and war to the peaceful existence of people. While Spain was at that point still in the process of civilizing the old world giving equal rights under god to all people in conquered. Very different to how Britain treated its colonized subjects it would put to work for his Majesty, take their resources and managed the business "their way" through slaves and so forth. Spain did not have "colonies," that word comes from English History. Spain made province type autonomous territories often with local governors. The Southern Cone and Malvinas was part of the Viceroyalty of the River Plate, with capital in BUENOS AIRES. We had the strongest world currency, and Britain basically was jealous and wanted to undermine and have all that Spain had earned. The Viceroyalty, became the United Provinces with capital in BUENOS AIRES, and the United Provinces became Argentina with capital, Buenos Aires. When Spain retreated in 1811 from the Malvinas because of Argentina, Argentina rightfully inherited its abandoned territories through its victory. No one in South America contests that, that's why they all support the Argentine claim (unless they want to kiss the IMF, the U.S. or U.K.'s ass. Britain did not seize the Islands upon Spain's retreat, it waited for the right contextual situation, lied to Argentina like a thief about being its ally, while it forcefully removed the Islands Argentinian loyal occupants during a key moment of weakness caused by ... no other than the U.S. pirate attack on Puerto Soledad. Why? Because they did not want laws and rules, they wanted to scavenge. The U.S. and U.K. are famous for tag team robbing territories, like they did with Diego Garcia, the Virgin Islands and other Caribbean "situations". It looks to me you have been exclusively educated by the British propagandist narrative taught to the British people and the Islanders; because you seem to know nothing other that what concerns Britain's convenient version of events, though self servingly false it may be. Patrick Edgar Regini - The problem with that argument is that when Argentina tried to assert control over the islands, they captured South Georgia. There is zero Argentine or Spanish history in South Georgia to support an Argentine claim. South Georgia history is 100% British until the 1982 invasion. It all comes down to this: Argentina tried to take territory from the UK by force, thinking nothing could be done about it. The result was war, in which Argentina was soundly defeated. That settles the matter, as far as I am concerned. If Argentina ever attacks again, I hope the UK will have the means and the will to destroy every military base in Argentina. I would rather there was peace. That will come when Argentina formally relinquishes their phony claims.

Es triste ver como mientras los Ingleses y Kelpers progresan construyendo en las Islas en continente los políticos de turno se la pasan en disputas por poder, dinero, clientelismo y el país teniendolo todo no avanza. Un ejemplo salta a la vista, en las Islas estan proyectando la pavimentación haciendo rutas y calles con material de construcción de primera calidad, mientras tanto en las provincias patagónicas no te levantan una ciudad un aeropuerto o un nuevo puerto ni por chiste porque no solo están en la pelea política de ver quien se la lleva mejor sino que nunca hay preusupuesto o el del partido tal se lo traba rn el congreso al del otro partido y también que por ejemplo en la provincia de Buenos Aires si un intendente manda a hacer una obra es un bacheo de mala calidad o calles que de un año para otro terminan requesbrajadas partidas llenas de pozos porque inflan un presupuesto por un valor cuando el coste de los materiales usados son bajos dada la baja calidad, conclusión pasan un presupuesto por un número, compran por uno inferior y se quedan con el vuelto y las calles parecen sacadas de un paisaje lunar. Así no se puede progresar, así no podemos cambiar de mentalidad, uno puede pedir y decir que las Malvinas son Argentinas pero la verdad y la realidad va a ser que en un futuro nos vamos a quedar azorados con las frases en la boca porque del otro lado vamos a ver algo tan insuperable que nunca podremos alcanzar. Esa es la verdad. Lo lamento por mi país Argentina al que amo con mi vida.

