Fake or Real Gold & Silver Jewelry. The Magnet Test.

Remember, the Magnet Test does not tell you that something is Gold. It tells you what is not Gold. Turns out this Stamped 14K Bracelet did not pass the Acid Test and is fake Gold meant to scam and deceive.
1 simple and easy test to make sure you don't buy fake Gold or Silver Jewelry is to get a Magnet. If the Gold or Silver goes to your Magnet, then it is not real. Remember, there is no such thing as magnetic Gold or Silver. If your jewelry passes the Magnet test, then there is a chance you have gold and your next step is to go to a Jeweler and get an Acid test.

I tried the magnet test on a 18K necklace I bought online and the magnet clung to the spring clasp, so i thought perhaps the clasp might not be real but then I went to the jewellery shop and they confirmed it was gold 😂 so thanks for explaining that the magnet clings to the spring clasp due to the spring.

he's probably right for the most part. He forgets alloys. Why someone would want to mix gold with iron is stupid, but people probably do it. You can use a nonferrous magnet for that, it will tell you if there is any gold or silver.. They have either a repel or retract for that specific kind of magnet.

I agree. :-) but if a piece of jewelry goes to a magnet that someone has told you is gold or possibly silver, then they are generally wrong because gold or silver wouldn't go to a magnet. Except in the case of Rhodium plated silver. Also, using the magnet will save you from having to acid test everything.

There is no such thing as magnetic gold or silver, unless there is a plating or other alloys involved in the making of the item. Many jewelry pieces especially the silver ones, now have a plating over the silver to keep the shine, and over all appearance nicer for a longer period of time. Rhodium plating is often used, and while rhodium is not magnetic either, there is an alloy used to give the rhodium something to bond to which is magnetic. Anyone who uses acid testing knows you have to go beneath the plating to test and find silver to verify. Bottom line, yes a piece of jewelry stamped 925, or sterling can have a slight magnetic reaction. So the magnet is not a fail safe way to test. Acid testing is the most reliable test, for the consumer, but if you don't do any testing for yourself, try to buy from trustworthy people that will stand behind there claims.

Pure gold is not magnetic. That is, it doesn’t form a magnet on its own. If you put it in a magnetic field it will magnetize a tiny bit, but only so long as it’s in the field. and the direction of the magnetizaqtion makes it weakly repel the magnet. There are alloys of gold, for example gold with more than about 20% of the atoms replaced by iron, which do magnetize on their own, at least when they are very cold, much colder than room temperature.

My point is that if you are at a Flea market or a Estate or Yard Sale and someone hands you a nice , chunky stamped 14k gold necklace and you can't acid test it because the seller won't let you file deep into it, well the very least thing you would be able to do would to be put it next to a powerful magnet. Now if it goes to the magnet you would definitely know that it is certainly not all gold, whether plated or not, because there is no such thing as magnetic gold.

You do not immediately pay full gold or scrap price because if the item is magnetic, then you are most likely not getting actual gold or silver.

Unfortunately your " Goldsmith " skills did not help you understand the actual point of this video, which I even restated in my last response to you. Possibly because you are a " Goldsmith", you are overthinking it. Anyway, I will state it again. When you are in the field and a seller tells you that a piece of jewelry is gold and it may even possibly be marked as gold, you can simply take a magnet and hold it to the item. If the item goes to the magnet, it is not gold because there is no such thing as magnetic gold. Now if the item does not go to the magnet and you think it might be gold, you can do the acid test. Using a magnet initially saves time and the need to do the acid test and also, if you are not a " Goldsmith " it might save you some money from shady sellers who are trying to scam you.

This test can't really prove anything. Cause theres chains where it'll be gold plated but some other type of metal under the gold.

What I'm saying is that this test will absolutely and positively tell you if a chain that looks like solid gold is not solid gold if it sticks to a magnet, because there is no such thing as magnetic gold.

I have a 14 karat one and when I lay it flat like in the video, it does not budge at all. I tried it with a stainless steel necklace and it snaps on. However when I’m holding my 14k chain dangling it it is very weakly attracted to the magnet. Like pretty much unnoticeable so unless you really focus in. What does this mean?

@@2ndhanddaisy thanks for the quick response. I am currently trying it more and again it doesn’t budge at all laying flat, nor does it budget at all when I dangle it in the air. But when I fold the chain and rope it so that both ends are dangling that is when it gets very weakly attracted. I have to get it really close as well and it doesn’t stick for long maybe only a couple seconds then it repulses.

No gold jewelry is 100%. Its too soft, even bullion isn't. Its all mixed with other metals. We all know there's no such thing as white gold or other colors, gold is gold in color. If u want white, its gonna have a rhodium plating over. Rhodium is more expensive than gold, its in the platinum family. Yellow gold also has some sort of finish. A lot of times, especially with cheaper pieces, its layered thinly over bronze or copper. 10k has got least amount of gold content but the other metals make it more durable. Plus its cheaper. 24k has the most gold content but too soft to make jewelry unless its alloyed. My favorite would be 14k simply for the color&strength. I think gold over silver is a good choice, but I would never expect to buy fine jewelry on eBay. Other countries can sell without stamps, here in US,we have regulations on the metals that are sold,so we have to have any gold or silver properly stamped. The made in Italy,14k,18k,24k & 925(silver) are misused by these countries to scam ppl! Know ur precious metals, learn all u can on plating, gold filled, finishes, and the cost of them, that way you'll know. Because ur not gonna get a good quality, fine piece of jewelry for $1.99.
