FALCONRY: How to take birds up from the moult, Harris hawks and others

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

By request here are some thoughts on taking your bird up from its freelofted summer moult. How to catch up your Harris hawk, redtail , goshawk, falcon and so on! We also look at the fact your now seemingly wild bird will actually soon revert back to the calm hunting partner it was before the moult

Dave look at the video again and watch the falcon when she has eaten her chicken. The way she looks at you, You can almost hear her say "stop messing Dave where is the rest of my food.😂😂. Great video as usual Dave.

hello it's always a pleasure to watch, plus it's nice KZread offers translations because I'm French, a quick question if you have the time of course to answer it, do you plan in the future to do a sort of "special" PDF on the Harris's hawk bringing together all the valuable advice and remarks that you have acquired over all these years (example: health of the bird, essential equipment, observations of behavior and language, moulting, the importance of flight types depending on the weather, training depending on what you want your bird to do, etc.). you can tell me the videos are there for that and besides it's correct putting a digital summary would seem to me a good idea. (I think you should survey your subscribers) I ask the question because having taken a lot of notes over time and your videos I am still afraid of missing out on a lot of things because the amount of knowledge in the field is so gigantic. I took the term "special" at the beginning because by logic I remain convinced that each type of bird by logic, has its specialties, thank you again for all your content, passion and kindness in general.

Thanks for that . This may help ; I’m hopefully getting a new Harris hawk to train at the end of this year ( a late clutch) and will try and do a series of videos training him , which then could be put into a playlist ?

Hi Dave, I don't have a hawk yet but planning get a Female Harris next year. I did read one book that says you should still have daily interaction with the bird during the moult, still handle it daily and take it from mews to weathering as normal suggesting that the bird remains well manned and easier to train ready for the season. I suppose the issue here may be if the bird is at a high weight, it may not need/want your attention and you will just stress it out more by handling it daily? Always some conflicting advice out there, I suppose it depends on what works for you and the temprement of the bird at the time and being prepared to adopt different approaches. But thanks for another informative and reassuring video.

Depends on the bird the species and you . Almost always a bird that moults out unhandled and unstressed at all will moult a more complete moult , deffo with goshawks. Any bird moulted out and left will still quickly be the bird you put down after a short time of retraining etc. I’ve moulted all kinds handled and left alone , personal choice but if a hh I’d mount in a freeloft it can see out if with a hidden from the outside good chute . My goldie is moulted and handled this year and most years he is , the years he’s freelofted to moult there’s little difference . If moulted free lofted you have more chance of a holiday as safer for someone to just pop food in there than a tethered bird … Hope that helps
