@@mykgyver65 My Mom had a couple of three-on-the-tree cars before her '64 Opel Kadett, then a Buick Special, a '73 Dodge Coronet, and she bought a used '70 Buick Estate Wagon factory 455-three-speed and I got the Coronet as a hand-me-down. My Dad got a '70 Opel Kadett when his Studebaker sedan bit the big one. I learned to drive on another three-on-the-tree overdrive Stude (started learning when I was preteen). I think it was 1984 before anyone in our family had an automatic, and I still haven't taken that plunge for myself. I had to order my most recent vehicle (four cylinder manual Frontier) from a dealer on eBay, about 1100 miles away.

I grew up with Mopars! My father worked at the Chrysler dealerships in Memphis, TN back in the 60s and 70s when 440s and Hemis were the norm. My mother had a 1964 Dodge station wagon with a 440 6-pack when I was a kid! When I was 16, I had a 1973 Cuda 340 that I put a bored and stroked 440 into. My father was scared of it, he said it was the fastest thing he had ever driven!

Wow a Newport with a stuck shift! We had a 1965 Newport sedan with the same motor and this car brought back so many memories. I never thought these units came with a stick shift. The original selling dealer Arnett is 30 miles from my house. It became Spitzer Motors then at that address. My folks and I bought many vehicles at this location of where Arnett was and became Spitzer. The dealership is no longer there. This video and the owner were awesome . Love the originality of this unit and the color too! I again enjoyed this video very much!!

A _manual_ transmission in a Chrysler? Believe it or not, some Chryslers did come with manual shift in the '60s; many of us wouldn't have thought that. But here it is! In 1963 (or was it '64?) _Motor Trend_ road-tested a Newport four-door sedan with a floor-mounted three-speed manual shift. That car was a stripped-down (for a Chrysler, anyway) model with no power options and little dog dish hubcaps. It must have been stripped down as one could get in a Chrysler Newport! And, like the B-52's said, it "was as big as a whale"! _(8/15/2022)_

Mom bought a three-on-the-tree '70 Buick Estate Wagon from her boss, otherwise loaded, but...Wish she'd kept that one. 375 horsepower, 510 pound-feet of torque out of a 455, maybe the mightiest wagon ever built. Traded it in on a new '83 V6 Regal that couldn't keep pace with my dad's Dodge Omni.

Hey the 3 speed stick was the standard transmission but most where sold with the Automatic. I have found out the standard shift cars were more common in the rural Midwest and near west. I never figured out if the country folks in the plains bought the stick shifts because they were cheaper or they got better fuel mileage. It may of been in the country we don't do stop and go driving so the automatic didn't improve your driving experience as much.

I believe Chrysler offered the three-speed as late as '71 in the Newport. You could get three-on-the-tree as late as '73 in B-body Buick, Olds, Pontiac, and Chevy. I saw a three-speed in a '72 Ford "Country Sedan", Mom had the three-speed in her second-hand Estate Wagon and I got her '73 Coronet stick as a hand-me-down, and I bought a stripper '68 Falcon as a hundred-dollar estate sale special. I believe you got a column shift stick as standard in the '80 Volare/Aspen twins....

Awesome Newport Love those mid 60s Mopar cruisers. My first car was a 64' Chrysler imperial with a 413ci wedge. So smooth but surprisingly peppy with 380HP coming out of that wedge. The ride was way better than anything I've been in since. today in most car's you feel every bump in the road, I think luxury is when you don't feel anything and just float down the road effortlessly.

Almost every make (and I did say _almost_) offered the three-on-the-tree in the most basic models in those days so they could advertise a lower base MSRP. In _Collectible Automobile_ magazine issue October 2021, page 13, there is a picture of a '66 Chevy Caprice interior featuring top-line trim with a column shift stick and extra points if you notice the overdrive handle where it would hit the driver's right knee.

There's an exhaust leak on the L side manifold, I could see it as well as hear it. An easy fix I'm sure will be corrected soon. And I'll bet Uncle Tony's Garage with his Mopar knowledge could iron out that little hesitation in the carb accelerator pump right away. And 3 pedals on a big bomb!!! And with the big torquey 383! They quit doing that a long time ago indeed. Even back then it was more common to have the base 6 cyl or a smaller V8 with the manual transmission on a car that was not trying to be sporty.

I tried fixing the exhaust leak when I first got it but the exhaust manifold on the left side is no longer flat where it bolts to the head. I'll find another manifold soon. They're plentiful. The carb needs an accelerator pump but they are scarcer than hen's teeth! I grew up working on these. I can take this car apart and put it back together easily. Modern day cars just aren't the same.

Great car with the 3 on the tree. So many cars had that as the standard transmission yet so rare to see today. I learned to drive with that 3 speed as well. I remember having my girlfriend shift the gear so I could keep my right arm around her while we drove!!! Thanks.

