As a topper the thing i've observed between topper and average is that after college many of my average friends got a job and are working now but my parents are making me prepare for civil services ..............I think this can be the reason can be the reason as if you started working earlier you get promotions n grow in whichever field you're but as some toppers don't clear their whatever exam they're preparing for and thus get success late or never