Sorry about your misinformed belief, but NO. It is known that Britain was NOT the first to sight or land on the Islands, the possibilities are a few, including that of Piti Reis the Turkish commander, it is possible that the British were the first to set foot or sail into the canal, as well as not the first. But the Dutch are who are believed to have discovered the Islands and named them. The French were the first ones to build a settlement which is ultimately the only thing that really counts. The Spanish then made justice on their original territorial claim and officially bought whatever rights the French had earned, which entitled them to kick the British off the Western Island. And 2, by the time Britain "lay its unlawful claim", they were already Spanish Territory, in fact the British knew this and thought they could try to get away with sneaking in Port Egmont anyways, and yet eventually yielded back to Spain and abandoned Port Egmont. In fact evidence of a robbing policy is the fact that they never went back to Port Egmont, but took the Islands from the Argentine on the Eastern Island which they had never set foot on. The British left as always antagonistically, because all they've ever done in this world is bring discord fight and war to the peaceful existence of people. While Spain was at that point still in the process of civilizing the old world giving equal rights under god to all people in conquered. Very different to how Britain treated its colonized subjects it would put to work for his Majesty, take their resources and managed the business "their way" through slaves and so forth. Spain did not have "colonies," that word comes from English History. Spain made province type autonomous territories often with local governors. The Southern Cone and Malvinas was part of the Vice-royalty of the Plata River, with capital in BUENOS AIRES. We had the strongest world currency, and Britain basically was jealous and wanted to undermine and have all that Spain had earned. The Vice-royalty, became the United Provinces with capital in BUENOS AIRES, and the United Provinces became Argentina with capital, Buenos Aires. When Spain retreated in 1811 from the Malvinas because of Argentina, Argentina rightfully inherited its abandoned territories through its victory. No one in South America contests that, that's why they all support the Argentine claim (unless they want to kiss the IMF, the U.S. or U.K.'s ass of course). Britain did not seize the Islands upon Spain's retreat, it waited for the right contextual situation, lied to Argentina like a thief about being its ally and friend (same as 82, tag team once more, this time going against the O.A.S.), while it forcefully removed the Islands Argentinian loyal occupants during a key moment of weakness caused by ... no other than the U.S. pirate attack on Puerto Soledad. Why? Because they did not want laws and rules, they wanted to scavenge the land. The U.S. and U.K. are famous for tag team robbing territories, like they did with Diego Garcia, the Virgin Islands and other Caribbean "situations". It looks to me you have been exclusively educated by the British propagandist narrative taught to the British people and the Islanders; because you seem to know nothing other that what concerns Britain's convenient version of events, though self servingly false it may be. Like what is currently taught about WW2, "my little savoir of the world, liberator of the Jews hero" LOL lol In fact, the English language is today definitely the greatest producer of lies in human history out of all the world's literary history, and people in both America and the England are both starting to admit that. This is a conflict that has to do with the world's countries honoring and respecting each other as equal nations entitled to the same mature acknowledgment of every issue that would be important to ones own nation. When you stop reading only British sourced material, and learn what actually happened on the Falkland Malvinas Islands, not the narrative the English language consciously has been disseminating and indirectly educating the world with, you see that there is indeed a strong argument on behalf of Argentina in terms of them having had earned greater sovereignty right to the islands by 1820 than Britain possessed at that point, by political definition. However Britain, as it considers its wishes and wants above any notion of respect and equality among the nations the world, has always used its far greater wealth and military power to incur invade meddle with and intervene in South America (and the world) in particular Argentina. ...I bet you have no idea how many military incursions Britain carried out against Argentina throughout history. Britain knew Argentina had a strong case in 1833 for the islands now being rightfully belonging to their administration, but instead of arguing and settling with them by recognizing Argentina's case and their own governments absence neglect and lesser political substance of their own claim, which originated in its confrontation against Spain for colonial domination of the islands, while Argentina though it appeared in the dispute last in terms of it being a Republic, came to the scene with the islands already put within the government of Buenos Aires's administration by Spain since 1776, and was the first country to endow the islands with and actual integral national sovereignty, and "a possible colonial claim". I bet you didn't know that either. Nonetheless, Britain simply decided to forcefully take them from Argentina at a moment it could not defend itself in part because it had just recently been unjustly and abusively attacked by the United States. Never in 150 years until 1982 did Britain ever take Argentina seriously nor respected their continual protests and claim enough to