    I caught my PB (13.1 lbs) in 49° water on Dec. 29th in Whiskey slough, flipping a large blk/blu jig, out of the moving current at the end of a deep tulley island. My second PB 12.65 lbs was caught in 50° water... also in Whiskey slough, pitching a large blk/blu jig on the edge of deeper water tulleys. Another option is to fish the warm water discharge at the PG&E power plant slough in Antioch... my PB there was 10.2 on a red craw rattletrap...

    damn, giants! I feel like flipping a big jig this time of year is like throwing a big swimbait on the lakes. may skunk may not but if you get bit this time of year it could be a trophy fish. appreciate the tips!

    It's reasonable to think that targeting abush points in delta tulleys would be a more focused presentation, since they're more confining than the expansive nature of lakes. These Delta lunkers typically dominate these current breaks as their natural habitat for foraging, regardless of season.. My 12.65 and 13.1 were caught within 50 feet of each other... one in early spring, the other early winter.@@GregBlanchardFishing

    Congrats on beating the January jinx. I always ran to dead-end sloughs (cleaner water) and slow-rolled a black/red spinnerbait right through the weeds and timber. Course, this was 30 years ago when we hewed our rods out of wood using crude stone tools. Things have probably changed.

  • @jacobsheldon2865
    @jacobsheldon28655 ай бұрын

    One tip that may help you catch fish on the delta in the winter.some friends of mine fish it. They swear in winter that a low, incoming tide with good current (present) and clean lively vegetation was crucial for having bait present and a good bite. Fishing lay downs, rocks etc. downsizing a jig to 3/8 oz, dead sticking it and moving very slowly, very lifelike. As you did in this video with a jerk bait, it also is deadly around wood! My personal preference when fishing CA in general, (usually Dixon lake way South of you in Escondido ) is to start in 10ft of water with a rattle trap, have a jerk bait as backup or possibly a bigger jerk bait that has some draw power and leaving it sit in that strike zone long as possible, moving deeper adjusting as needed. If all else fails, catch the ones cruising the bank looking for trout/panfish. Btw your tactic in this video seemed pretty good to make a bad day of fishing a good one! Happy fishing

    Great video, Greg! Looks like you've broken through your fear of Winter fishing the Delta! Though Largemouth Bass is the ultimate species to catch, I think it would be great to see you explore catching other species more, like Striped Bass, Catfish (Clear Lake episode), and Crappie. You can still use artificials to catch those species, if not using live or frozen bait. Also, it would be cool if you can do a Seasonal Series (i.e. how to catch bass during the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall).

    Greg, love your videos man. Tie yourself on a shadrap on 6-8 lb straight floro on spinning rod. One of the fish catchinest baits in those temp ranges. Light line allows for long casts and real slow retrieve. With all the rip rap there you might be pleasantly surprised bud. Laydowns are money too, just tickle the wood and make multiple casts. You can really finesse them thru wood without snaggin much other than lips. January might become one of your favorite months. Submerged weeds in 4-6 ft is another favorite place to tickle the shad rap thru. I like to crank it down slowly until contact with whatever you're fishing then stop and slowly sweep the bait with your rod, then real up slack as slowly sweep again. Lol. That's why I call it tickling. Hard to beat in probably the crawdad color on the delta. Same setup for jerkbait...nice and slow

    I noticed when you were fishing with the jerkbait at the beginning of the video, it was a little difficult to tell how fast exactly you were working that bait but there was a few clips where you definitely were going way too fast for a winter bite. I count to 10 or 15 seconds between snaps of my rod when working a jerkbait in the winter. The one fish that bit came while you were distracted looking at your graphs, letting it sit. Just something to consider.

    Hey Greg I’m looking to add some electronics onto my kayak, could you go more in depth on why you chose two helix 9’s and the benefits of the mega live 360? Was looking at many different electronics in the helix series from 7 and above

    mainly the mega 360. just remember its not live it just gives you a 360 image of whats around you and thats why i chose it. being able to pinpoint where a rock pile or the grass line is i felt suited my fishing style best and so far i've been more than happy with it. i've fished a few areas that i've had good success in the past and its amazing how much detail you can see with that 360

    What is that contraption in between your front seat into the back seat with the hitch receiver on it? Just curious if it’s something I could use. Always looking for better way to transport

    Just a thought. Do you keep a tide log? Be interested to see the tracking of the tides during your trips overthe months and years. Be a good reference for days with success and others that weren't as successful to look back on. That's how you can find patterns

    😂 not trying to teach you how to fish, but I noticed your cadence speeds up when you start catching fish and you start speeding up faster and faster and faster and faster. I believe that’s gonna not let you catch as much fish counting down on Your cadence will help you in the winter. Going faster and faster. As a bad habit you get from tournament fishing makes you feel like you’re catching more fish or your time is running out or you don’t have enough time to catch fish.
