FAIR ISLE KNITTING: A Benjamin Burton Short Doc
This is a short documentary that covers a basic history of the Fair Isle, a remote isle in Northern Scotland with a population of around 50. It has a tiny population and always had, however, its had a massive impact globally within the knitting community. It is famous for its intricate patterns and amazing hand knit products.
This is the final product that I created for the College Colloquium Summer Research Grant from Willamette University. This was also my first opportunity attempting to create anything documentary style and I learned so much from it, looking back there are a million things that I would change but at the time it was created it was truly the best work that I could've created.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make this film possible it truly was the start to my film career!
Please check out and support Fair Isle knitters such as Mati Ventrillon at www.mativentrillon.co.uk/
Thank you to Willamette University for funding this project
David Altman for serving as an advisor for the project
SOVA for providing all music
Finally to my mom for supporting me in everything I've done

Lovely film... would’ve preferred without the music during the interviews as competing with the people speaking. Gorgeous filming. Thank you for sharing 🌿

I agree too - it’s a bit too loud during the bird interviews especially. But a better film than I could make!
So glad the wool needles hands podcast led me here, what a lovely piece of film

I love that you are a knitter...thank you for the visit to Fair Isle. Such lovely people.
Thanks Benjamin I loved your film because I love to knit and learning the history & background of different methods of knitting makes knitting mean so much more to me than just a hobby or craft. And yes, we all need to "Wise Up" Thanks
Beautiful film. Thanks for doing it and sharing I am an old granny knitter and found the background music and sounds made the interviews difficult to hear. Using subtitles was distracting because of so many wrong words. Fair Isle was always printed as feral. But lovely and informative film.
Hi from PDX. Was watching "the repair shop". They mentioned in a spinning wheel segment about fair Isle, that wheels parts would be made from wood washed up from the sea, since there's no trees there.
Superb video. Very professional and well done for making the journey there. I'm from the UK and very few of us even get to The Shetlands, let alone the Fair Isles 👏

Knitting simple pieces..it makes me appreciate the jumpers made here in Fair Isle..thanks for this one..a hard to get to place but worth it.. it seems..as they say civilised.. 🧶 .. ❤.. 🧶
This popped up in my knitting feed. Watched it and 100% enjoyed it. Keep up the good work....now I’m off to watch your other videos.
Loved this so much! As a knitter, I am always thankful to find true explorations of the art and process of knitting. Thank you for shining a light on such a beautiful knitting tradition.
Really great job. For reasons I don’t understand I recently became fascinated with Fair Isle. I was thrilled to find your piece. It was perfect. thank you.
Such a beautiful film. You are an amazing young man! I’ve been a knitter my entire life, fascinated with Fair Isle. I want to live there!! Keep up the great work and always follow your dreams 🧶

Thank you so much, your words mean so much to me ❤️ It would truly be a wonderful and unique place to live, you should do it!
I loved this. Thank you. Great job. I especially loved the woman whom the island adopted, and she adopted its ways
Go Bearcats! Willamette '09 alum!
I adore seeing men amongst the knitting community.
Had no problems with the sound. Thanks for this little masterpiece. And the clicking was amazing.
This is wonderful. I love fair isle knits. I can’t believe you actually went. So cool. I looked into how to get there at one point too but you did it. Really lovely video. Enjoyed it so much. Keep going!
What a lovely mini doku!!!! I will totally mention it on my fairly fresh knitting podcast! I`d love to see more of your knitting!
Dude I can't even begin to say how proud I am of you this is you added to your first semester and now you're producing it is the end of your last semester and it is unbelievably Dynamic active dude there's so many ways that I want to describe and analyze that but you did such a good job man your mother would be proud I am so proud of what you've done Beyond I don't know what else to say man I love you
Hopefully, you can adjust the background music level, this is a wonderful film. Thank you.
This is complicated knitting, I have yet to try it! It has been proven that knitting improves your brain...especially this kind. It is very mathematical.
Interesting vignette of Fair Isle - a place that has fascinated me and which I would love to visit. As that is unlikely thank you so much for this short doc. I did find some of the audio difficult to hear and while the music is atmospheric, overlaying it over speech was distracting. I so wanted to hear all that was being said. A lovely and much appreciated visit to Fair Isle.

@@thebenburton You did a stellar job for a first time project longer that was more involved than any previous endeavors. I am sure you are benefiting from this experience and are growing more adept at fashioning your vision for other projects. I did enjoy it as I was able to travel to Fair Isle without spending a penny or embarking on a series of plane trips! Thank you again.

Benjamin, one bearcat to another, brilliant film! I put it on to watch while knitting, but couldn't knit because it was too interesting. :) I hope all's well with you!