truly mean to pursue an honorable resolution and settlement to the conflict, offensively blackmailing the country with commercial favor and phony friendship in exchange for silence over the dispute. It immediately proceeded to create a strategy to forge the islands away from Argentina while ignorning the dispute; a ploy fake construct of legitimacy which cleverly changed the notions of "invasive colony or occupation" to the term "British Overseas Territory". Britain then used principals which would have been inapplicable to a political international dispute and conflicted situation through putting its own people on the islands as a human shield and then vesting their significance with values of sovereignty like "right to self determination". By doing this Britain intentionally confused the situaion and silence the real argument by still to this day painting over the past and true history of usurpation of an Argentine territory and making it about a colonial situation, misinforming the world and keeping it from paying attention to the real history that occurred, and other facts like for example that the islanders were brought to the islands after expelling Argentina for the purpose of having them fight for the right to the islands when the time came. This is how London attempts to avoid facing justice for its actions making it a situation to do with "a non self governing territory's people decision", rather than the truth which was an action committed against Argentina on Argentine territory, giving rise to this dispute born in 1833. In other words, Britain would have people believe this is about two countries fighting over an independent piece of land, when what actually occurred is that Argentina had incorporated to its territory a geographically necessarily belonging part of land that had been disputed between Britain and Spain, and that ultimately Britain being on the other side of the globe, de-prioritized and never managed to settle and establish administration on, nor of it, having been present on the islands for barely four years 50 years prior to Argentina's official inclusion to its territory. You can see British strategy still going on today, by for example noticing how Britain was quick to make sure that the headlines the world read in 1982 and everything that would be said thereafter never told the story that the Junta invaded in order to recuperate these islands that were occupied by Britain in 1833 after expelling the Argentinians off them first, nor that it was Britain who decided to use the force of war in 1982 once more to take them from Argentina. Argentina did not start a war in 1982, it merely took back and recuperated territory that had been taken from them originally. Britain never sought a peaceful resolution, because it needed the action to be seen as an attack on its territory so that it had an excuse to create a war on the islands. The British intentionally educate people to believe their strategic narrative through the selection of phrases like "Argentina invaded British territory". Through explanations of political principals on of how for example they run their British Overseas Territories, Britain audaciously is looking to change in front of everyone's noses the definition and description of international matters such as colonial expansionism, by using and fake prioritizing the importance of the residents of these places, so that essentially it can hide its own objectives and get away with stealing, while it has the world believe it behaves nobly.

Very informative,but the "brass tacks" are that the majority of the People who live on the Islands see themselves as British.Sadly what happened in the 1800's doesn't have much bearing in 2021.The French don't have a problem with the Channel Islands being part of the UK.......and they are SO much nearer to France than Argentina is to the Falklands.Its not like Argentina is overpopulated......is it?Maybe the Argentinians will control "Las Malvinas" one day,but it will only happen once the "Brits" have left the Falklands.

It is not about the war to recuperate the islands in 1982, nor about the islanders themselves. If anything the islanders should be complaining to Britain about putting them intentionally in harms way not just once, but twice! If we are to respect each other as nations in this world, nations of equal right to be acknowledged and honored, things can not be as you and your country are attempting to forge and twist them. The principle of a people's right to self determination may very well be an issue between the islanders and London, but not between the islanders and Argentina as the conflict is between the British and the Argentinians. The islanders do not fit the qualification of an integrally autonomous sovereignty of themselves, and thus nor are they relevant to the list of non self governing territories at the U.N, as they have always been since their arrival on the islands willingly under British rule and moreover brought to the islands to serve in the purpose of unlawful expansionism by shielding London from having to deal before the world with Argentina about their denouncement of this territory they consider robbed from them. ... You and your country can keep trying to re-define this matter, attempt to bury events concerning Argentina and its right to nationhood, you can keep trying to turn this into some politically capricious contemporary matter centered around the war of 82 and the islanders falsely accusing Argentina of, but the facts about it, the fact that neither Britain nor the United States possessed any right to attack and remove the lawfully established Argentine settlement in 1820, are never going to change as they have been laid down already in history by all the recorded events concerning all three countries, therefore unchangeable.

