I have looked at lots of knitting channels and nobody uses my own technique which is using long needles and tucking the recipient needle under my arm. I have found out this is an old established method using a shoulder holster to tuck the needle into, I could do with one. This method leaves my hands free to knit at speed instead of waggling the needles around. Also good for even Fair Isles type knitting. For large items, two sets of long double ended needles and elastic bands on the ends of the needles, only removing for the two points being worked. I press my little finger down to my palm, running the yarn underneath, giving me a controlled tension and even stitches.

This sounds a lot like using a knitting belt too, if I understand correctly!

Darn! I didn’t finish my previous comment. Well, what I intended to add was that getting used to all that black and white in a small chart was initially a visual challenge for me, but one that I was willing to adapt to because I love her designs. A third challenge has been that most of Marie’s Fair Isle designs are written for flat knitting. At first, I thought I’d never be able to conform to that, but a little practice has made it easier.

Why so many problems with black and white charts? You can enlarge them on a printer, download and enlarge them. I use a highlighter marker to go over the row I have just completed, then all I have to do is read the row above the marker. Problem solved. You can also isolate with a pen, the repeat units so all becomes far easier to read.

I wonder why so many repeats of the pattern are on the pattern sheet?

Did I understood you right. One knits according pattern chart as indicated. On the wrong side row 2 one knits as the knitting is in the row before the one, one is knitting. Row 3 is then according pattern?

This is why I’ve yet to finish a Marie Wallin garment. The charts are a nightmare to follow... and I knit a lot of Fair Isle.

@@macsmiffy2197 Are you saying this because you find the black-and-white symbols hard to follow? I get the feeling that designers affiliated with Rowan write their patterns this way, as opposed to designers who do their charts using colors. Another problem with Marie’s charts is, of course o, that they’re small.
