I live near Philadelphia. We call a picture rail a picture rail. Chair rail is something different. Picture rail is about a foot down from the ceiling and pictures are hung from it. A chair rail sits about the height of a chair to keep chairs from scratching the walls.

I am loving the process and the progress on the fairytale cottage! I’m so glad you’re doing a nice crisp white bathroom. You might want to consider a green grout that will match the skirting board colors. To pronounce the white paint color name correctly, just think of the author W. Somerset, Maugham; remember that the G is silent.

Picture rail in America Chair rail is not the same. The purpose of a chair rail is to be on the level with the back of chairs. They protect the walls from being marred by chairs. Picture rails are obviously higher and are for hanging pictures without making nail holes in the wall.

I am from the South and most old homes have picture rails down from the ceiling or right under the ceiling. When homes had plaster walls, you would not want to hang a picture by hammering into your walls. Hanging from a picture rail offered a variety of picture placement. Very smart thing to do.

your designer is undoing everything I was taught - I mean everything lol! but I have never tried his way so can't wait to see what I make of it all! I was told keep dark rooms dark and bright rooms bright. Trying to brighten a dark room will just make it feel cold, but using warmer colours will make it feel cosy. Using whites does not make rooms bigger or warmer, but using greys with a yellow base will. Rooms will look bigger if the skirting board is just one shade below the wall colour whereas a contrast will shrink the room. I am really looking forward to seeing what the rooms look like with undercoat then that will give an idea if the room could look smaller/bigger/ warmer/cooler. Very interesting!

'Picture rails' in America we call 'picture rails' . My 1925 Craftsman style bungalow in Oakland, California where I lived by the Bay 37 years had 'picture rails'. I loved them for hanging pictures from (so that we didn't bess up the beautiful plaster walls), and other decorative pieces, even an ironing board behind a bedroom door. Very useful, 'picture rails'. I miss them.

You guys are so funny! I like the historical story about the chair, too! As for the cottage, love those greens! You're right, not on board for the dark floors... All dust & dirt will show. Maybe in the dining room, but, for me at least, wooden floors need to be natural looking. So, Just a thought on the slanted ceiling being the same color as the wall - as a tall person, this almost guarantees I'd hit my head! I need the reminder to duck! In the bathroom, what if you incorporate the grey tiles as accents, scattered within the white tiles, with no particular pattern? It'd break the monotony, while keeping the clean, fresh, look. This is a fun one! Now to go watch the swim. Brrrrr, from rainy SoCal!

Fun project! Loved seeing Nikki visit, her bathing in cold water is tempting to watch lol 🙊 I personally am a lover of green hues, but I feel your decorator is going a bit too modern with all white walls, green trim and woodwork and black glazed floors. Floors add alot of reflective light meaning the light bounces off them and the tone of color influences the shade of a room, especially a white room. If choosing these saturated greens I'd have gone for a warm laquer or better yet, oil on the wood to bring out a natural warm contrast to the cool coloscheme. Somethong more amber or honeyed would be beautiful against the green and not cast greyness to the walls. Personally I think the one thing BRITS are world famous for is their beautiful handprinted wallpapers, there's a veritable treasure trove of the most beautiful patterns made from finds in historic houses and all dated and available in so many colorways. I'd definately have gone for a small print wallpaper either in the upstairs rooms or downstairs as the effect in a smaller room can be so beautiful like a lovely giftbox and it's such a quintessential English cottage tradition. It is a bit more costly though, but it won't come off the walls if not heated, and the rooms are small so not very many rolls needed. In a room with lots of soft furnishings you can go with printed fabrics instead but smallish kitchen and dining rooms don't have alot of fabrics so it would add alot of charm and detail to look at. I'm not huge on art that's not really art, and I'm assuming that's not a splurge for a mainly rental space, and takes time to find, so that's what I'd have done instead. There are lovely small prints made for the Jane Austen Museum from fragments from her house, a classic small scale William Morris print like willows bough with some soft trailing movement, sooo many companies make patterns for this type of house that aren't busy or dominant. But I'd steer away from black floors, that's was a passing trend that only really worked for bright lofts without rugs that tend to look like islands on them. I'm certain it will be pretty any way you do it in the end though, and it will be fun to see you add the furnishings and personalize once the major reno is done! I'd add warm secondary colors somewhere on the spectrum of warm beige, honey, brandy, rusty orange or warmer pinks to achieve some coziness and pepp in the end. A tone that compliments the green. I'm curious to see what you do! An all white bathroom will be bright and very practical to clean which is important for rentals. A natural basket weave is a nice cottage touch for hampers and bins, gives some texture and doesn't collect dust. It's time you read something of William Somerset Maugham dear! 😉❤️ Is your bathing collab video posted yet?! I've got a horrible sinus thing so I'm so happy not to swim in icy waters right now but will definately hit the sauna and go for it once this is over! 🙌

Yes! I love these ideas! Except the rusty orange, which took me back to the 1970s...😂

We call them picture rails in Canada too but of course we have a British heritage. It's called that because pictures were often hung from the rails. Chair rails of course protect the walls (often plaster) from the backs of chairs put to rest against them or from the marks left by sideboards etc.

It means that here too - but it's also a very specific, historical term to do with male inheritance, as Luke explained. Read Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice to find out more about it! entail /ɪnˈteɪl/ verb 1. involve (something) as a necessary or inevitable part or consequence: "a situation which entails considerable risks" 2. limit the inheritance of (property) over a number of generations so that ownership remains within a particular family or group: "her father's estate was entailed on a cousin" noun 1. a limitation of the inheritance of property to certain heirs over a number of generations: "the damage being done in England by entails"