Patrick,you are obviously a well educated man,unlike me who only went to a "Secondary Modern" School.The ultimate irony there is that someone I know,who is a few years older than me was with Colonel H Jones of the 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment who lost his life whilst in the Falklands,during the war there in 1982.So Britain has run the Falklands since 1833,nearly 190 years.So you are saying that Britain "stole" the Islands from Argentina in 1820.Can't argue with that,only alot of Countries were invading other ones at that time.Lets see now,I believe that the ethnic origin of nearly 97% of Argentinians is European.By the way,my ethnicity is 91.7% English,and 8.3% Scandinavian.So you can say that my ancestors are English.....and have been for a very long time.I would imagine that the original occupants of Argentina would have been native Indians? So when Spain conquered Argentina,they must have killed alot of the "Natives" in the process? So pray tell me,what's the difference between that,and Britain booting out Argentinians from the Falklands in 1820? They had nearly 150 years to win them back,so why did it take until 1982 for that to happen? While we're on the subject of not very nice People;what about the fact that between 1939 to 1945,Britain and her Allies were trying to save the World from one Adolf Hitler,whilst Argentinian was giving the Nazis shelter? There are about 10 different points that we could argue each one of them in terms of what it was all really about. If the world is going to "work it out" and solve its political sovereignty issues and confrontations, we have to draw a line somewhere, somewhere sensible where we can work with realities still existing and comprehensibly represented. That would mean all modern nations today represented at the United Nations. Otherwise we could keep moving the bar back to oblivion in the necessary premise of seeking justice for everyone, not just a few of us. In this sense the old civilizations destroyed by the Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Dutch and Germans are too far gone and dissolved to draw any reasonable construction of justice through representation. That's why people like the Mapuche in Chile and Argentina are shouting a bunch of lies based on righteous sounding ideologies that in truth would not be about these arbitrarily mixed people. On the other hand, Britain and Argentina were both here in their present form during the 1830's, during the creation of the U.N. and now. Is war the answer to you? Shouldn't we be praising Argentina for patiently hanging on the diplomatic means for 187 years already? Isn't that what supposedly the world and countries like Britain purport to want for the world? To resolve things diplomatically? The point is about respecting each and looking for a just way to end conflicts, and seek a fair compensating solution, like split the islands in half for example, not exploit one's superior military and economic power to disrespect and ignore the importance a people give a historical conflict that is about land taken from that people. What your logic is proposing is that as a world we should say to countries that are weaker poorer and needier of good relations with others to whom injustice was committed to by a stronger one, "oh well!! tough! get over it!" @@Patrick.Edgar.Regini Patrick,I don't think that War is the answer to problems,but sometimes it appears that is the only course of action available......sadly.As long as the People on the Falklands/Malvinas want to stay British,I can't see any other solution to the issue,than they stay as they are.Can't remember if I mentioned this to you,but here goes.I don't know if you are aware of the Channel Islands just off the Coast of France,but they are British.We are not talking 400 miles here,more like 30 or more.France could try and claim them,but they haven't as far as I know.On one of the Islands....Jersey,they speak "Jersey French," which is a mixture of French and English.There are quite a few French place names on Jersey,maybe the French think,as their Country is so big.......they don't need any more Land.Argentina is very big as well,unlike the UK which is overcrowded,and not very big,with a population of about 60 Million.