First off SCO BEARCATS!! Thanks so much, I'm glad that you liked it! I'm good and working on some new doc projects, hope you're doing good too!
I LOVE this video. It was so entertaining and instructive and introduced us to a part of the world few of us will ever see. As an avid knitter, a lover of Shetland wool and semi-skilled at Fair Isle knitting, I was enthralled throughout the entire video. My only comment would be to lower the volume of the music (or delete it entirely) during the interviews. It made it difficult to understand the heavy Scottish accents. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.
Thank you for this sweet tour of a place that I have on my list of destinations for my upcoming sabbatical! I so enjoyed meeting the people and seeing the place-so beautiful!
Just watching with closed captioning and found the auto translation of Fair Isle into feral knitting very amusing. From now on I'll be feral knitting! I didn't catch a mention of the actual island yet though and am quite a way in.
Wow! I am going to visit!!!❤❤❤
Beautiful! I love your film style. I love stranded knitting of all types.
Nice video, wished you show more fair isle knitting.
Thx for stopping it I loved the film I fair island knit
My grandmother was a Fair Isle knitter. Beautiful knitter. She also knitted lace and crochet as well. I knit too so did my mum. Maybe in our Scottish blood.
i've been to fair isle a few times, it's really worth a visit. and not at all so difficult to do as you might expect. if you're an artist, you might like to do a residency at fair isle studio.
I’m so glad this popped up in my feed! Thank you for sharing!
So inspirational!
I lived in Salem for several years, and wished I’d known that Willamette Uni’s cafeteria was open to the public then! Willamette Uni had been the site of the Nwrsa yearly conference, this Uni is an excellent site for any kind of conference! Ben you did an excellent job on your video! Ne last thing REAL MEN KNIT!

@@thebenburton what a nice surprise! Keep on knitting! When my dad was in med school, he had a college who had anxiety so bad he would pass out. Dad said he would walk into the Dr’s lounge and this guy would be in there knitting to relieve the stress. I have found that my BP goes down when I knit or spin! I’m one of those weirdos who spin wool also! I like to say that I spin my wheels and actually get somewhere!😜 What yarn shops are in Salem now?
Fantastic video, but I’m really struggling to understand the words especially with the music around the 10 minute mark. It would be better if the music was a bit quieter against the voices, or if there was subtitles :) but I am really loving this The jumpers are absolutely beautiful!
What a lovely film! Incredibly impressive for a student project. Great work!
Such a wonderful video. It reinforces the reasons the area is on my wish list is places to visit.

Love this!!

Hi Benjamin, I think your choice of music is perfect and adds a great deal to the story telling you do.
Fabulous. We need more of you

Thank you for sharing your trip and for making this lovely documentary :)
Why do people think that you need music in their videos. But, anyway, just keep watching.🤔
BRILLIANT - I really want a Fair Isle sweater that is knitted ON the island, but out of my price range I am sorry to say...

@@thebenburton I’m watching it again Muted and using Closed Captioning. I really loved everything else about your video.
The music completely drowned out the interviews
I loved the film as far as I watched, up to the sea bird part. To hear the people talking I had to have the sound up too loud and the music was physically making my ears hurt. I have moderate hearing loss, so it probably isn't the same for everyone.
It looks really interesting but it's hard to watch because the background music is too distracting, and as an EFL speaker I need more clarity to actually understand what the people are saying.
good apart from the cacophonic music spoiling the interviews
What’s the clicking sound in background ?
@cmaur811
3 жыл бұрын
I think its the knitting machines
The noise over interviews was distracting bordering on disrespectful. But otherwise it was a great piece of film.
Why the background sound?? Very disturbing, couldn´t watch it to the end. I would like to watch it again, when the back ground noice is gone.
Mistake to add the clicking and musical background. It really spoils it for me. Sorry. At least I can mute it and read the captions.
LOVED the film. Brilliant! But what in the hell is that beyond annoying clicking sound going on?
@miniaturehome

Needles clicking.
Lovely film, but terrible discordant noise around the 10 min mark. And the clacking noise throughout sounds like a pepper grinder.
That background music spoiled it for me as I couldn't hear some of what was being said. Otherwise, a nice vid.
Please, next time you make a video, could you make it without music to accompany the dialogue. It is very hard to hear what is being said....
lovely video but disappointed that you didn't show any actual knitting being done
I would have enjoyed this more if the layers of background noise wasn't there. Remember we haven't all got young ears like you and as I don't know who your target audience is, I suspect the majority of interested people are older knitters than you with declining hearing loss.

Disappointing that the sweaters are not knitted by hand ☹️
I was so interested to watch this but the added background noise & repetitive music was super annoying
I'd like to see the woman knitting.
Interesting, but couldn't finish watching it due to the annoying clicking in the background music
I am not a native speaker and the music over the interviews makes it nearly impossible for me to follow :-(
Terrible noise in background
