One concept is a two-stage model with the lead factory performing prototyping work and other factory or factories and dedicated to serial production of what the lead factory produces and dictates. The second concept is a more expanded theory. In the second, factories can fall into one of six categories - offshore factory, source factory, server factory, contributor factory, outpost factory, and lead factory. A lead factory has the ability and knowledge to innovate and create new processes, products, and technologies for a company.