This conflict dispute is historical, and based on an event of forceful usurpation that was diplomatically never forgiven by Argentina. It is not about the war to recuperate the islands in 1982, nor about the islanders themselves. If anything the islanders should be complaining to Britain about putting them intentionally in harms way not just once, but twice! If we are to respect each other as nations in this world, nations of equal right to be acknowledged and honored, things can not be as you and your country are attempting to forge and twist them. The principle of a people's right to self determination may very well be an issue between the islanders and London, but not between the islanders and Argentina as the conflict is between the British and the Argentinians. The islanders do not fit the qualification of an integrally autonomous sovereignty of themselves, and thus nor are they relevant to the list of non self governing territories at the U.N, as they have always been since their arrival on the islands willingly under British rule and moreover brought to the islands to serve in the purpose of unlawful expansionism by shielding London from having to deal before the world with Argentina about their denouncement of this territory they consider robbed from them. ... You and your country can keep trying to re-define this matter, attempt to bury events concerning Argentina and its right to nationhood, you can keep trying to turn this into some politically capricious contemporary matter centered around the war of 82 and the islanders falsely accusing Argentina of, but the facts about it, the fact that neither Britain nor the United States possessed any right to attack and remove the lawfully established Argentine settlement in 1820, are never going to change as they have been laid down already in history by all the recorded events concerning all three countries, therefore unchangeable.

Sorry about your misinformed belief, but NO. It is known that Britain was NOT the first to sight or land on the Islands, the possibilities are a few, including that of Piti Reis the Turkish commander, it is possible that the British were the first to set foot or sail into the canal, as well as not the first. But the Dutch are who are believed to have discovered the Islands and named them. The French were the first ones to build a settlement which is ultimately the only thing that really counts. The Spanish then made justice on their original territorial claim and officially bought whatever rights the French had earned, which entitled them to kick the British off the Western Island. And 2, by the time Britain "lay its unlawful claim", they were already Spanish Territory, in fact the British knew this and thought they could try to get away with sneaking in Port Egmont anyways, and yet eventually yielded back to Spain and abandoned Port Egmont. In fact evidence of a robbing policy is the fact that they never went back to Port Egmont, but took the Islands from the Argentine on the Eastern Island which they had never set foot on. The British left as always antagonistically, because all they've ever done in this world is bring discord fight and war to the peaceful existence of people. While Spain was at that point still in the process of civilizing the old world giving equal rights under god to all people in conquered. Very different to how Britain treated its colonized subjects it would put to work for his Majesty, take their resources and managed the business "their way" through slaves and so forth. Spain did not have "colonies," that word comes from English History. Spain made province type autonomous territories often with local governors. The Southern Cone and Malvinas was part of the Vice-royalty of the Plata River, with capital in BUENOS AIRES. We had the strongest world currency, and Britain basically was jealous and wanted to undermine and have all that Spain had earned. The Vice-royalty, became the United Provinces with capital in BUENOS AIRES, and the United Provinces became Argentina with capital, Buenos Aires. When Spain retreated in 1811 from the Malvinas because of Argentina, Argentina rightfully inherited its abandoned territories through its victory. No one in South America contests that, that's why they all support the Argentine claim (unless they want to kiss the IMF, the U.S. or U.K.'s ass of course). Britain did not seize the Islands upon Spain's retreat, it waited for the right contextual situation, lied to Argentina like a thief about being its ally and friend (same as 82, tag team once more, this time going against the O.A.S.), while it forcefully removed the Islands Argentinian loyal occupants during a key moment of weakness caused by ... no other than the U.S. pirate attack on Puerto Soledad. Why? Because they did not want laws and rules, they wanted to scavenge the land. The U.S. and U.K. are famous for tag team robbing territories, like they did with Diego Garcia, the Virgin Islands and other Caribbean "situations". It looks to me you have been exclusively educated by the British propagandist narrative taught to the British people and the Islanders; because you seem to know nothing other that what concerns Britain's convenient version of events, though self servingly false it may be. Like what is currently taught about WW2, "my little savoir of the world, liberator of the Jews hero" LOL lol In fact, the English language is today definitely the greatest producer of lies in human history out of all the world's literary history, and people in both America and the England are both starting to admit that.