Thanks, Lou. And a thank you Mike and Robert. Mike, I'm sorry about your loss. Robert thank you for your military service. I enjoyed hearing about trade school and long-term friendship. What a nice and interesting car. A beautiful smooth design and I love the OEM wheel covers. I especially liked the factory sound of the 383 with 3-speed and I could get a good idea of a strong, smooth pull. That torque figure Mike stated is nice enhancement to this great car. I had no idea that by 1966 there were any Chryslers with manual transmissions. Even full-size Plymouth and Dodge with a manual seem to be rare too, other than the large muscle cars from Chrysler Corp. When I got my driver's license at sixteen years old, my dad had a used Ford that had been a special order for our state police. It was an Interceptor and ordered based on intercepting being its sole use. It was a 1965 Ford Custom, a full-size car with the most plain trim level offered. It came without power steering, without power brakes, and it had the solid lifter 390 with vacuum secondaries, and a three-speed column manual trans. That car held the road good and tracked down the road perfectly. Little me at 5'6" and 113 lbs., had a time with parking it. I was strong and turning the steering wheel when the car was stopped would lift me off of the seat. It's hard to work the pedals that way. Once I was driving around a sharp curve that had a bump in it, and I slide across the bench seat and slammed into the passenger side door! I recovered control without incident. A full-size car without P/S, P/B, and a manual is a handful. So Mike's Chrysler here is the way to go having P/S and P/B.

Well, when I bought it, it only had the power steering! It had factory manual drum brakes. When I was driving it home after buying it, I would hit the brakes and it would jump into the right lane! So I knew as soon as I got it home, it was time for the disc brake conversion. Now it stops very well!

After the 1979 gas crisis you could pick up cars like this for under $500 bucks. If you came around my neighborhood you would've thought all us kids were high rollers because of all the Newport's, 98 Regency's, but especially Cadillac's in the driveways. My buddy had a beautiful '66 Chrysler Newport HT that he wrapped around an oak tree near Garelick Farms, but lived to tell the tale

Hey, I had a ‘66 Newport convertible and drove it daily all through the 80’s and 90’s! Man I miss that car, I still dream I’m driving it sometimes. They made VERY few Newport convertibles in ‘66 so yours with the three on the tree must ultra super rare! Mine was pretty well loaded; it came with a Torque-Flight 727 auto trans, factory AC, power steering, power brakes (single well master cyl and drums all around), power windows (including the wing vent windows), power door locks, power antenna, power seats, power trunk release (vacuum operated) and cruise control with “pedal bump” speed minder feature. It also had the interior lighting package with lights all over the place when you opened the door, the clock, the rear speaker option between the back seat headrests with a fader control on the AM radio and I think it had cigarette lighters in the back door panel ash trays. I loved that front “dash tray” lol, we kept all kinda stuff in that compartment in between the two trays that we shouldn’t a had! Mine didn’t have those beautiful rims on it, mine had the standard Chrysler full wheel covers that kept slipping forward and bending the valve stem. Damn I miss that car!!

I drove a 3 speed manual '62 Valiant for almost 30 years. Wish I still had it. The only problem was I had to take out and have the Z-bar mechanical clutch control welded every 5 years or so. The last slant six in it was a 225, rather than a 170, ready for no lead gas, but I had to get the air cleaner assembly off a later Valiant to get the hood down properly. I also had to replace the steering column because I broke the gearshift tubes. It was off a '64. The only difference was the wiring, identical in every respect mechanically; even the correct color! I just created a patch cable with '62 on one end and '64 on the other.

Awesome 66 Newport...especially with the 3 on the tree and a 383. A very rare car indeed. Next year I'll have my 68 sport fury convertible at Carlisle with 383 HP 4-speed - 1/40 built. I'd love for you to check it out.

These Engel-designed Chryslers were just so beautiful--dashboard and interior included. Great days before the ugly fuselage bodies of '69 drove sales down yet again.

What a great car. I like the '65-'68 style...learned to drive in my mom's new 1968 Town and Country 9 passenger. The tank. BTW Chrysler did not offer a New Yorker convertible during those years...only the Newport and 300. I think 1961 was the last year you could get a New Yorker Convertible.

They only made 3085 of these Newport Convertibles in 1966 and I bet there were very few with the 3-on-the-tree! That's why I love this one - it's probably the only one in existence!

I had a 1966"300" hardtop in in the mid 90's that I drove daily. It had a beautiful interior, compared to my 1967 Galaxie 500 I had before or the 1966 Impala "SS" convertible that I had at the same time. I used to joke how many bodies I could fit in the trunk.

Hi Lou, this is a very rare car! I'm sure it cost Chrysler Corp. more money to make the stick shift standard, than had they just put automatics in all these big cars! It just meant they could charge an additional $200 or so for each car sold!

Beautiful Car , manual transmissions is my preference but a Hemi four speed would Ideal . I enjoy your collector car interviews but get anxious waiting to see what is under hood when we are under the trunk lid examining the owners manual and brochures. I know this is your trade mark repertoire and I am learning to adjust to the delay of the knowing what 's in the engine bay. For security reason I think you don't reveal the location of the drive around of such beautiful country sides. It is Intriguing ! Thanks for rides in cars that have a heritage ,beauty and comfort that instill joy traveling over the open road!
