    In all my decades of cycling, I've gone through a red light exactly once (wet brakes failed to respond). I just can't believe people think that it's acceptable, any more than 'phone driving.

  • @trs4u

    @trs4u

    'Against the rules' is against the rules. "Acceptable" is going to be highly subjective, but cyclists going through red lights are putting no groups of people at risk of being squished into road jam in single incidents, [n]or 10s of 1000s of pounds of damage being caused. 'Acceptable' is a rum way to construct an argument. Sentencing and costs is how we as a society express 'acceptability' of rule breaking. A cycle RLJ might cost £100, using a phone while operating heavy powerful, potentially life-ending machinery on the public highway, your livelihood. That seems proportionate to me. YMMV

    @@trs4u idiotic and selfish take. Ignoring the risk to themselves (riding into a junction where there's oncoming traffic is incredibly dangerous and cars won't be expecting you let alone other idiots on bikes who are doing the same thing), cyclist who disregard traffic lights are danger to pedestrians who won't expect cyclist to completely disregard basic rules of the road. I enjoy both cycling and driving, and can tell you that cyclists behave like complete morons on the road, of course not all are bad

    @trs4u are you serious? Going through a red light is illegal, regardless of your mode of transport. There aren't levels of acceptance, it should not be done. Saying a cyclist wouldn't reduce someone to road jam is no excuse. What is well documented are cyclists who collide with pedestrians, and cause vehicles to swerve which could result in a serious collision. Nor is it acceptable, safe or legal for an adult cyclist to swerve up onto the pavement to avoid red lights. I 100% agree that people using phones whilst in their cars etc should be penalised. But its hard to see what danger there is whilst someone is sitting at a red light, handbrake engaged whilst scrolling, compared to a cyclist riding through a red light! Or one that is riding up and down crowded roads, constantly taking their eyes away from the road to stare into people's cars, rather than be looking out for potential hazards to pedestrians and other road users. Nearly 1,000 cyclists nicked at one busy London junction during a police crackdown recently, all for jumping red lights. That's appalling, inexcusable behaviour. The level of hypocrisy and entitlement by many cyclists using this site is laughable. We should all be looking out for other road users and pedestrians, not be distracted or riding, driving, biking illegally. We have to share the roads, and as a motorist, I will, and always have been, cyclist and biker aware. You should show everyone else the same respect

    There is no way to match a number plate to a bicyclist. At least he’s on camera. The police do catch cyclists running red lights from time to time.

    @@trs4u Wrong, because a cyclist could hit a crossing pedestrian when running a red light. You can argue about the severity of the situation, but you can’t easily id a cyclist to a number plate, so the police must catch the cyclist in the act of running the red. Nearly one thousand cyclists were were given penalty notices for running red lights in London from the beginning of the 2024 to April 24th. Any vehicle jumping a red light, that includes bicycles, get a 100 pound fine and 3 points, and first offenders could be sent to traffic school.

    @@marcothorsen950 I understand that, they are fairly narrow here too. For example I was driving back into town in a 100kph zone and had to slow to under 20 because there was a cyclist. There was enough room to go past but the law says 1.5m must be given (about 2/3rds of my lane). So had to wait till the oncoming traffic went passed before I could overtake. Ended up with 6 vehicles stuck behind me. Everyone was wondering why I was breaking and I was watching the mirror hoping cars & trucks don't slam into me.

    I'm looking forward to that being a KZread channel one day. How do you imagine it working? A chasing cyclist can't turn their blues-and-twos on and follow through the red light! I would be 110% behind the police running a channel like this one in which they chase down bad cyclists. It'd be a public relations nightmare for them if they cycled past motoring offences to catch naughty cyclists? I always thumbs up the police cyclist trap videos in which they spot offenders and another team stops them.

    It is worth pointing out that posted speed limits really do not apply to pedal cycles, that isn't cherry picking, the speed limit laws only apply to motor vehicles. Red lights of course do apply to cyclists, but as somebody who doesn't live in a city, though I am regularly travelling between several towns, I see far more car, van, and bus drivers running through red lights than I see cyclists doing the same. I also rarely see drivers actually come to a stop at stop junctions. I'd estimate a good 90% of drivers ignore stop signs. This "Whatabout-ism" is a fun game, isn't it?

    @@ytr8989 only EPAC cycles count as pedal cycles. Given that they have to stop providing electrical assistance if you are cycling in excess of 15.5mph, and only provide assistance if you are pedalling, and have a maximum power output of 250 Watt, there is little reason not to treat them as standard pedal cycles. Any electric bike that doesn't meet the EPAC specification is formally classed as a motorcycle or moped. Such bikes must be registered, taxed, insured, and are subject to all the same laws as any other motor vehicles, including speed limits. Unfortunately, some sellers of such bikes (much the same as some sellers of those damned electric scooters) do not tell buyers of their legal obligations. Leading to people not realising that they are not classed as pedal bicycles, and that no, dear little Johnny cannot ride his prized birthday present on the road.
